Elroy Walk-In Campground (Elroy-Sparta State Trail) Introduce
For local adventurers searching for "camping near me" that offers a unique blend of accessibility to recreational trails and a more secluded camping experience, the Elroy Walk-In Campground, located directly on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail in Elroy, Wisconsin, presents an excellent choice. This campground caters particularly to those looking to explore the renowned bike trail while enjoying a comfortable and relatively quiet overnight stay. Situated in a convenient location within Elroy, WI 53929, USA, and reachable by phone at (888) 947-2757 or mobile at +1 888-947-2757, this campground offers a distinctive camping experience for individuals, families, and groups.
The environment of Elroy Walk-In Campground is described as "beautiful little campground" with "cozy campsites accessible by grassy trails." This suggests a more intimate and natural setting compared to larger, more open campgrounds. The grassy trails leading to the campsites contribute to a pleasant and walkable environment. However, it's important to note, as highlighted by a visitor, that the "walk in includes a steep uphill climb for ~.1/.2 miles." This aspect adds to the secluded feel but also requires consideration for accessibility, especially when transporting gear. Potential campers should be prepared for this short but potentially challenging walk to their site, and as suggested by a reviewer, a pull-cart or wheeled cooler could be very beneficial.
In terms of services and amenities, Elroy Walk-In Campground offers a notable balance of rustic charm and essential conveniences. Reviews indicate that the campground is "very clean, including the bathroom/ shower building." This is a significant plus for campers who appreciate well-maintained facilities. The bathroom/shower building, while described as having toilets that "don't flush well," is still considered "waaay better than a port-a-potty," suggesting a more permanent and comfortable option. A key feature of the campsites themselves is the availability of "electric, running water and a fire pit." These amenities provide a level of comfort that enhances the camping experience, allowing for basic power needs, access to water at the site, and the enjoyment of campfires. Additionally, "rustic bathrooms" are available, equipped with hand sanitizer at the door, indicating a basic but thoughtful provision for hygiene. Hand-pumped water is also available, although one review notes that it "might take some time/effort to get it running clear," so patience might be needed when accessing this water source.
The features of Elroy Walk-In Campground are particularly appealing to those interested in the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Its direct access to the trail makes it an ideal basecamp for cyclists looking to explore the scenic route. The "cozy campsites" and the general atmosphere suggest a quieter environment, which is often preferred by those seeking a respite from the noise and bustle of everyday life. One reviewer specifically mentioned that "if you’re looking for a cozy site with not a lot of frills/RV noise, I think it’s worth a visit." This highlights the campground's appeal to those who prefer a more traditional tent camping experience without the prevalence of large recreational vehicles. While one review mentions "sporadic traffic noise can be heard from campsites," the overall impression is that the campground offers a peaceful retreat.
For local users searching within the "camping near me" category, Elroy Walk-In Campground offers several compelling reasons to choose it for their next camping trip. Its location directly on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail is a major draw for cyclists and hikers in the region. The availability of electric and water hookups at the campsites provides a level of convenience not always found in more rustic walk-in campgrounds. The cleanliness of the facilities, including the bathroom/shower building, adds to the overall positive experience. The "cozy" and "beautiful little campground" atmosphere suggests a welcoming and enjoyable environment for individuals, families, and small groups.
In terms of promotional information, Elroy Walk-In Campground could emphasize its unique location as a trailside camping destination. Highlighting the convenience for cyclists exploring the Elroy-Sparta State Trail would attract a specific segment of the local outdoor community. The availability of electric and water at walk-in sites is a significant advantage that should be promoted. The positive feedback regarding the cleanliness of the facilities and the overall cozy atmosphere can also be used to attract potential campers. To further enhance its appeal, the campground could provide more detailed information about the trail access, nearby attractions in Elroy, and perhaps offer packages or discounts for groups or multi-night stays. Emphasizing the quieter, non-RV-centric environment could also attract campers seeking a more traditional and peaceful experience.
Considering the slight inconvenience of the uphill walk to the campsites, the campground could provide clear information about this on their website or during booking, perhaps even suggesting the use of wheeled carts for gear. This transparency would help campers prepare adequately. The mention of hand-pumped water potentially taking time to run clear could also be communicated to set expectations. Despite these minor considerations, the positive reviews and the unique combination of trail access and amenities make Elroy Walk-In Campground a noteworthy option for local users seeking "camping near me" along the Elroy-Sparta State Trail.
In conclusion, Elroy Walk-In Campground offers a charming and convenient camping experience for local users, particularly those interested in the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Its cozy, walk-in campsites with electric, water, and fire pits, combined with clean facilities, provide a comfortable stay. While the short uphill walk to the sites and the rustic nature of some amenities are factors to consider, the overall positive reviews and the unique trailside location make it a worthwhile destination for a memorable camping getaway in Wisconsin.

Elroy Walk-In Campground (Elroy-Sparta State Trail) Reviews
We stayed as a Boy scout troop to bike on the Elroy-Sparta trail. The entire campground was very clean, including the bathroom/ shower building. The toilets don't flush well but waaay better than a port-a-potty! The campsites have electric, running water and a fire pit available. Definitely would stay again
Oct 08, 2024 · Jeanet LopezBeautiful little campground. Cozy campsites accessible by grassy trails.Rustic bathrooms available with hand sanitizer at the door. Hand-pumped water available, but might take some time/effort to get it running clear. Sporadic traffic noise can be heard from campsites. The walk in includes a steep uphill climb for ~.1/.2 miles. I enjoyed that aspect, but it’s not the most accessible - something to consider when booking. A pull-cart and/or a cooler with wheels will certainly be appreciated. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re looking for a cozy site with not a lot of frills/RV noise, I think it’s worth a visit. I’ll be back.
May 28, 2024 · Ryan MillerI'm glad this campsite exists, but on June 5, 2024, it was useless to me. As a base camp to begin the E-S trail by bike, it seemed ideal: a place to camp overnight at Elroy and to leave my car. In reality, the access culvert from the trail was flooded with a foot of water, making a bicycle approach impossible. The gate and lack of opening from the road would necessitate unloading a touring bike to throw everything over the gate and reload after climbing over. When I trudged up the long and steep road to the campsites, they were overgrown with foot-tall grass. Not a welcoming sight in tick-heavy deer country. I was forced to bail out and was happy to find a camping area in the Elroy community park that included a shower and a place to leave the car. Those can be reserved at Elroy Commons. I asked for and received a partial refund from the DNR for their site. The walk-in sites could be greatly improved by draining the trail access culvert, putting a bike notch in the road gate, and mowing or replacing the tall grass with wood chips. A push cart to schlep gear and firewood up the steep hill would be a godsend. This is not too much to expect for a $37 campsite.
Jun 08, 2024 · Lawrence PfafflinWhen they say “walk-in” campground, they mean “park across the street then walk uphill for 0.2 miles to the site you booked”! It’s in the name but it surprised my buddy and I. Why didn’t the DNR just finish building a complete campground? Whatever. It’s a fine place to camp otherwise. There weren’t many bugs when we were there, a nice family down the road sells bundles of firewood, and there was ample space at our site for my buddy and I to fit our two tents. We had a good time after we finished lugging our stuff to the site. Wasn’t too bad.
Jul 17, 2022 · Michael ThomasMostly quiet, low frills camping spot. Manual pump well, so bring a buddy..or strong kid to help you. Toilets looked clean and maintainedNo firewood sales at this site so if you need want to toast marshmallows or feel cozy, kinda out of luck u less you can scrape together some wood from the underbrush or similar.
