East Sullivan Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in a beautiful lakeside setting near Metaline Falls, Washington? East Sullivan Campground, located in Metaline Falls, WA 99153, offers a camping experience with a focus on its natural surroundings and family-friendly atmosphere. For local users seeking a place to camp with lake access and a welcoming environment, East Sullivan Campground presents itself as a popular choice. Based on recent customer reviews, let's explore what this campground has to offer, keeping in mind both its positives and areas for potential improvement.
Environment: Beautiful Lakeside Area with a Nearby Airport
East Sullivan Campground is situated in a very beautiful area, providing a scenic backdrop for camping. A significant feature is its access to a lake with a "perfect" swimming area, making it particularly appealing for families and those who enjoy water activities. The lake, being relatively small, tends to warm up during the summer months, which enhances the swimming experience. The campsites, while numerous, are reported to not feel overly close together, allowing for a sense of personal space.
A unique environmental aspect of East Sullivan Campground is its proximity to a free state airport. While this can be interesting for aviation enthusiasts, it also means that campers may experience noise from aircraft taking off and landing. According to one reviewer, these instances can be loud, although they are not constant. For those who enjoy watching aircraft, the campground offers a cool grass strip with aircraft campsites, potentially providing a novel camping experience.
Despite the presence of the airport, the overall atmosphere of the campground is described as not being loud in general, apart from the occasional aircraft noise. However, it's also noted that this is not a small, quiet campground, as it tends to attract lots of families, contributing to a more lively atmosphere during the day.
Services and Amenities: Nice Camp Hosts and Some Facility Concerns
The campground is praised for having "nice camp hosts," which often contributes positively to the overall camping experience through helpfulness and site management. The campground is also described as "clean," which is an important aspect for visitor comfort.
However, one significant concern raised by a reviewer pertains to the vault toilets. It was reported that they were in "desperate need of being pumped/emptied," and the stench from them could become overwhelming, especially when the sun hit the building. This suggests that the maintenance of these facilities might be an area needing attention.
While the reviews mention a swimming area, they do not provide details about other potential amenities such as water hookups, electrical connections, or specific recreational facilities beyond the lake access. The focus of the feedback is primarily on the environment, the social atmosphere, and the condition of the vault toilets.
Features: Swimming, Family-Friendly Atmosphere, and Aircraft Viewing
One of the key features of East Sullivan Campground is its perfect swimming area in the lake, making it ideal for families looking to enjoy the water. The campground's popularity with families contributes to a lively and social atmosphere, which can be a positive for those traveling with children or who enjoy a more communal camping experience.
The proximity to the free state airport is a unique feature that can be appealing to aircraft enthusiasts, offering the opportunity to see planes coming and going, and even the option of aircraft campsites. For others, this might be a source of occasional noise, so it's a factor to consider based on personal preferences.
The campground's popularity, particularly around holidays like the 4th of July, is evident from the recommendation to "book early" as it tends to fill up. This suggests that it is a sought-after camping destination in the area.
Potential Drawbacks: Vault Toilet Condition and Aircraft Noise
The primary drawbacks mentioned in the reviews are the condition of the vault toilets and the noise from the nearby airport. The overwhelming stench from the toilets under certain conditions is a significant concern that could detract from the overall experience. The noise from landing and taking off aircraft, while not constant, can be loud and might not be ideal for those seeking a completely quiet natural retreat.
It's important for potential visitors to weigh these factors against the positives of the beautiful area, the swimming lake, and the family-friendly environment.

East Sullivan Campground Reviews
Great campground, nice camp hosts, but the vault toilets were in desperate need of being pumped/emptied. The stench from them was overwhelming when the sun hit the building just right.
Feb 09, 2025 · Tricia MadisonWe went camping here the first time in 2023. Very beautiful area. Clean nice campground. Do not come here if you are looking for a small, quiet campground. It is not loud but lots of families. Even though there are lots of sites, they don't see crazy close, and people are nice and quiet after hours. The swimming area is perfect, and the lake is small so it gets warmer in the summer. There is a free state airport next to the camp ground. You do get some aircraft coming and going, and it's loud when they land/takeoff, but it doesn't last all the time. If you like aircraft, it's a cool grass strip with aircraft campsites. We will be going back every 4th. It does fill up so book early.
May 02, 2024 · Bradley MooreSerene setting with mature forest. Plenty of room between sites and several vault toilets. If you love camping in the forest along a lake and don't need paved sites to feel comfortable this is a great place to get away from it all.
May 31, 2020 · donna molvikPublic beach is very crowded, on hot days. The ranger station is permanently closed, generators run all day and night. The fishing on the lake is marginal at its very best and the boat launch is 4x4 only. Not worth the drive. One day last weekend we had close to 100 kayakers come by us. There are much better spots out there.
Jul 11, 2023 · Zachary HedquistLove this place! Unfortunately this year (2019) water level is exceptionally low, but still a beautiful place.
