Fiddlehead Campground Introduce
For local users exploring "camping near me" in the Fryeburg, Maine area, Fiddlehead Campground, located at 13 Lovell Rd, Fryeburg, ME 04037, USA, presents a unique camping opportunity with direct access to river and beach areas. You can reach them at (877) 534-3353 or their mobile number +1 877-534-3353 for inquiries. It's important for prospective visitors, especially local users familiar with the area, to be aware that recent reviews, specifically for the 2023 season, highlight unusual environmental conditions that significantly impacted the camping experience. Therefore, a thorough understanding of these recent reports is crucial when considering a visit to Fiddlehead Campground.
The environment of Fiddlehead Campground is typically characterized by its proximity to a river and the availability of beach camping. This offers a unique setting where campers can potentially enjoy waterfront views and easy access to swimming or tubing activities. However, recent reviews for the 2023 season paint a picture of significantly altered conditions due to heavy rainfall. The river was reported to be overly flooded, with water levels much deeper than usual, a strong current unsafe for typical swimming, and unusually cold temperatures. Consequently, certain camping areas, such as "Bottom of the Island/The Cove" and "Mid Beach," became inaccessible or partially submerged. Beach 2 was also affected by flooding, with a pond of water forming in the middle even after some recession. While Beach 1 was noted as smaller but seemingly okay, many side beaches past Beach 2 were underwater. These conditions drastically changed the typical environment and accessibility of the campground's key features. It's essential for local users who may have visited in previous years to understand that the 2023 season presented atypical environmental challenges.
The services at Fiddlehead Campground, based on recent reviews, appear to be more in line with a primitive or semi-primitive camping experience, particularly during the challenging conditions of the 2023 season. One reviewer mentioned the absence of running water and the presence of disgusting port-a-potties with no toilet paper and, in some cases, no locks. This is a significant departure from what the same reviewer recalled from previous years, where showers and bathrooms were available. While the staff is described as friendly, their helpfulness was questioned in one review. Despite the inaccessibility of their originally booked site due to flooding, one camper appreciated being relocated to an alternative site ("Wilson 1"). However, the lack of typical amenities like clean restrooms and running water is a crucial factor for local users to consider. Additionally, it was noted that tube rentals and shuttle services were not available, which might be relevant for those planning river activities, assuming river conditions become safer. The increase in the daily rate despite the reported lack of amenities was also a point of concern in one review. Therefore, local users accustomed to certain campground services should inquire specifically about the currently available amenities before making a reservation.
The features of Fiddlehead Campground traditionally revolve around its river and beach access, allowing for a unique camping experience where you can camp directly on the beach. This "camp anywhere on the beach" feature, as mentioned by one reviewer, can be appealing for those who enjoy waterfront camping. However, the severe flooding in 2023 significantly impacted the usability of these beach areas and the river itself. Another notable feature, albeit a negative one reported for the 2023 season, was the overwhelming level of mosquitoes. One reviewer described it as unbearable, making it difficult to cook, eat, or even sit still outdoors without being swarmed. They strongly recommended bringing long garments and noted that typical mosquito repellents and deterrents were largely ineffective. This unusual influx of mosquitoes is a critical factor for local users to be aware of if similar conditions persist. The proximity to the river, while typically a positive feature, became a significant challenge due to the flooding and associated mosquito issues in 2023. It is important for local users to ascertain the current conditions and features directly from the campground before planning a visit.
Regarding promotional information, the provided reviews do not mention any specific discounts or special offers. However, given the challenging conditions reported for the 2023 season and the increase in daily rates mentioned by one reviewer, it would be prudent for local users to inquire about the current pricing structure and any potential discounts that might be available, especially considering the reported limitations in amenities and environmental conditions. It is possible that the campground might adjust its rates or offer incentives to attract visitors despite the recent issues. Local residents might also inquire if there are any special rates for Maine residents. The best way to obtain information about current pricing and any promotions is to contact Fiddlehead Campground directly via phone. Given the significant impact of the 2023 weather events, it is crucial for local users to have the most up-to-date information before making a decision to camp at Fiddlehead Campground.
In conclusion, Fiddlehead Campground in Fryeburg, Maine, typically offers a unique "camping near me" experience with its beach and river access. However, recent reviews from the 2023 season highlight significant environmental challenges, including severe river flooding and an overwhelming mosquito infestation, which drastically impacted the camping experience and accessibility of certain areas. Additionally, one review noted a lack of running water and unsanitary port-a-potties, along with an increase in daily rates despite these conditions. While the staff is mentioned as friendly, their helpfulness was questioned. For local users considering Fiddlehead Campground, it is absolutely essential to contact them directly at (877) 534-3353 to get the most current information on river conditions, mosquito levels, available amenities, and pricing. Understanding the potential challenges reported for the 2023 season will allow local campers to make an informed decision and come fully prepared if they choose to visit. This year appears to be far from typical, and thorough preparation and up-to-date information are key.

Fiddlehead Campground Reviews
***This is a review STRICTLY for the 2023 Season*** PLEASE read - wish we knew what it was going to be like. This is NOT a typical year here and come prepared!!!RIVER CONDITIONS (July 21-23):This is my 5th year here. The first three were typical of one another. While last year was bone-dry and the river was barely floatable, this years rain has brought a totally overly flooded river. The waters are much deeper than you can stand, the current is a lot stronger than a typical person could swim against, and the water feels much colder than typical.CAMP EXPERIENCE:We were suppose to be at Bottom of the Island/The Cove. Due to flooding we could not access this area. Upon arrival they notified us and told us we would be moved to “Wilson 1” which was more than enough room for us all. I appreciate that they relocated us and although it was not where we wanted to be, it was nice to not be turned away.DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE LEVEL OF MOSQUITOES!!!! I wouldn’t wish this upon my worst enemy. It got so bad it made it impossible to even cook and eat meals. You could not sit still without being swarmed in your ears, eyes, face, all over. BRING long garments. No amount of tiki torches, fire, or spray can keep this many away. Walking to tube you’d be chased by easily 30 looking over your shoulder. The only time it was semi manageable was past 9pm with a HUGE fire.COME PREPARED IF YOU DARE TO GO!!!GOUND CONDITIONS:Beach 2 was flooded before we arrived, and recently receded slightly but still half covered. Mid Beach is itself a river, making any campsites between 1 & 2 in the woods inaccessible unless by by boat. There is a pond of water in the middle of Beach 2. Beach 1 looked ok, but smaller. Most if not all side beaches past 2 are underwater. This is an odd year for sure. This is NOT typical of Fiddlehead. If you still decide to go this year PLEASE go prepared for the mosquitos. Any exposed skin will be attacked at any and all times.
Jul 26, 2023 · Joe TagliaThis place is lame. The staff is friendly but not very helpful. There is no running water or clean port-a-potties and they are all disgusting with no toilet paper. Some don’t even have locks to let others know you are in there. The smell was unbearable. I remember I camped here years ago and they had showers and bathrooms and clean port-a-potties. We were on beach 1 so we knew it was gonna be a party but one group was up until 630am and wouldn’t be quiet so make sure to bring your headphones or ear plugs. It is cool that you can camp anywhere on the beach! I would never spend $40 a night though with these kinds of accommodations. Also no tube rental or shuttle service. Crazy they increased the daily rate!!
Aug 08, 2022 · The TruthI've run a 50 person trip for 25 years , there isn't a better place to be in the summer then Fiddlehead campground & Saco River. Most relaxing , fun, and crazy place to be in the summer months . A very inexpensive place to forget about your day to day life. If you haven't been here before , put.it on your bucket list!!!
Jun 09, 2020 · Kyle PhillipsReview for July 28-30. Like most reviews, my family has been staying at this campground for years. Since under new ownership our stays have been going downhill. We arrived on a Friday morning around 11 and it took us 1.5 hours to wait in a traffic line of cars to get to the check in hut. It was Awful. Then the second you step out of your car you’re attacked by mosquitoes. ATTACKED! It’s a scene out of a movie, I can’t describe. You are literally getting eaten alive even with bug spray and clothes on. Also, our site used to have 2 Porto potties that were cleaned every morning. This year it was down to 1 and it wasn’t cleaned the entire weekend we were there. Very upset about this years experience.
Aug 17, 2023 · Chelsea WalkerBeen going here for years, used to be a great place the past few years have been bad. This year 7/28-7/30 was the worst and I will never return to this camp unless new management takes over. Here is the list of why you should look for a different campground1. The line to get in was 4 hours long and they only had one person working the booth its 2023 get an electronic system.2. They don’t spray for mosquitos I am not lying when I say thousands of them were swarming. Who ever owns this campground is so cheap for not spraying. It should be criminal.3. People stay up to 430AM blaring bad music they don’t keep it down at all and show no respect.4. The price is way to damn high! It used to be half what it is today and you would get three times the value.5. The campground is unclean trash on the beaches people leave trash everywhere.6. I heard it recently went under new management they are doing a terrible job I would be surprised if they remain open.If you are looking for a place to enjoy a weekend pick another campground the party scene isn’t worth the price or a terribly run campground.
