Lac Vieux Desert Campground Introduce
For local residents in the Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin area looking for a camping getaway and searching under the category "camping near me," Lac Vieux Desert Campground presents an option nestled within the expansive Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest. Located in Land O' Lakes, WI 54540, this campground offers a lakeside setting with a mix of accessibility and rustic charm. While opinions vary, it provides essential amenities and a unique feature for tent campers, making it a noteworthy consideration for your next outdoor adventure.
The environment of Lac Vieux Desert Campground offers a somewhat varied experience depending on the specific loop you choose. According to camper feedback, the northern loop of the campground has neighboring cabins and homes visible, which might detract slightly from a feeling of complete wilderness immersion. However, the southern loop is described as offering a "slightly more rustic experience," suggesting a greater sense of seclusion and a more natural setting. For those seeking a more traditional backcountry feel, opting for a site in the southern loop might be preferable.
Being situated near Lac Vieux Desert, the campground benefits from the presence of a "good fishing lake." This provides a significant draw for anglers who can anticipate opportunities to catch various fish species. While the specific types of fish and the quality of fishing are not detailed, the mention of it being a good fishing lake suggests a potentially rewarding experience for those interested in spending time on the water with a rod and reel. The lake also offers a "nice swimming beach," providing a recreational amenity for campers looking to cool off and enjoy some time by the water. A nearby shelter and picnic area further enhance the lakeside experience, offering a space for meals, relaxation, and protection from the elements.
In terms of amenities, Lac Vieux Desert Campground provides basic but essential facilities. Campers can rely on a hand pump for accessing drinking water, ensuring a necessary resource for hydration. The presence of "several vault toilets" indicates that restroom facilities are available throughout the campground. It's important to note that vault toilets are non-flushing and typically more rustic than modern flush toilets. A significant future improvement mentioned is that "electricity will be coming to a portion of sites here in the near future." While currently not available for all sites, this upcoming addition will be a welcome upgrade for campers who rely on electricity for medical devices or simply prefer the convenience of powered campsites.
One of the standout features of Lac Vieux Desert Campground, making it particularly appealing for tent campers, is that it is "one of - if not the only - campground in the Chequamegon Nicolet with actual designated flat tent pads framed by wood." The review highlights that "not all but many sites here have them," and this is considered "certainly a nice amenity for tent campers." These designated tent pads offer a level and defined area for setting up tents, potentially improving comfort and protecting groundsheets from uneven terrain or moisture. For those who prioritize a good tent setup, this unique feature could be a major deciding factor when choosing a "camping near me" location.
While one reviewer offered a somewhat reserved opinion, stating, "Not the best spot in the national forests," this subjective assessment should be balanced against the more specific positive feedback regarding the lake, swimming beach, and the unique tent pads. Different campers have varying priorities, and what might not be the "best" for one could still be a perfectly adequate or even preferred option for another, especially considering the specific amenities and the lakeside location.
Given the lack of specific promotional information, local users are encouraged to seek further details through official channels, such as the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest website or by contacting the forest service directly. Information regarding reservation procedures, fees, specific campsite amenities (including which sites will have electricity in the future), and any current regulations or advisories would be valuable for planning a trip. Additionally, inquiring about the availability of the flat tent pads when making a reservation would be advisable for tent campers.

The northern loop has some visibility of nearby residences, while the southern loop provides a more rustic feel. Jul 07, 2024 · Greg KruegerNot the best spot in the national forests. Good fishing lake.
Sep 24, 2023 · Pat HansonIi like this Campground.sites are wooded and fairly easy to back into. You can buy wood nearby but there's plenty of wood laying on the ground. There is a boat launch but it's not maintained and you can't launch large or heavy boats cause it's to shallow. They're are lauches you can drive to nearby. I had to leave 2 days early and the office in eagle River said no refunds don't pay more than 2 or 3 days at a time. The forest service are useless and out to lunch. All in all I would go back to camp here.

Aug 21, 2022 · Jared BickfordTerrific Northwoods camping. Fishing is best late spring thru 4th of July although other nearby lakes in the area produce well after that. Nice beach for the kiddos.
