Hardscrabble Campground Introduce
For those in search of "camping near me" within the Boise National Forest in Idaho, Hardscrabble Campground, located off Forest Road #698B near Cascade, ID 83611, USA, offers a small and potentially appealing option, particularly for those who value river access. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground presents a clean and well-maintained environment with a significant natural feature – the nearby river. However, its limited number of campsites and proximity to less regulated camping areas are important factors for prospective visitors to consider.
The environment of Hardscrabble Campground is characterized by its location within the Boise National Forest, suggesting a setting rich in natural beauty, including trees and the adjacent river. One reviewer specifically notes "great river access at all perimeter sites," indicating that many, if not all, campsites offer the benefit of being close to the water. The river itself is described as being approximately 75 to 100 feet wide and relatively shallow during the summer, with a depth of around 24 inches and a mild flow. This makes it particularly attractive for families, as the reviewer mentions "many safe pockets and places for children to play in the water." The gentle nature of the river during the summer months enhances the appeal for those looking for water-based recreation without strong currents or deep areas.
In terms of services and features, Hardscrabble Campground offers essential amenities for a comfortable camping experience. These include "fresh water" and "restrooms," which are fundamental for any organized campground. The primary feature, however, is undoubtedly the "access to the river," which provides opportunities for activities such as wading, fishing (subject to Idaho regulations), and simply enjoying the soothing sounds and views of the flowing water. The "clean campground" aspect, highlighted by one reviewer, suggests that the facilities and the overall area are well-maintained, contributing to a more pleasant stay.
However, there are crucial considerations due to the campground's small size. With "only 6 spots," availability is a significant factor. The reviewer notes that these sites "tend to be reserved fairly quickly," emphasizing the need for advance planning. While it might be possible to secure a spot on a weekday, particularly a Thursday, weekend availability is described as highly unlikely ("on weekends - forget it"). This limited capacity suggests that Hardscrabble Campground is a popular choice and that early reservations are essential for those wishing to stay there, especially during peak camping season and weekends.
Another important aspect to consider is the presence of nearby "free" or "unofficial" campsites. While these might appeal to some for their dispersed camping opportunities, they are also noted to potentially detract from the peaceful natural experience that many seek in a managed campground. The reviewer recounts a negative experience with "very loud hispanic music blasting until 2:30am" originating from one of these nearby areas. This highlights a potential trade-off: while Hardscrabble Campground itself may be clean and offer river access, its surroundings might be subject to noise and less regulated behavior. This is a significant point for those specifically looking to "get away and enjoy nature" in a tranquil setting.
Despite the potential for noise from nearby unofficial sites, the reviewer still acknowledges that "if you are looking to just get in the woods - this area is ideal." This suggests that the general location within the Boise National Forest offers the desired natural environment, characterized by trees and the proximity to the river. Additionally, the reviewer mentions a significant temperature difference, noting that it is "significantly cooler (~20 degrees)" compared to surrounding areas. This could be a major draw during hot summer months, offering a refreshing escape into the cooler forest environment.
The reviewer provides an overall rating of 7/10, indicating a generally positive experience tempered by the issue of noise from nearby unregulated camping. This balanced perspective is crucial for prospective campers to understand the potential benefits and drawbacks of choosing Hardscrabble Campground.

- **Essential Amenities:** The campground provides fresh water and restrooms.
- **Natural Setting:** The area is ideal for those looking to be in the woods and have access to a river.

Hardscrabble Campground Reviews
Clean campground with great river access at all perimeter sites. River is about 75 - 100ft wide and relatively shallow and flowing mildly through summer at about 24in. with many safe pockets and places for children to play in the water.
Sep 13, 2023 · Todd HubbardOnly 6 spots and they tend to be reserved fairly quickly. I have been able to go on a Thursday and get a spot, but on weekends - forget it.There is fresh water, restrooms, and access to the river. However, there are many 'free' / 'unoffical' campsites nearby that get rowdy. The last time we went, there was very loud hispanic music blasting until 2:30am. When you go somewhere to get away and enjoy nature, this is not ideal. But if you are looking to just get in the woods - this area is ideal. It is also significantly cooler (~20 degrees). 7/10
Jul 30, 2023 · Nathaniel H***No drinking water*** , fill up at Tie Creek campground, or elsewhere. 3.4 miles of dusty dirt road to get there. It is right on the Middle Fork Payette, with good birding, and a hotsprings nearby if the river is low enough to wade across.
Jul 02, 2019 · Bill HuntIt was closed but I wandered. Great location, just off the river. Good sized lots with gravel beds for tents as well. Decent spacing and wooded trails nearby
Nov 21, 2019 · Justin HolidayNice and clean campground. Each spot had it's open secrets to uncover. We found a nice little beach going through a small trail.
