French Pete Campground Introduce
Are you a local user in Oregon looking for a "camping near me" experience that combines the tranquility of a wooded setting with the allure of a pristine river? French Pete Campground, located in Blue River, OR 97413, offers just that. Situated about 12 miles south of Highway 126 on Forest Road 19, also known as the scenic Aufderheide Drive, this campground provides a peaceful escape into nature. Based on recent customer reviews, French Pete Campground is a highly recommended destination for those seeking a blend of outdoor adventure and serene relaxation. Let's delve into the details of what makes this campground special.
Environment: Quiet, Wooded, and Riverside
French Pete Campground is consistently described as a "quiet, fully wooded campground," which immediately sets the tone for a peaceful retreat. Most of the campsites back right up to the river, offering not only easy access to the water but also the soothing sounds of the flowing river. The sites are generally large, with "plenty of space between camp spots," ensuring a sense of privacy and room to spread out, even accommodating more than one tent on many sites (though a few are very small). This spaciousness enhances the feeling of being immersed in nature without being crowded.
The campground's location along the Aufderheide Scenic Byway adds to its appeal, providing beautiful drives and access to other natural attractions in the area. Despite the positive feedback about the water access from most sites, one reviewer mentioned they "didn't see any problem at all with the water," implying that potable water is available, though specifics about water spigots at each site aren't detailed. The overall environment is one of natural beauty and tranquility, making it an ideal choice for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
It's worth noting that one reviewer mentioned the town of Blue River was "totally destroyed in the 2020 fire." While this is a significant local event, the review implies that the campground itself was not affected to the point of closure, and the natural beauty of the area persists.
Services and Amenities: Helpful Hosts and Basic Facilities
One of the most praised aspects of French Pete Campground is its camp hosts, Thom, Amy, and Ted. One reviewer specifically highlighted their exceptional helpfulness, noting that they assisted in finding the best campsite, provided guidance on hiking trails (including local hidden treasures like Hidden Lake), and generally contributed to a great camping experience. The hope that these hosts would still be there on a return visit speaks volumes about their positive impact on guests.
The reviews also mention easy access to the river from most campsites, which can be considered an amenity for those interested in fishing or simply enjoying the riverside. While specific details about other amenities like restrooms, fire pits, or picnic tables at each site aren't extensively covered, the mention of reservable sites on recreation.gov suggests the presence of standard campground facilities. The availability of both reservable and first-come-first-serve sites offers flexibility for different planning styles.
The proximity to Terwilliger Hot Springs and the swimming area at Slide Creek Campground (about 3 miles away) effectively extends the amenities and recreational opportunities available to those staying at French Pete.
Features: Fly Fishing, Hiking, and Nearby Attractions
French Pete Campground boasts several key features that make it attractive to outdoor enthusiasts:
- Fly Fishing: It's highlighted as a "great location for fly fishing," appealing to anglers.
- Hiking: The French Pete trailhead is directly across a small access road (unmarked) from the campground, providing access to a "great trail up and along the river." This makes it ideal for hikers looking to explore the area.
- Riverside Camping: Most sites back directly onto the river, offering easy access and scenic views.
- Proximity to Attractions: It's conveniently located about 3 miles from Terwilliger Hot Springs, known for its relaxing natural pools, and the swimming area at Slide Creek Campground.
- Scenic Drive: The campground is situated along the Aufderheide Scenic Byway (Forest Road 19), making the journey to and from the campground a visually appealing experience.
- Spacious Sites: The majority of the 17 sites are very large, accommodating multiple tents and providing ample space between campers.
The nearby tiny towns of Rainbow and McKenzie Bridge, about a half-hour away, offer a few restaurants for those who might want a break from camp cooking.
Potential Drawbacks: Limited Immediate Amenities Detail and Post-Fire Landscape
Based on the reviews, the primary potential drawback isn't a negative aspect of the campground itself but rather the limited detail provided about standard campground amenities beyond water access and the presence of camp hosts. Campers seeking specific facilities might need to do further research or contact the managing authority.
The mention of the Blue River town being destroyed by fire in 2020, while not directly impacting the campground as described, might mean that the immediate surrounding area has a changed landscape. However, the natural beauty that draws people to the region seems to persist around the campground itself.

French Pete Campground Reviews
We just got back from French Pete and are already planning our next visit. Most sites back right up to the river and plenty of space between camp spots. Great location for fly fishing, hiking and visiting local Hidden Lake. But the best thing: Thom, Amy and Ted, camp hosts. They helped us find the best site, helped us navigate the best hiking and even told us about local hidden treasures. It was great and hope they are still there when we get back.
Jun 28, 2020 · Ruth BQuiet, fully wooded campground 12 miles south of Hwy 126, on Forest Road 19 (the scenic Aufderheide). There are 17 mostly very large sites, with plenty of room for more than one tent (a few very small ones). Some are reservable on recreation.gov, some are first come first serve. During the week, there were several choices. We didn't see any problem at all with the water, and there is easy access to the river from most sites. It's about 3 miles from both Terwilliger Hot Springs and the swimming area in Slide Creek CG. The French Pete trailhead is directly across the road, down a small access road (no sign), which gives you access to a great trail up and along the river. The tiny towns of Rainbow and McKenzie Bridge have a few restaurants about a half-hour away. Unfortunately, Blue River was totally destroyed in the 2020 fire. All in all, a great campground in a great location.
Jul 30, 2022 · Debra WassermanGreat campground, clean and close to the shallow stream (connected to the river ). Bring drinking water .Shade and not to many mosquitoes.
Aug 04, 2020 · Ron KashaniNice campground with different spaces, some of which are along a stream. You would have to bushwack your way to the streams though. Bring your own water or a good filter. The well water in the campground is consistently brown. The hosts stated it is safe for drinking. The host said the forest ranger tests the water monthly for quality and deems it safe for drinking. Aside from the well water, the campsites are good sized and somewhat private.
