Dwight's Point Watercraft Campsite Introduce
For local users in the Superior, Wisconsin area searching for "camping near me" and seeking a unique and somewhat remote outdoor experience, Dwight's Point Watercraft Campsite, located in Superior, WI 54880, USA, offers a primitive camping opportunity within the Superior Municipal Forest. This campsite distinguishes itself through its accessibility by both land and water, providing a serene escape for those willing to undertake a short hike or arrive by boat. It's important to note that this is a single, primitive campsite available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The environment surrounding Dwight's Point Watercraft Campsite is characterized by its natural beauty and waterfront location. Situated on Dwight's Point, the campsite offers access to a beach and is surrounded by plenty of trees, making it ideal for setting up hammocks and enjoying the shade. One of the notable features of the location is the "nice view of the Bong bridge and part of Duluth," suggesting a scenic vista that combines natural and man-made elements. The overall atmosphere is described as "very serene," promising a peaceful retreat away from more developed campgrounds.
Access to Dwight's Point Watercraft Campsite is part of its unique appeal and requires some effort depending on the season and mode of travel. During the summer months, the campsite can be reached either by boat or by hiking. The hike is approximately 2 to 3 miles, with the option of a "scenic way" or a "straight and boring way," allowing visitors to choose their preferred route and exertion level. There is also mention of a "Summer Use Trail," which hikers are technically supposed to use, and a potentially shorter but swampy route accessible from parking at point "W" when Billings Drive is open.
Winter access to the campsite transforms the journey into a different kind of adventure. It becomes accessible by snowmobiling across the bay or via a 2.6-mile cross-country ski from the Superior Disc Golf Course parking lot (formerly known as the archery range parking lot). The most direct ski route is detailed using map coordinates (X to W to GG to FF to EE to HH), providing clear directions for winter enthusiasts. This multi-modal accessibility throughout the year makes Dwight's Point Watercraft Campsite a distinctive option for those seeking "camping near me" with an adventurous spirit.
As a primitive campsite within the Superior Municipal Forest, the services and features are intentionally basic, focusing on essential needs while preserving the natural environment. The campsite is equipped with a latrine for sanitation, four tent pads to provide designated and hopefully level areas for pitching tents, and a fire ring for campfires (subject to local regulations and fire risk). Additionally, the presence of a beach offers direct access to the water for potential swimming, fishing, or simply enjoying the lakeside. The abundance of trees not only provides shade but also opportunities for hanging hammocks, enhancing relaxation.
Further details on the campsite's amenities include benches, chairs, and tables, offering some comfort and convenience in the otherwise primitive setting. The beach access is reiterated as a key feature, and a clothesline is provided for drying clothes or gear. The unenclosed out-house (latrine) is located about 50 yards south of the campsite on the east side of the trail, offering a degree of privacy while maintaining the primitive nature of the facilities.
Given its primitive nature and location within a municipal forest, it is crucial for visitors to be self-sufficient and adhere to Leave No Trace principles. As one reviewer aptly advises, "be respectful of the property/amenities and be sure to pack out what you pack in!" This ethos is essential for maintaining the pristine condition of the campsite and the surrounding natural area for future visitors. There is no mention of on-site staff or formal check-in procedures, reinforcing the first-come, first-served nature of this single campsite.
Due to its primitive nature and the lack of traditional campground infrastructure, promotional information in the conventional sense is unlikely to be available. There are no mentions of fees, reservations (beyond the first-come, first-served basis), or special offers in the provided reviews. Local users interested in utilizing Dwight's Point Watercraft Campsite should likely consult the Superior Municipal Forest's regulations or contact the relevant local authority for any specific rules, guidelines, or permits that may be required for primitive camping within the forest. Information regarding fire safety, waste disposal, and responsible use of the natural resources would also be essential.
In summary, Dwight's Point Watercraft Campsite offers a unique and adventurous "camping near me" option for local users in the Superior, WI area. Its accessibility by land (hiking) and water (boat) in the summer, and by snowmobile or cross-country ski in the winter, makes it a year-round destination for those seeking a more secluded and active camping experience. The primitive amenities, including a latrine, tent pads, a fire ring, and beach access, cater to those comfortable with a more self-sufficient style of camping. The scenic views of the Bong bridge and part of Duluth add to the appeal of this serene location within the Superior Municipal Forest. Local users should be prepared for a 2-3 mile hike or arrival by boat in the summer and a longer ski or snowmobile ride in the winter. Respect for the environment and adherence to Leave No Trace principles are paramount for all visitors to ensure the continued enjoyment of this unique campsite.

You can get to it from land or water. It is about a 2 or 3 mile hike depending on if you go the scenic way or straight and boring way. The site itself has a latrine, 4 tent pads, a fire ring, a beach and plenty of trees to use for hammocks. Nice view of the Bong bridge and part of Duluth.
