Cyrus Horse Campground Introduce
For local users seeking "camping near me" in the Prineville, Oregon area, Cyrus Horse Campground, located in Prineville, OR 97754, offers a unique and potentially rewarding experience. This detailed introduction aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the campground, combining publicly available information with firsthand accounts from fellow campers to help you determine if it aligns with your preferences for an outdoor adventure.
Situated in the vicinity of Prineville, Cyrus Horse Campground appears to be nestled in a scenic region of Central Oregon. While the precise details of the immediate environment are not extensively documented, the customer reviews offer valuable insights. One camper described the area as "gorgeous" with "awesome" views of the surrounding landscape. The nighttime sky is also highlighted as a significant feature, with stars reported to be "so clear and close," suggesting a location with minimal light pollution, ideal for stargazing enthusiasts seeking "camping near me" with celestial views.
A notable feature of Cyrus Horse Campground is that it is reportedly "free." This can be a significant draw for budget-conscious campers who don't mind more primitive conditions. Free camping opportunities often come with fewer amenities compared to paid campgrounds, and this seems to be the case at Cyrus Horse Campground.
Based on the customer reviews, the services and features of Cyrus Horse Campground can be summarized as follows:
- **Free Camping:** This is a primary feature, making it an attractive option for those looking to minimize camping costs.
- **Scenic Views:** Campers have praised the beautiful surrounding scenery.
- **Stargazing:** The clear night skies offer excellent opportunities for stargazing.
- **Quiet and Private Atmosphere:** One reviewer described it as "quiet and private," suggesting a more secluded camping experience.
- **Social Interaction (Optional):** Despite the privacy, the campground is not so remote that interaction with neighbors is impossible if desired.
- **On-site Bathroom (Basic):** A "basic port-o-toilet" is available, indicating a rudimentary restroom facility.
- **No On-site Water:** A crucial point is the lack of available water at the campground. Campers are explicitly advised to "be sure to take lots of your own."
- **Horse Corrales:** The name "Cyrus Horse Campground" suggests facilities for those camping with horses, including corrales. One reviewer even mentioned saving a cow that had entered a corral.
It's important to note the limitations based on the reviews. While one reviewer gave the campground 5 stars overall, they had a negative experience with the adjacent mountain biking trail, citing the need for fat tires and, more importantly, a complete lack of signage, leading to navigation difficulties even with GPS and a trail map. This suggests that while the campground itself may be appealing, the mountain biking opportunities directly associated with it may not be well-developed or maintained.
The second reviewer's positive experience focused on the aesthetics, tranquility, and the benefit of free camping, while also highlighting the essential need to bring your own water and the presence of only a basic portable toilet. The mention of a partly unpaved access road ("half on dirt roads") is also a practical consideration for potential visitors regarding vehicle suitability.
For local users searching for "camping near me" and considering Cyrus Horse Campground, it is strongly recommended to take the following into account:
- **Water Self-Sufficiency:** Due to the lack of on-site water, you must bring an adequate supply for drinking, cooking, and hygiene.
- **Basic Sanitation:** Be prepared for a basic portable toilet as the only restroom facility.
- **Access Road Conditions:** Be aware that the campground may be partially accessed via dirt roads, which could impact vehicle suitability depending on weather conditions and your vehicle type.
- **Stargazing Potential:** If you are interested in observing the night sky, this campground appears to offer excellent conditions.
- **Quiet and Privacy:** If you value a more secluded and peaceful camping experience, this location seems to provide that.
- **Horseback Riding:** If you plan to camp with horses, the presence of corrales is a significant advantage. Inquire about any specific regulations or fees related to bringing horses.
- **Mountain Biking (Caution):** If mountain biking is a primary activity, be aware of the reported issues with the trail signage and the need for fat tires. Consider researching alternative trails in the Prineville area.
- **Free Camping:** Enjoy the benefit of a free camping experience, but be prepared for the trade-off of fewer amenities.
When comparing "camping near me" options, Cyrus Horse Campground stands out due to its free nature and the reported scenic beauty and stargazing opportunities. However, the lack of on-site water and the basic restroom facilities require campers to be well-prepared and self-sufficient. The issues with the mountain biking trail, while not directly related to the campground itself, are worth noting for those seeking recreational activities in the immediate vicinity.
The positive reviews emphasize the gorgeous views, quiet atmosphere, and the appeal of free camping. The negative feedback regarding the trail signage serves as a reminder to research specific activity opportunities beyond just the campground itself. The lack of water is a critical piece of information that cannot be overlooked when planning a trip to Cyrus Horse Campground.
In conclusion, Cyrus Horse Campground offers a unique "camping near me" experience for those who value scenic beauty, tranquility, and the opportunity for free camping. The exceptional stargazing potential is another significant draw. However, potential visitors must be fully aware of the limited amenities, particularly the absence of on-site water and the basic restroom facilities, and plan accordingly. If you are prepared for a more primitive and self-sufficient camping experience and are looking for a quiet and beautiful location near Prineville, Oregon, Cyrus Horse Campground may be an excellent choice. Be sure to bring plenty of water and consider the access road conditions when planning your trip.

Cyrus Horse Campground Reviews
The campground is awesome. 5 stars. However, this is a terrible mountain biking trail. Fat tires are needed which is fine but absolutely no signage to keep you on the trail. I had to constantly stop and refer between Google maps and the trail map. Luckily I had cell service. Even but doing that I couldn't find the trail. My ride was cut short by a few miles. Disappointing. One positive thing was I saved a cow. She had entered one of the corrales here and couldn't get out. Yay me!
Oct 29, 2020 · J. SchlotthauerIt was gorgeous out here. The views of the surrounding area were awesome, and at night the stars are so clear and close. It's quiet and privet, but not too remote that you can't have a conversation with neighbors if your chose. It's free as well, so if you dont mind a little out of the way (half on dirt roads) it's absolutely worth it.There is an on site bathroom with the basic port-o-toilet, but no water, so be sure to take lots of your own.
Aug 26, 2019 · KIt was a pretty area, but the drive to get there was so sketchy we did not make it to the actual campground. After driving a couple miles on gravel roads, the last mile and a half was off-road, a rocky/hilly dirt path tightly ensconced by trees. I've driven on dirt roads before in my front wheel drive SUV to get to trails, but this was sus and we ended up turning around for fear we wouldn't make it back out. I would not go here unless your car has four wheel drive and you're prepared to off road (or, I suppose, you want to backpack in the last mile and a half).
Apr 27, 2024 · Phoebe CelesteGreat, very remote. Cattle wandered in, but BLM shoed the out.
Sep 09, 2017 · Elizabeth KalmonGreat camp for those with horses and those without horses…dispersed camping nearby if you find it full…mostly empty but it can fill up with people and the horses they bring
