Golden Lake Campground Introduce
Attention local camping enthusiasts searching for "camping near me"! Golden Lake Campground, located in Iron River, MI 49935, USA, has recently reopened and is offering a unique camping experience. While the campground faced significant damage from a windstorm in 2020, extensive cleanup efforts have taken place, and as of July 2022, it is once again welcoming campers. Notably, for the remainder of the 2022 camping season, Golden Lake Campground is not charging any fees, presenting an exceptional opportunity for an affordable getaway in the Upper Peninsula.
The environment of Golden Lake Campground has undergone a significant transformation due to the 2020 windstorm. What was once described as a "heavily wooded campground is now almost completely open." This dramatic change has resulted in a new and arguably enhanced feature: lake views from nearly every campsite. The campground is situated on a hill that slopes upwards from Golden Lake, and with the removal of many trees, the panoramic vistas of the lake are now widely accessible to campers. While the loss of extensive tree cover might alter the shade and overall feel of the campground, the trade-off is the potential for beautiful and unobstructed lake views, allowing you to fully appreciate the waterfront setting. Golden Lake itself is described as "equally nice" and suitable for both fishing and swimming, making the campground an attractive destination for water-based activities. The surrounding area of Iron River in the Upper Peninsula is known for its natural beauty, so even with the changed landscape within the campground, you can still expect to be immersed in the broader scenic environment of the region.
In terms of services, it's crucial for potential visitors to be aware of a significant current limitation. The windstorm caused a massive pine tree to snap the hand pump that served as the campground's drinking water source. As of the latest information, this pump has not yet been replaced, meaning "the campground is without a drinking water source." Campers planning a visit to Golden Lake Campground must be entirely self-sufficient in terms of water supply and bring an adequate amount for drinking, cooking, and sanitation. On a more positive note, the reviews indicate that "the vault toilet buildings and most picnic tables escaped the storm unscathed," providing essential sanitation facilities and a place for outdoor dining. Additionally, one reviewer mentioned that "the fire pits were really nice" and appreciated the "adjustable cooking grate," suggesting that these amenities are in good working order. The abundance of downed trees from the storm has also created a readily available source of "plenty of free firewood around." However, campers should exercise caution and ensure that any firewood collection and burning adhere to local regulations and safety guidelines. Given the current lack of a reliable drinking water source, it is strongly recommended that visitors come fully prepared with their own water and any necessary water purification methods.
The primary features of Golden Lake Campground currently revolve around its lake access and the newly opened lake views. The adjacency to Golden Lake provides convenient opportunities for fishing and swimming. Anglers can look forward to casting their lines in the "nice lake," while those seeking to cool off on a warm day can enjoy a swim. The transformation of the campground from heavily wooded to mostly open has inadvertently created a situation where "nearly every site now has a lake view," which is a significant draw for many campers who value waterfront scenery. The availability of free firewood due to the storm debris, while a temporary situation, is also a notable feature for the 2022 season. The presence of "nice" fire pits with adjustable cooking grates enhances the camping experience for those who enjoy cooking over an open fire. Despite the damage and the lack of running water, the fundamental appeal of a lakeside campground in a scenic region remains. The fact that camping is free for the 2022 season further adds to its attractiveness, especially for budget-conscious travelers and locals looking for an inexpensive outdoor getaway.
As explicitly stated in the reviews, Golden Lake Campground is "not charging fees for the 2022 camping season." This presents a significant promotional aspect for local users looking for "camping near me" without incurring campsite costs. This temporary waiver of fees is a direct result of the disruption caused by the windstorm and the ongoing recovery process. While this is a considerable benefit for campers in 2022, it is essential to understand that this is a temporary situation. For future camping seasons, it is highly likely that regular fees will be reinstated. Therefore, local users should take advantage of this free camping opportunity while it lasts. It is advisable to check with the relevant authorities, such as the Iron River Parks and Recreation department or the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, for any updates on the campground's status, the timeline for the water pump replacement, and when regular fees are expected to resume. While there are no specific long-term promotional offers mentioned, the current lack of fees for the entire 2022 season serves as a significant incentive for local campers to experience Golden Lake Campground and its newly unveiled lake views.
In conclusion, Golden Lake Campground near Iron River offers a unique and currently free camping opportunity for local residents. While the landscape has been significantly altered by a past windstorm, resulting in open campsites with widespread lake views, the fundamental appeal of its location adjacent to Golden Lake for fishing and swimming remains. Campers should be aware of the current lack of a drinking water source and come fully prepared. The presence of vault toilets and picnic tables, along with nice fire pits and the temporary abundance of free firewood, provides essential amenities for a comfortable stay. The fact that camping is free for the 2022 season makes Golden Lake Campground an exceptionally attractive option for those seeking an affordable and scenic "camping near me" experience. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to rediscover Golden Lake Campground and enjoy its natural beauty and lakeside charm, keeping in mind the current service limitations.

Jul 30, 2022 · Greg KruegerNice campground to spend a night or a few nights. Plenty of free firewood around with the downed trees, but overall the campground isn’t too bad. There is still no water, or cost to camp here. The fire pits were really nice, I liked the adjustable cooking grate.
May 26, 2024 · Nick PoshStarted out good. Lots of wood. Peaceful and other campers were chill too. We heard from one of them that the camper in the site next to us had been sitting there for over a month, after a big party and place was trashed. Just after 9 PM on our second night, a LOUD family with unleashed dog arrived, fired up their LOUD generator, and now I'm trying to find somewhere else for tomorrow. They are the only other campers whose voices I've heard since we've been here. And they are RIGHT NEXT DOOR. With little tree coverage between us, I just cannot. Thank you to the majority of campers out there who respect others.

Mar 20, 2025 · Noah VolkRan across this place looking for a spot to camp. It was perfect for what we were looking for. Quiet, only one other person there and free. Camped right along the lake too.
