Devils Elbow Campground - U.S. Bureau of Land Management Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the vicinity of Helena, Montana, Devils Elbow Campground, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, offers a potentially appealing outdoor experience. Located at 5988 York Rd, Helena, MT 59602, USA, this campground provides a setting outside of the city while still maintaining reasonable proximity for accessing urban amenities if needed. Let's delve into what this campground offers based on recent customer feedback.
One of the standout features highlighted by a visitor is the campground's location. It's described as a "nice location outside of Helena," striking a balance between a natural retreat and convenient access to the city should campers require supplies or wish to explore Helena. This suggests a peaceful environment away from the immediate hustle and bustle, yet not so remote as to be inconvenient.
In terms of amenities, Devils Elbow Campground is noted to have "plenty of vault toilets," which is a practical and appreciated feature for a more rustic camping experience. However, it's important to note that the campground does not offer hookups for water, electricity, or sewer. One reviewer pointed out that, considering the lack of hookups, the price felt "a tad pricey" compared to other similar campgrounds they had visited. Despite this, they also mentioned that the camp was "clean and nicely maintained," indicating a level of care in the upkeep of the grounds.
A significant advantage mentioned by one camper is the opportunity to "reserve a campsite online and snag a river view spot!" This suggests that some campsites at Devils Elbow Campground boast scenic views of a river, which can greatly enhance the camping experience. For those who value waterfront access and picturesque scenery, securing such a spot could be well worth considering.
Another reviewer shared their experience of having a campsite "right on lake and beautiful," further emphasizing the scenic potential of the location. They also noted the presence of a walking path, which adds to the recreational opportunities available within or near the campground. These positive comments underscore the natural beauty and potential for outdoor activities at Devils Elbow Campground.
However, this same reviewer also pointed out a significant consideration for potential visitors: "Weekends are crazy." This suggests that the campground can become quite busy during peak times, which might impact the tranquility of the experience. Additionally, they mentioned that the boat ramp is located within the campground, which led to difficulties in maneuvering. This could be a concern for campers seeking a quiet, leisurely experience, particularly on weekends when boat traffic is likely higher.
Furthermore, this reviewer explicitly stated that there was "no water or dump station" available at the campground. This reinforces the earlier point about the lack of hookups and highlights the need for campers to come prepared with their own water supply and have a plan for waste disposal. Due to these limitations, the reviewer indicated they "probably would not stay again," suggesting that the lack of these amenities was a significant drawback for their needs.
Considering the platform category "camping near me," Devils Elbow Campground offers a location outside of Helena with potential for beautiful river or lakefront campsites. The presence of vault toilets is a basic amenity provided. However, it is crucial for local users to be aware that there are no hookups for water, electricity, or sewer, and no water or dump station on-site. The campground can get very busy on weekends, and the presence of a boat ramp within the campground might lead to congestion.
For those who prioritize scenic beauty and are self-sufficient in terms of water and waste management, and perhaps are visiting during the week to avoid weekend crowds, Devils Elbow Campground could be a worthwhile option. The ability to reserve a river or lake view spot online is a notable feature. However, those requiring hookups or preferring quieter environments, especially on weekends, might need to consider alternative campgrounds in the Helena area.

Devils Elbow Campground - U.S. Bureau of Land Management Reviews
This was a great campground! It's a nice location outside of Helena, but not too far away that you can run into town if you needed something. There are no hookups, so the price is a tad pricey compared to some others that I have stayed at with no hook ups, but the camp was clean and nicely maintained. There were plenty of vault toilets as well which was nice. I'd say it's worth the extra little fee to reserve a campsite online and snag a river view spot!
May 10, 2024 · Jessica ScanlanOur campsite was right on lake and beautiful. Walking path was a plus. Weekends are crazy. The boat ramp is in the campground and it's hard to maneuver around. There was no water or dump station. Probably would not stay again
Jun 30, 2024 · Donna CopeBeautiful views, water, restrooms, space, what more could you really ask for. I had a little birthday gathering here, and it was a great time. It was very quiet, and the views were breathtaking. I would highly recommend booking a spot here some time and seeing it for yourself.
May 10, 2024 · Kyle FitzgeraldMe and my husband had a great time camping out. We've never been to devil's elbow before our first time. The host was very wonderful. I would recommend if you are going there with just couple like Vibess go on the weekdays. Because it really does get filled up with family and friends on the weekends.
Jun 09, 2023 · lakeisha nealVery peaceful campground. $15 a night. Loop C closed. Loop A only reservations. B and D first come first serve. Very quiet. All spots are big enough for the longest RV. There are also tent camping spots. About 4 or 5 of them overlooking the great MO. There are volt toilets. Probably the cleanest volts I've ever seen or smell. I didn't meet the host but we waved and from his energy, they seemed like very nice people. Currently no fires allowed. Every spot has picnic tables. No showers and pets allowed.
