Freighterview Campsite Introduce
For local residents in the Munising, Michigan area, and those searching within the "camping near me" category for a more remote and backcountry camping experience, Freighterview Campsite offers a unique option on Grand Island. Located near Munising, MI 49862, USA, this campsite is characterized by its proximity to scenic views at the northeast point of the island. However, based on customer reviews, it's essential for potential local users to be aware of the site's limitations and prepare accordingly for a more primitive camping experience.
The environment of Freighterview Campsite is described as "pretty overgrown," which suggests that the area might have dense vegetation around the campsite. While this could offer a sense of seclusion, it might also present challenges in terms of navigating the area or finding clear space. Despite not being particularly special in itself, the campsite's key environmental feature is its location close to the northeast point of Grand Island, which is noted for having "good views." This suggests that campers at Freighterview can easily access scenic overlooks of Lake Superior and the surrounding landscape. The presence of fallen trees, while providing a lot of firewood, also contributed to the overgrown nature of the campsite and made it "hard to find the latrine" for one reviewer.
In terms of services, Freighterview Campsite is a backcountry site with limited amenities. It does provide a bear box for secure food storage, which is crucial in areas with wildlife. A privy (outhouse) is also available, although one reviewer found it difficult to locate due to the overgrown surroundings. A significant limitation is the lack of a nearby water source at the campsite itself. The closest water is located a mile away at North Beach, emphasizing the need for campers to "stop and refill your water on the way by" and to carry an adequate supply to the campsite. The provision of a fire ring is mentioned as a positive feature, allowing for campfires, especially given the abundance of available firewood from fallen trees.
The features of Freighterview Campsite are somewhat limited. The tent pad is described as looking like it has "only enough space for one or two small tents," which is an important consideration for local users camping in larger groups. Hammock users should note that there is "only one good spot for a hammock at this site," and this spot is "kind of close to the fire pit," which might pose a concern for heat or smoke depending on wind direction. The abundance of firewood from fallen trees is a notable feature, although it contributes to the overgrown nature of the site. The proximity to the scenic northeast point is arguably the most significant feature, offering opportunities for breathtaking views and potential hiking in the surrounding area.
One reviewer gave the campsite a 3-star rating, summarizing the pros and cons. The pluses included the fire ring and the availability of a lot of firewood. The minuses were the very small campsite size and the difficulty in finding the latrine due to the overgrown vegetation. The reviewer concluded that "for the price not bad," suggesting that the cost might be relatively low, making it an acceptable option for budget-conscious local campers willing to tolerate the limitations.
Promotional information is not provided in the available reviews. As Freighterview Campsite is located on Grand Island, which is part of the Hiawatha National Forest, reservations and fee information are likely managed by the U.S. Forest Service through recreation.gov (often accessed via the phone number 877-444-6777). Local users interested in camping at Freighterview should check this website or contact the forest service directly for details on availability, pricing, permits, and any specific regulations for backcountry camping on Grand Island. Information regarding any seasonal closures or special advisories would also be available through these channels.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are experienced in backcountry camping and are seeking a site with access to scenic views, Freighterview Campsite offers a rustic option on Grand Island near Munising. However, potential visitors must be prepared for the overgrown environment, the small campsite size suitable for only one or two small tents, the single hammock spot near the fire pit, and the necessity of carrying water to the site from North Beach, which is a mile away. The presence of a bear box and a privy are essential amenities for a backcountry site. The abundance of firewood is a plus, but the difficulty in locating the latrine is a drawback. Overall, Freighterview Campsite appears to be best suited for hardy, self-sufficient local campers prioritizing access to the northeast point views and accepting of a more primitive and somewhat challenging camping experience.

The site itself wasn't really anything special, but it is close to the north east point which has good views. The site is pretty overgrown, but it does have a bearbox and a privy. May 29, 2022 · MattHad a lot of firewood which was a plus, but it was due to a lot of fallen trees over the campsite and it was hard to find the latrine and it is a very small campsite which were all minuses but for the price not bad at least there was a fire ring which was more than I expected to be honest another plus. 3 stars
