SOUTH SHORE GROUP SITES Introduce
For local users planning a group camping trip and searching for "camping near me" in the Culver, Oregon area, SOUTH SHORE GROUP SITES, located on SW Haystack Reservoir Rd, Culver, OR 97734, offers a campground designed specifically to accommodate larger parties. This detailed introduction aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the campground, integrating publicly available information and firsthand accounts from fellow campers to help you determine if it's the ideal location for your group's next outdoor adventure.
SOUTH SHORE GROUP SITES is situated near Haystack Reservoir, a significant feature that attracts campers to the area. One positive review highlights the campsite's proximity to the water, mentioning a "nice a sandy not rocky" shoreline that is pleasant for walking. This suggests that under favorable conditions, access to the reservoir is a key amenity, potentially offering opportunities for swimming, wading, and other water-related activities directly from the campground.
As the name implies, SOUTH SHORE GROUP SITES specializes in accommodating larger groups of campers. One reviewer explicitly stated that "The campsite itself was nice, clean and very larger. Accommodated our group perfectly." This indicates that the individual campsites within the facility are spacious and well-suited for multiple tents and people, making it an excellent option for family reunions, gatherings of friends, or organized group outings seeking "camping near me" with ample space.
Based on the limited information available online, we can infer some likely services and features of SOUTH SHORE GROUP SITES, keeping in mind its focus on group camping:
- **Large Campsites:** The primary feature is the availability of oversized campsites capable of accommodating a significant number of campers and tents.
- **Proximity to Haystack Reservoir:** Direct or very close access to the reservoir is a key environmental factor, potentially offering waterfront camping experiences.
- **Sandy Shoreline (at least in some areas):** One review mentions a sandy area near the water, which could be a desirable feature for recreation and comfort.
- **Cleanliness of Campsites:** A positive review noted that the campsite was "nice, clean," suggesting that efforts are made to maintain the grounds.
However, it is crucial to consider a significant issue raised by another recent camper. This review highlighted a severe problem with the reservoir conditions, stating that it was "nearly drained and smelled like cow manure!" Furthermore, the water was described as "thick with slime and algae," rendering it unusable for recreational purposes. The reviewer noted that even their dogs would not go near the water, and the group had to drive to a different location ("cove palasades") to enjoy water activities. This feedback presents a serious concern for potential visitors hoping to utilize the reservoir during their camping trip.
For local users searching for "camping near me" and considering SOUTH SHORE GROUP SITES, it is imperative to take the following steps and considerations into account:
- **Inquire About Current Reservoir Conditions:** Contact the campground directly at (208) 270-0094 or +1 208-270-0094 to get the most up-to-date information on the water levels, water quality, and any advisories or restrictions related to Haystack Reservoir. The conditions appear to be variable and can significantly impact the camping experience.
- **Confirm Campsite Size and Capacity:** If you are planning a group trip, re-confirm the capacity of the group sites to ensure they will comfortably accommodate the size of your party and the number of tents or vehicles you plan to bring.
- **Ask About Specific Amenities:** Inquire about other amenities available at the group sites, such as picnic tables, fire rings, restroom facilities (e.g., vault toilets or flush toilets), and water sources (potable or non-potable). The reviews do not provide details on these aspects.
- **Clarify Campground Policies:** Understand the campground's rules and regulations regarding group size, noise levels, campfires, pet policies, and check-in/check-out procedures.
- **Consider Alternative Water Access:** Given the negative review about the reservoir conditions, have a backup plan for water-based activities. Research nearby lakes, rivers, or swimming areas that might be accessible if Haystack Reservoir is unsuitable. The reviewer mentioned driving to "cove palasades," which could be a potential alternative to explore.
When comparing "camping near me" options for group outings, SOUTH SHORE GROUP SITES offers the distinct advantage of large, accommodating campsites and, under favorable conditions, proximity to a sandy shoreline of Haystack Reservoir. The positive feedback regarding the campsite size and cleanliness is encouraging for those traveling with larger parties.
However, the strongly negative review concerning the reservoir's condition – including low water levels, unpleasant odor, and the presence of slime and algae – cannot be ignored. This issue significantly detracts from the appeal of a waterfront campsite and could severely impact the overall camping experience, especially if water-based activities were a primary reason for choosing this location.
Prospective campers should be aware that natural water bodies can be subject to fluctuations in water levels and water quality due to various environmental factors, including drought, agricultural runoff, and algae blooms. It is crucial to obtain current information directly from the campground management before making a booking, particularly if access to the reservoir is a high priority for your group.
In conclusion, SOUTH SHORE GROUP SITES offers the benefit of large, clean campsites ideal for group camping near Culver, Oregon. The potential for a pleasant waterfront experience with a sandy shoreline is also a positive aspect highlighted in one review. However, the serious concerns raised about the current condition of Haystack Reservoir – including low water levels and poor water quality – are critical considerations. Local users searching for "camping near me" for a group should contact the campground directly to ascertain the current status of the reservoir and ensure that the conditions will meet their expectations for their camping trip. Having a backup plan for water-related activities in the vicinity would also be a prudent approach.

Jun 12, 2024 · Rae Ann romkemaThe campsite itself was nice, clean and very larger. Accommodated our group perfectly. BUT... the reservoir was nearly drained and smelled like cow manure! The water was thick with slime and algae. We weren't able to access the water at all. Had to drive over to the cove palasades to play. Even the dogs wouldn't go near the water.
