Chinaman Cove Campground Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts in the Helena, Montana area seeking "camping near me," Chinaman Cove Campground, located in Helena, MT 59602, USA, offers a unique waterfront camping experience. Based on recent visitor feedback, this campground is particularly appealing for its proximity to the water, dog-friendly policy, and the opportunity for exploration along the shoreline. However, it's important to note the absence of electrical hookups and the presence of vault toilets, which may influence your camping preparations.
The environment of Chinaman Cove Campground is a significant draw for many visitors. Its location provides "a very short walk" to the water from most campsites, making it ideal for those who enjoy being close to the shoreline. One of the highlights mentioned by a camper is the ability to walk along the water line past the day-use area, which offers "lots more room to explore." This area features natural formations such as "little caves" and "stacks of rocks," as well as unpopulated stretches of water perfect for activities like skipping rocks. This suggests a diverse and engaging natural environment that encourages exploration and interaction with the waterfront.
A notable feature of Chinaman Cove Campground is its dog-friendly policy. According to one reviewer, "The whole campground is dog friendly - including the water." This is a significant advantage for campers who enjoy bringing their canine companions along on their outdoor adventures. The ability for dogs to enjoy the water alongside their owners adds to the appeal of this location for pet owners.
In terms of amenities, Chinaman Cove Campground offers some basic necessities while lacking others. It is equipped with a "fresh water pump" for drinking water and "vault toilets." However, it's crucial to note that there are "no electrical hookups" for campers and "no water hookups for campers" at the individual sites. This absence of electrical hookups means that campers relying on electricity will likely hear generators running, as mentioned in one of the reviews. Therefore, if you require electrical power for your camping setup, you will need to come prepared with a generator and be mindful of the potential noise impact on your fellow campers.
While the camper sites are described as being "a bit close together," they reportedly still offer "plenty of room for a camper, canopy, and multiple cars." This suggests that while you might not have extensive space between sites, the individual sites themselves are reasonably sized to accommodate typical camping setups. The proximity of sites might be a consideration for those seeking maximum privacy, but the ample space within each site is a positive aspect.
One reviewer specifically mentioned "Spot 36" as being "big." However, they also noted that it experiences "high traffic to the vault restroom," the fire pit is "a bit far from camper parking," and there is "minimal shade." Despite these drawbacks, the reviewer highlighted a significant benefit of this particular spot: "No Mosquitoes!!" This suggests that mosquito levels might vary throughout the campground, and Spot 36 could be a desirable option during times when mosquitoes are prevalent.
Chinaman Cove Campground is favorably compared to another nearby campground, Hellgate, with one reviewer stating, "I preferred this campground over Hellgate down the road because they're are actually trees!" This indicates that the presence of trees is a significant environmental advantage for Chinaman Cove, likely providing shade and a more natural camping ambiance compared to potentially more open or less vegetated areas at Hellgate Campground.
In summary, Chinaman Cove Campground offers a unique set of features and considerations for those seeking "camping near me" near Helena, Montana:
- Pros:
- Easy and close access to the water for most campsites.
- Excellent opportunities for exploring the shoreline, including caves and rock formations.

There is no specific promotional information available in the provided reviews. However, the recurring themes of easy water access, a dog-friendly environment, and a more natural setting with trees make Chinaman Cove Campground an appealing option for local campers who prioritize these aspects. If you are comfortable with no electrical or water hookups and potential generator noise, and you value waterfront access and a dog-friendly atmosphere, Chinaman Cove Campground could be an excellent choice for your next camping trip near Helena, Montana. Be sure to consider the proximity of campsites and the potential for varying conditions (like mosquito levels and shade) at different spots when selecting your site.

Jul 17, 2023 · Cody AndersonCampsites are nice! Southwestern type feel. We have a 24ft camper, and barely fit. So big campers this may not be the place for you! Plenty of vault restrooms for folks with tents.
Sep 06, 2020 · Matt McConaugheyVery nice if you can get site 28,one of the few good sites with a lot of room and shade. 25 would be my second choice. Most of the others are small and sunny. No electricity. Nice pit toilets.
