Based on glowing reviews from recent visitors, this campground boasts a serene environment, excellent amenities, and features that cater to a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, including those with disabilities and pet owners.
One camper who stayed at Campground #5 specifically highlighted its prime location right next to a creek. The soothing sounds of the rushing water were a significant benefit, contributing to a peaceful sleeping environment. This creekside setting suggests a naturally beautiful and calming ambiance for those looking to escape the noise of everyday life. The reviewer also praised the campground for being "well kept" and noted that the restrooms were "clean and nearby," indicating a commitment to maintaining a pleasant and convenient camping experience for all visitors. Furthermore, the fact that their "family and the dog had a great time" underscores the campground's welcoming attitude towards both children and pets, making it an appealing destination for family outings.
An important point to note, as mentioned by the same reviewer, is the lack of cell service in the area. While this might be an inconvenience for some, the reviewer humorously acknowledged it as part of the appeal, stating, "but hey that is what it is all about. lol." This suggests that Frank Gross Recreation Area offers a true escape from digital connectivity, allowing campers to fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings and enjoy a more disconnected and peaceful experience. This lack of service should be considered by those who rely heavily on their phones for communication or navigation, particularly when leaving the area.
Another valuable piece of information from this review is that the campground is "Disabled Friendly." This is a significant feature, indicating that efforts have been made to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities, which is commendable and makes the recreation area inclusive for a wider range of local users seeking 'camping near me'. Specific details about the accessible features are not provided, but this designation suggests considerations in areas such as pathways, restrooms, and potentially campsites.
Adding to the allure of Frank Gross Recreation Area is the explicit mention that it is "Great for Stargazing." The remote location, away from significant light pollution, likely contributes to exceptionally clear night skies, offering campers a fantastic opportunity to observe stars, planets, and other celestial wonders. This feature can be a major draw for astronomy enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates the beauty of the night sky.
Further positive feedback comes from a camper who stayed at Campgrounds #6 and #7. While these sites are not explicitly labeled "creekside," the reviewer noted that they are situated "right on the river" and are considered "just as great as any of the other sites." This expands the appeal of the campground to those who might prefer the slightly different environment and potential for river-related activities offered by these locations. The reviewer even stated that "#6 is my favorite," suggesting a particularly desirable spot along the river.
A significant highlight for this reviewer was the excellent fishing opportunities right by their campsite (#6). They reported catching "almost a dozen small wild rainbows on a dry fly" and indicated that "there are definitely larger stocked trout in these waters too." This makes Frank Gross Recreation Area a prime destination for local anglers looking for 'camping near me' with immediate access to quality fishing. The presence of both wild and stocked trout suggests a healthy and diverse fish population in the river.
Overall, this reviewer summarized their experience as "just a fantastic campground for fishing and hanging out," encapsulating the key draws of Frank Gross Recreation Area: a beautiful natural setting along the water and excellent opportunities for relaxation and outdoor activities like fishing.
Based on these reviews, the environment of Frank Gross Recreation Area is characterized by the soothing presence of a creek and a river, providing picturesque campsites with the calming sounds of flowing water. The services and features of Frank Gross Recreation Area include well-kept grounds, clean and nearby restrooms, and a welcoming environment for families and pets. The "Disabled Friendly" designation indicates accessibility considerations. A significant feature is the direct access to water – both a creek and a river – offering the auditory pleasure of flowing water and opportunities for fishing. The availability of specific campground numbers (e.g., #5, #6, #7) in the reviews might suggest a numbered or organized layout of campsites within the recreation area, potentially allowing for specific site requests based on preferences (e.g., creekside or riverfront).
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the positive feedback regarding the scenic locations (creekside and riverfront), the quality of fishing, the suitability for stargazing, and the clean and accessible facilities serves as strong organic promotion for local users seeking 'camping near me' that offers a genuine connection with nature and a peaceful escape.
For local users considering a camping trip to Frank Gross Recreation Area, the reviews suggest a well-maintained and highly enjoyable experience, particularly for those who appreciate the sounds of nature, are interested in fishing, enjoy stargazing, and are looking for a pet-friendly and potentially disabled-friendly location. The lack of cell service should be factored into planning, perhaps encouraging a greater focus on enjoying the present moment and the natural surroundings.

Campground #5 was right next to creek. The sounds of the rushing water was soothing while sleeping. Campground was well kept and the restrooms were clean and nearby. My family and the dog had a great time. I have to admit, leaving the way we came in was quite difficult because there is no cell service, but hey that is what it is all about. lol*Disabled Friendly*FyI: Great for Stargazing
Aug 26, 2024 · Jesse PainterCampgrounds #6 and #7 technically don’t say “creekside” but they are right on the river and are just as great as any of the other sites. #6 is my favorite. Caught almost a dozen small wild rainbows on a dry fly right by the campsite, There are definitely larger stocked trout in these waters too. Overall just a fantastic campground for fishing and hanging out.
Aug 08, 2022 · Per SveenVery well maintained!! No litter so campers and Staff are doing a great job!ow water in Rock Creek as everywhere else now. Still, top shelf experience! Has toilet, and 4 bucks a night with Access Pass otherwise 8.
Oct 06, 2019 · michael tichonukAwesome spot, very well kept and lots of trout. Gets full fast so get there early and respect yer neighbors. No cell signal at the actual camp site but if your drive about 10 minutes back down towards where the Benton mackaye trail crosses the gravel road you’ll get some bars. Easy drive to deep hole camp ground if all sites are occupied.
