Imp Lake Campground Introduce
Are you a local outdoor enthusiast searching for "camping near me" that offers a genuine connection with nature without excessive frills? Imp Lake Campground, situated near Watersmeet, Michigan, within the vast and beautiful Ottawa National Forest, might be exactly what you're looking for. This campground provides a classic, rustic camping experience, reminiscent of national forest campgrounds from the 1990s, offering essential amenities and access to the serene Imp Lake and surrounding natural beauty.
Immerse Yourself in a Picturesque Lakeside Setting
Imp Lake Campground boasts a truly picturesque location directly adjacent to Imp Lake. The campground offers several lakefront sites in its second loop, providing stunning views and easy access to the water. Imagine waking up to the tranquil sight of the lake shimmering in the morning light. The shoreline near the picnic area is swimmable, offering a refreshing dip on warm days. For those who enjoy boating, a convenient boat launch is located right at the campground, allowing you to easily explore the calm waters of Imp Lake. Whether you're interested in fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying a leisurely boat ride, Imp Lake provides a wonderful aquatic playground.
Nestled within the Ottawa National Forest, the campground is surrounded by a rich tapestry of woodlands. Towering trees provide shade and a sense of seclusion for many campsites. The natural environment offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Keep an eye out for local wildlife that may frequent the area, adding to the natural charm of your camping experience.
Basic Yet Well-Maintained Amenities
Imp Lake Campground provides campers with the fundamental amenities needed for a comfortable stay in a natural setting. You'll find multiple vault toilets strategically located throughout the campground. While some reviewers note their age, these facilities are reported to be well-maintained and functional. Drinking water is available via two iconic hand pumps, one in each of the campground's loops. It's important to note that the availability of drinking water service may be seasonal, typically provided during the summer and early fall when the first and largest loop is open. During other times, particularly in the spring and late fall when only the second loop is open, drinking water may not be available, so campers should plan accordingly.
Each campsite is equipped with a vintage, all-wood picnic table, adding to the nostalgic charm of the campground. Fire rings are also provided at each site, perfect for enjoying evening campfires under the starry skies and cooking delicious outdoor meals. A dumpster is available for convenient waste disposal, helping to keep the campground clean.
Features and Recreational Opportunities
One of the standout features of Imp Lake Campground, as highlighted by visitors, is the excellent nature trail that winds through the woods. This trail offers a great opportunity to stretch your legs, immerse yourself in the surrounding forest, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. It's a worthwhile hike for nature lovers of all ages.
The immediate adjacency of a picnic area with a swimmable shoreline is another significant advantage. This provides a dedicated space for families and individuals to relax by the lake, enjoy picnic lunches, and take refreshing swims. The presence of a boat launch directly at the campground further enhances the recreational opportunities available to campers.
Beyond the immediate campground, Imp Lake's location within the Ottawa National Forest provides access to a vast network of hiking trails, fishing lakes, and other natural attractions. The Watersmeet area is known for its stunning natural beauty, including numerous waterfalls, pristine lakes, and expansive forests. Exploring nearby areas like Bond Falls or the Sylvania Wilderness Area can easily be done from Imp Lake Campground.
Seasonal Information and Planning Your Trip
It's important to note the seasonal operation of Imp Lake Campground. The first and largest loop is typically open during the summer and early fall, while the second loop remains open year-round. However, the availability of certain services, such as drinking water, may vary depending on the season. There has been some question raised by visitors regarding whether fees are required during seasons when drinking water is not provided, so it's advisable to inquire about this when making your reservation or upon arrival.
Given the rustic nature of the campground and the potential for seasonal service limitations, it's recommended to come prepared. Bringing your own water, especially during the off-season, is a wise precaution. Additionally, insect repellent is highly recommended, particularly during the warmer months.
The positive reviews from visitors emphasize the picturesque location and the value of the basic amenities provided. For those seeking a traditional, no-frills camping experience in a beautiful natural setting with lake access and a hiking trail, Imp Lake Campground is an excellent choice. The well-maintained infrastructure, despite its age, ensures a comfortable and enjoyable stay for the right kind of camper.
To plan your visit to Imp Lake Campground, you can likely contact the Ottawa National Forest or relevant recreation.gov platforms for reservations and the most up-to-date information on fees and service availability. The phone number provided, (906) 358-4724 or +1 906-358-4724, may also be helpful for inquiries. Embrace the historic charm and natural beauty of Imp Lake Campground for your next "camping near me" adventure in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Imp Lake Campground Reviews
A nice spot to camp if campground camping is your thing. Plenty of outhouses, a dumpster, water from a pump well, boat launch, and picnic area. Garbage is still a problem at the beach which is idiotic. The nature trail though the woods is a great bonus and worth the hike!
Jun 12, 2023 · Nathan MillerThe age of infrastructure here makes this place a historic gem. Imp Lake Campground looks like what you might imagine a national forest campground looking like in the 1990’s.The vault toilets appear to be 40+ years old. Picnic tables are the vintage all-wood variety that got replaced across most Midwest national forests years ago. But infrastructure here has been well maintained; for the most part, things are still in good shape. The first and largest loop of this campground is open only during summer and early fall; the second loop is open year-round. There’s some question as to whether fees are required during the seasons when no drinking water is provided. Two iconic hand pumps provide drinking water, one in each loop. As of mid May neither one was in service for the season yet. That didn’t stop a couple families from setting up camp in the second loop’s lakefront sites.Imp Lake offers just the basics - vault toilets and drinking water - but for the right type of camper in the right setting, that’s all you need for a great trip. The location is picturesque and boasts a hiking trailhead right at the campground. A picnic area with swimmable shoreline and a boat landing are immediately adjacent.

Oct 23, 2018 · Pat RickCalled ahead to see if they had showers and was told yes. They lied. Had to chase my 5 year old grandson around with a pitcher of water trying to rinse the soap off bc the water pump was cold. We did not stay. We would have been the only ones in the place too. This is the only place out of the 5 that had garbage laying around. Hey campers clean up after yourself.
