Fort Union Campsite Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Osceola, Missouri area, Fort Union Campsite presents an option within the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, specifically in the southern part of the Piercing Arrow section. Located at Osceola, MO 64776, USA, Fort Union offers a camping experience within a natural setting, though it's important to consider its specific characteristics and location based on available reviews.
One of the key aspects highlighted in the reviews is Fort Union's remoteness within the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. It is described as being a "significant walk to anywhere at P.A." (Piercing Arrow), indicating that accessing other areas and facilities within the reservation might require considerable travel on foot. However, it is also noted to be a "short walk to Ico," suggesting a closer proximity to that specific area within the larger reservation. For local users considering Fort Union, the willingness and ability to undertake potentially long walks to other parts of the reservation will be a crucial factor.
Environmental conditions at Fort Union appear to be a consideration, particularly regarding moisture. One reviewer mentioned experiencing "a lot of rain" during their stay, which resulted in "many muddy areas around Fort Union - more than most campsites." This suggests that the terrain around Fort Union might be more prone to becoming waterlogged and muddy during periods of wet weather. Campers planning a visit should be prepared for potentially muddy conditions, especially after rainfall, and bring appropriate footwear and gear.
In terms of amenities, Fort Union offers some standard features typically found within the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. It is mentioned as having a "good pavilion and lolly." A pavilion usually provides a covered area for activities, shelter from the elements, and potentially picnic tables. The term "lolly" in the context of scout reservations often refers to a basic latrine or outhouse facility. The presence of these standard amenities suggests a certain level of basic infrastructure at the campsite.
A notable feature of Fort Union is the presence of a "significant building which is great for activities." This building could serve various purposes, such as indoor meeting space, program areas, or shelter for group activities. The availability of such a building could be a significant advantage, especially for larger groups or during inclement weather, providing a dedicated space for gatherings and events.
The environment around Fort Union offers a mix of shade and open areas. The review notes that "there is quite a bit of shade, but there also is quite a bit of open area." This combination could mean that while some parts of the campsite offer protection from the sun, other areas might be more exposed, potentially making them "hotter than most P.A. campsites," especially during warmer times of the day. Campers should be prepared for varying levels of sun exposure depending on their chosen campsite within Fort Union.
One reviewer offers a comparative perspective, suggesting that they "would try to get a location closer to the center of P.A." if possible, though they acknowledge that Fort Union "is not a terrible option." They personally express a preference for camping in Sawmill due to its location, shade, and spacing. This subjective comparison highlights that while Fort Union might be adequate, other campsites within the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation might offer different advantages that some campers might prioritize.
Adding a more humorous and perhaps cautionary note, another reviewer describes the overall experience within the Bartle Scout Reservation in a way that might apply to Fort Union due to its natural setting. They ask, "Do you like ticks, spiders, bugs? Have you ever felt hotels were just ‘too nice’?" This playfully suggests that camping in the reservation involves a close encounter with nature, including its less desirable aspects like insects. They also mention that "merit badges are not included," which is a lighthearted remark relevant to the scout reservation context but not directly about the campsite itself.
Considering all the available information, Fort Union Campsite offers a relatively remote camping experience within the southern part of the Piercing Arrow section of the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation near Osceola, MO. It provides standard amenities like a pavilion and lolly, as well as a significant activity building. However, potential campers should be aware of the possibility of muddy conditions, especially after rain, and the mix of shade and open areas which might lead to higher temperatures in some parts of the site. Its remoteness means that accessing other areas within the reservation involves significant walking. While it's considered a decent option, some reviewers suggest that other campsites within the reservation might offer more favorable locations or environmental conditions.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are specifically interested in the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation and are comfortable with a more remote setting, Fort Union Campsite could be a viable choice. The presence of an activity building might be particularly attractive for group outings or planned programs. However, it's essential to weigh the benefits against the potential drawbacks of remoteness, muddy conditions, and variable shade. If proximity to other areas within the reservation or consistently shaded campsites are a priority, exploring other options within Piercing Arrow or the wider H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation might be advisable.
To make an informed decision, local users might want to consult maps of the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation to understand the relative location of Fort Union to other campsites and facilities. If possible, contacting the reservation directly could provide more detailed information about the specific amenities at Fort Union, the typical ground conditions, and any recommendations based on the time of year. While no direct promotional information is available, the unique setting within a scout reservation and the presence of an activity building could be considered features that might appeal to certain groups or individuals seeking a particular type of outdoor experience.

Fort Union Campsite Reviews
Fort Union is a decent though not great campsite in the southern part of Piercing Arrow, of the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation.
