Big Eddy Campground

Boise National Forest, ID-55, Cascade, ID 83611, USA

4.0
Beautiful beach area along the river with picinic table and grill a few feet away. Sitting there with your feet in the sand watching the river flow swiftly by carrying an occasional kyaker, you get lost. All the worries get swept up by the white waters and disappear. Don't be surprised if you have loatman hour or two when you return to reality. The surroundings are gorgeous, with colors so fresh and vivid. The greens of the trees and bushes stand out against the tan, red, grey, mand black sand, and it is all wrapped around the cool fresh blues in the river. It's a must see/feel stop! Not to mention when traveling highway 55, you are going to welcome every opportunity to pull off for a breath and to let the person behind you, that is so obviously in a big hurry, go around you! Don't worry though because there's a sherrif along there who will not turn his head to traffic violators, so chances are you will see that rushed follower again just up the road being given a lesson in following the rules of operating a motor vehicle. Its a beautiful drive along the river if someone else has the task of manuevering around the corners along the narrow highway. Which is why I give it 4 stars and not 5! - Tammy Blankenship

Big Eddy Campground Introduce

For local users seeking a picturesque "camping near me" experience, Big Eddy Campground, nestled within the Boise National Forest near Cascade, Idaho (address: ID-55, Cascade, ID 83611, USA), offers a unique riverside escape. Situated along Highway 55, this campground provides more than just a place to set up camp; it offers a chance to immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of Idaho and enjoy direct access to the river.

One of the standout features of Big Eddy Campground, as highlighted by multiple visitors, is its beautiful beach area located right along the river. Imagine having a picnic table and grill just a few feet from the sandy shore, allowing you to easily enjoy meals while taking in the soothing sights and sounds of the river flowing by. Guests describe the experience of sitting with their feet in the sand, watching kayakers glide along the swift current, as truly captivating. The tranquility of the setting seems to have a therapeutic effect, with one reviewer noting how worries can feel swept away by the river's flow, leading to a sense of peaceful detachment from everyday stresses.

The natural surroundings of Big Eddy Campground are consistently praised for their vibrant beauty. Reviewers describe the colors as "fresh and vivid," with the lush greens of the trees and bushes creating a striking contrast against the various hues of the sand – tan, red, grey, and black. This colorful landscape is beautifully complemented by the cool, fresh blues of the river, creating a visually stunning environment that is a "must see/feel stop" for anyone traveling through the area.

The campground's location along Highway 55 offers a practical benefit for travelers as well. The winding nature of the highway can sometimes make for a demanding drive, and Big Eddy Campground provides a welcome opportunity to pull over, take a breath of fresh air, and stretch your legs. It also allows faster drivers to pass safely. One reviewer humorously notes the potential for witnessing traffic violators further up the road, suggesting a degree of law enforcement presence in the area, which could be reassuring for safety.

Beyond the scenic beauty and convenient location, Big Eddy Campground itself offers specific features that enhance the camping experience. One visitor described it as a "great little spot with a cozy little beach." The presence of a "huge eddy" that is shallow enough to wade into the middle of the river is another significant attraction, offering a unique way to interact with the water and enjoy a refreshing experience. This eddy seems to be a popular spot for relaxation and observing the local wildlife, as one guest reported seeing a crawdad there.

The availability of a restroom facility is another practical aspect of the campground. One reviewer noted that the restroom was "right next door" to their spot and was "pretty clean and not smelly," which is always a welcome feature for campers. This indicates that efforts are made to maintain a basic level of hygiene for visitors.

Activities at Big Eddy Campground appear to be centered around enjoying the river. Swimming and fishing are explicitly mentioned as enjoyable pastimes. The direct access to the river and the presence of the eddy likely make these activities easily accessible and appealing to families and individuals alike. The combination of a beach area for relaxation and the river for more active pursuits creates a well-rounded outdoor experience.

While the overwhelming sentiment in the reviews is positive, there is a recurring point of concern regarding the campground management. One reviewer recounted an interaction where the manager approached their group, who had only three chairs and a cooler on the beach, and asked them to be mindful of making others feel welcome. While the reviewer stated they would have been happy to move and provide space if asked directly by other visitors, they felt the manager's approach was somewhat unwelcoming and involved unnecessary questioning about their vehicle parking. This experience led the reviewer to deduct a star from their otherwise perfect rating, highlighting a potential issue with the perceived level of intrusion by management.

Despite this concern, the same reviewer also expressed gratitude for the campground management's efforts in cleaning the grounds and restroom and keeping them in good shape. This suggests that while there might be areas for improvement in visitor interaction, the basic maintenance of the campground is appreciated.

For local users in the "camping near me" category, Big Eddy Campground presents a compelling option for a riverside retreat. The combination of a beautiful beach, accessible river for swimming and fishing, stunning natural scenery, and basic amenities like restrooms and picnic areas makes it an attractive destination. The easy access from Highway 55 also makes it a convenient stop for those traveling through the area or seeking a quick escape from nearby towns. However, potential visitors should be aware of the reported concerns regarding campground management interactions and the potential for feeling overly scrutinized.

Overall, Big Eddy Campground offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature along the scenic Payette River in Boise National Forest. The positive aspects, such as the beautiful beach, river access, and stunning surroundings, seem to outweigh the reported negative experiences with management for many visitors.
