Skull Hollow Campground Introduce
For local users in the Terrebonne, Oregon area and those searching within the "camping near me" category for a well-situated and comfortable camping experience, Skull Hollow Campground, located on NF-1232, Sisters, OR 97759 (Note: This address seems to be a potential discrepancy with the Terrebonne address provided separately and should be clarified by users), offers a promising option. Based on recent reviews from fellow campers, this introduction will detail the environment, services, features, and important considerations for those planning a visit to Skull Hollow Campground.
The Scenic and Convenient Environment:
Skull Hollow Campground is praised for its convenient location, particularly its proximity to Prineville for accessing "cute food trucks and grocery shopping," making it easy for campers to resupply and enjoy local eateries. More notably, it is situated less than fifteen minutes away from the renowned Smith Rock State Park, a major draw for hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts. This prime location allows campers to easily explore the spectacular geological formations and recreational opportunities offered by Smith Rock while having a comfortable basecamp nearby.
The campground itself is described as a "great little campground" with "nice flat sites," which is a significant advantage for ensuring a comfortable and stable setup for tents and RVs. The presence of "solid picnic tables at each spot" adds to the convenience and usability of the campsites, providing a dedicated area for meals and other outdoor activities. While the reviews don't extensively detail the natural surroundings within the campground, the proximity to Smith Rock suggests a landscape characterized by arid high desert terrain with potential views of the iconic rock formations and the surrounding landscape.
One important environmental consideration highlighted by a reviewer with a large RV is the potential challenge of exiting the campground. A "pretty tight turn at the exit combined with a cattle guard and some large boundary boulders" posed a significant obstacle for a 45-foot fifth-wheel trailer. While the reviewer did manage to navigate the exit after multiple adjustments, this serves as a crucial warning for owners of very large RVs (likely over 40 feet). Campers with smaller rigs (40 feet or less, and especially 35 feet or less) are likely to find the access and egress more manageable.
Services and Well-Maintained Facilities:
Visitors have noted the well-maintained nature of Skull Hollow Campground. The "clean pit toilets" are specifically mentioned, indicating that while not flush toilets, the facilities are kept in good sanitary condition, which is essential for a comfortable camping experience. The presence of a camp host is not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, but the overall positive feedback regarding maintenance suggests that the campground is well-managed.
A significant service-related detail is the explicit mention of "No water!" This is a critical piece of information for potential campers, indicating that there are no water hookups at the individual sites or communal water spigots within the campground. Campers must come prepared with their own supply of water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. This lack of water is a key factor to consider when planning a trip to Skull Hollow Campground.
The availability of "Fire pits ... in every site" is another notable service, providing a designated and safe place for campfires (subject to local fire restrictions). The mention of "Double sites are a nice amenity" suggests that some campsites are larger and designed to accommodate multiple tents or larger groups, offering flexibility for different camping configurations.
Key Features and Highlights of Skull Hollow Campground:
Skull Hollow Campground offers several appealing features for local campers:
- Proximity to Smith Rock State Park: Its close location to this natural wonder provides easy access for hiking, climbing, and sightseeing.
- Level Campsites: Nice, flat sites ensure a comfortable and stable setup for tents and RVs.
- Clean Facilities: Well-maintained pit toilets contribute to a positive camping experience.
- Picnic Tables at Each Site: Solid picnic tables offer a convenient space for meals and activities.
- Fire Pits at Each Site: Designated fire pits allow for campfires (when permitted).
- Double Sites Available: Larger double sites can accommodate groups or those needing more space.
- Convenient Access to Prineville: Easy access to the town for grocery shopping and local food options.
- Generally Easy Access for Smaller RVs: Campers with RVs 40 feet or shorter should find the campground accessible.
Important Considerations for Big Rigs:
Owners of large RVs, particularly those 45 feet or longer, should be aware of the challenging exit due to a tight turn, cattle guard, and boundary boulders. While navigating this exit is possible with careful maneuvering, it may be difficult and time-consuming. Campers with RVs over 40 feet might want to consider alternative campgrounds with easier access.

Skull Hollow Campground Reviews
BIG RIGS BEWARE! This is a great little campground and was only 25% full when we stayed there for two nights in August 2024. Easy access to Prineville for some cute food trucks and grocery shopping. Nice level sites with solid picnic tables at each spot. Unfortunately it was a REAL challenge getting our 45-foot fifth-wheel trailer out of the campground due to a pretty tight turn at the exit combined with a cattle guard and some large boundary boulders. I think if you were 40-feet or smaller you'd be okay. Definitely 35-feet or less would be fine.PS - We did end up making it out after multiple adjustments - I'm not writing this still stuck in the campground! :-)
Aug 28, 2024 · Heather FoehNice flat sites. Clean pit toilets. No water! Nice views and less than fifteen minutes to Smith Rock State Park. Fire pits and picnic tables in every site. Double sites are a nice amenity. Would recommend and will stay here again.
Apr 12, 2024 · Robert QuinnThe campground was beautiful, the bathrooms were places so it’s an easy walk wherever you are in the campground. The camp host was very passive aggressive and irrational when we campedWe parked and set up and played a game of cards before we went and checked in and she was pissed! I get it I’m sure people always skip out on them but the way she talked to us was completely unnecessary. It’s 15.00 to camp and that’s a very cheap and reasonable price. The grass is very high near the picnic tables and with rattle snake warnings that was a tad concerning. Also the tall grass near a fire pit seemed like a bad idea. But the views are spectacular and the location to town is nice. All in all I’d come back but may want to avoid taking to long to check in as the lady seemed a bit stressed.
May 31, 2024 · cindy harrisonThis is a First come first serve pay by the day campground $10 a night. There is disbursed camping right across from the entrance to Skull Hollow Campground. YOU DO HAVE TO PAY TO STAY AT SKULL HOLLOW CAMPGROUND. There are bathrooms and dumpsters. There is also access to trailheads at this location. Fire wood is $6. And the Hosts are great. Pretty slow during the week, but Thursday- Sunday are very busy. Most people stay a night so get a camp spot early. Find your spot first then go get registered. Simple. Speed limit is 10 mph and the road is one way so be careful.
