Big Meadow Lake Campground

Ione, WA 99139, USA

4.0
Editing 2021 to add: I've now visited multiple times in every season and this place never gets old. If you visit in the summer make sure you're prepared for the mosquitos; fall is my preferred time to visit. The campground is also accessible in the winter!Hiking, birdwatching, canoeing, fishing, camping...very peaceful! I don't recommend swimming though, as there are leeches in the lake. Nice free campsites with picnic tables and fire rings. Outhouses available but no running water or trash service, so BYOB and pack everything out There's a short walk to a lookout tower that's really nice in the evening. There is also a really cool primitive cabin accessible by road or a short hike if you want to camp there as well. - Martha Hokenson

Their updated 2021 comment emphasizes that "this place never gets old," a testament to its consistent beauty and the variety of experiences it offers. They do provide a crucial tip for summer visitors, advising preparedness for mosquitoes, suggesting that insect repellent is a necessity during the warmer months. The reviewer's preference for fall visits indicates that this season might offer a particularly pleasant experience, possibly with fewer insects and beautiful autumnal scenery. Notably, the campground is also "accessible in the winter," opening up opportunities for winter camping enthusiasts to enjoy the quieter, snow-covered landscape.

Another camper enthusiastically detailed the array of activities available at Big Meadow Lake Campground, including "hiking, birdwatching, canoeing, fishing, camping...very peaceful!" This list underscores the diverse opportunities for recreation and relaxation that the campground provides. The emphasis on the peaceful atmosphere suggests a tranquil escape from the stresses of daily life, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in nature. However, this reviewer offers an important caution regarding swimming, advising against it due to the presence of leeches in the lake. This is critical information for potential visitors who may have been hoping to swim.

The availability of "nice free campsites with picnic tables and fire rings" is a significant advantage, making Big Meadow Lake Campground an affordable option for those seeking "camping near me." The inclusion of picnic tables and fire rings at each campsite enhances the camping experience, providing dedicated spaces for dining and enjoying campfires (subject to any local fire regulations). The reviewer also mentions the presence of "outhouses," which are basic non-flush toilet facilities commonly found in more rustic campgrounds. It is important to note that there is "no running water or trash service," so visitors must be self-sufficient, adhering to the principle of "BYOB and pack everything out." This reinforces the need for campers to bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, and to take all their trash with them upon departure to help maintain the cleanliness and natural beauty of the area.

Adding to the unique appeal of Big Meadow Lake Campground is "a short walk to a lookout tower that's really nice in the evening."
