Grayson Highlands Campground Introduce
Looking for an exceptional "camping near me" experience in a beautiful mountain setting? Consider Grayson Highlands Campground, located within Grayson Highlands State Park near the Visitors Center at VA-362, Mouth of Wilson, VA 24363, USA. Based on glowing reviews from fellow campers, this campground offers a unique blend of stunning natural beauty, wildlife encounters, and convenient amenities, making it a prime choice for local adventurers.
One of the most frequently highlighted aspects of Grayson Highlands Campground is its breathtaking environment. Situated in a high mountain area with an elevation of over 4000 feet, the park boasts "scenic nature" that captivates visitors. This higher elevation contributes to temperatures that are "usually pleasant even in the summer," offering a refreshing escape from warmer lowland climates. For local users searching for "camping near me" where they can enjoy cooler summer weather amidst beautiful scenery, Grayson Highlands appears to be an ideal destination.
A truly unique feature of this campground and the surrounding area is the presence of wild ponies that "roam nearby just off the Appalachian Trail." These iconic animals add a touch of magic to the camping experience, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography. One reviewer even mentioned a friendly pony that walked around the campground. This interaction with the wild ponies is a significant draw and sets Grayson Highlands apart for those seeking a memorable "camping near me" adventure.
The campground also provides access to the renowned Appalachian Trail, making it a fantastic basecamp for hikers and backpackers. One reviewer noted that the "hiking trails in campground and surrounding areas were amazing." Whether you're looking for a short nature walk or a more challenging trek along the AT, Grayson Highlands offers a wealth of opportunities to explore the stunning mountain landscapes on foot. The proximity to the Virginia Creeper Trail, as mentioned by a reviewer who enjoyed a less crowded weekday experience, further enhances the appeal for those interested in biking and exploring the region.
In terms of services and facilities, one reviewer specifically mentioned a "clean bathhouse," which is a significant plus for many campers who appreciate well-maintained hygiene facilities. The presence of "friendly camp hosts" also contributes to a positive and welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that visitors feel supported during their stay. The overall ambiance during the week is described as "very quiet," which would appeal to those seeking a peaceful and relaxing "camping near me" retreat.
However, the reviews also provide some constructive feedback. One camper pointed out that "the campsites are not very level" and suggested the need for "more gravel to reduce the muddiness during rainy periods." This is a practical consideration for campers, as uneven sites can make setting up tents or parking RVs more challenging, and muddy conditions can impact the overall comfort of the camping experience. Potential visitors might want to come prepared for potentially uneven terrain and the possibility of muddy areas after rain.
Despite this minor drawback, the overwhelming sentiment from the reviews is positive, with one camper stating they "couldn't ask for more perfect weather" during their early September visit and praising the overall camping area. The combination of scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, hiking opportunities, and clean facilities makes Grayson Highlands Campground a highly recommended option for those searching for "camping near me" in the Virginia Highlands.

Grayson Highlands Campground Reviews
Beautiful state park campground. The main attractions for me are the scenic nature of this high mountain area, the wild ponies that roam nearby just off the Appalachian Trail, and the fact that the temperature is usually pleasant even in the summer due to the 4000’+ elevation. The only downside is that the campsites are not very level, could use some improvements such as more gravel to reduce the muddiness during rainy periods.
Jul 11, 2023 · Anthony SmithGreat camping area, we had 2 adults and 2 big dogs, clean bathhouse, friendly camp hosts, very quiet during the week which is nice, couldn't ask for more perfect weather for the 1st week in September, one pony walked around and is friendly, hiking trails in campground and surrounding areas were amazing. Also did the Virgina Creeper on a Wednesday so not a ton of people during the week.
Sep 08, 2018 · Abby StokerWe stayed 3 nights in our travel trailer at site 35 with electric and water hookups. Positives: sites are nicely spaced to give privacy, many sites are pull-through, each site has picnic table and fire ring, most sites are wooded/shaded, rest rooms and showers are among the nicest we have experienced at any park. The main disadvantage is the sites are not very level. We were able to level our trailer satisfactorily, but I could see it would be more difficult at some sites. Also, the pull-through sites at the north end of the campground (site numbers in 50s and 60s) are pretty tight against the campground road. Overall, our stay was very enjoyable and we would definitely return.
May 26, 2018 · Paul DamerellThey do everything right, the place is clean, but the campsites are on top of one another; our vehicle served as a sound/sight barrier on one side and our tent on the other (my photo looks like there is lots of room because it is a panorama).Site host on duty seems friendly and present; can be seen making rounds regularly. For a PM shower go to bathhouse a little early, 4-5p, to beat the rush and have ample hot water.
Jul 14, 2019 · Amanda BarthelExtremely beautiful and peaceful mountain ridge. Twin pinnacle and Wilburn ridge hiking trails are phenomenal, both my kids loved it. Campground is well spaced, quiet and pull-through spaces are nice. The bathroom is very clean, and the shower is warm and has excellent water pressure. Kids love to bike in the campground, and make new friends. Might be a little windy due to the elevation, we had our camper not tent camping, so no problem at all.
