Swinging Bridge Campground

ID-55, Cascade, ID 83611, USA

4.0
Lots of road noise, and the water had a lot of sediment. On the plus side, it's small, so very few neighbors; the host was helpful and friendly; outhouse was clean and smelled relatively decent; there was plenty of space at each site, and most had a lot of privacy (road noise not withstanding. Also, while the water had sediment, it tasted neutral, so it was drinkable w/o complaining. We brought man store-bought bottles and didn't break into the stash much. - Paul Loeffler

Swinging Bridge Campground offers a unique and memorable outdoor experience for local users seeking a refreshing escape into nature. Depending on the specific Swinging Bridge Campground location you are interested in (as there are a few with this name across different states), you can anticipate a range of environments and amenities. Let's delve into what makes Swinging Bridge Campground a potentially ideal choice for your next camping trip, keeping in mind that details can vary by location.

For those in the vicinity of Boise National Forest in Idaho, Swinging Bridge Campground presents an opportunity to camp alongside the scenic North Fork Payette River. This location, situated about 11 miles north of Banks, Idaho, at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet, is nestled in a picturesque canyon. The surrounding mountains are adorned with a blend of Ponderosa and lodgepole pine trees, offering ample shade during the warmer months. Summer days in this region typically range from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while nights tend to be cooler, creating a comfortable camping climate.

The Boise National Forest's Swinging Bridge Campground caters primarily to those seeking a more rustic camping experience. It generally features single-family campsites equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings. While specific amenities can vary, you can often expect access to vault-style restrooms. It's important to note that potable water may not be readily available at all locations, so campers should plan accordingly and bring their own water supply. Similarly, trash disposal might require a pack-it-out approach, emphasizing the need to leave no trace.

A significant feature of the Boise National Forest location is its proximity to the North Fork Payette River. This river is renowned for its whitewater rafting and kayaking opportunities, attracting adventure enthusiasts. For those who enjoy angling, the river offers good to excellent fishing for whitefish and rainbow trout. Additionally, sandy beaches across the highway provide a spot for leisurely water activities and family fun. Hiking trails are also available in the nearby areas, allowing campers to explore the natural beauty of the forest.

Keep in mind that due to its location near State Highway 55, some noise from passing traffic might be noticeable, particularly at night. However, many visitors still appreciate the convenience and the natural surroundings. Reservations for campsites at the Boise National Forest location can often be made through recreation.gov, and some sites might also be available on a first-come, first-served basis. It's advisable to check the current fee structure and any specific regulations before your visit, such as fire restrictions and pet policies.

Alternatively, if you are located near the San Rafael Swell in Utah, there are also campgrounds known as Swinging Bridge (North, South, and Equestrian). These campgrounds are situated near the historic San Rafael Swinging Bridge, Utah's oldest intact suspension bridge, built in 1937. The landscape here is characterized by rugged terrain, rocky formations, and sparse vegetation. Summer temperatures can be quite high, reaching into the 90s, while winter nights can drop into the 20s.

The San Rafael Swinging Bridge campgrounds offer a different camping experience. Swinging Bridge North typically features individual campsites and a large group site, each with tent pads, picnic tables, toilets, parking areas, and fire rings. Swinging Bridge South also provides campsites with similar amenities. The Equestrian Campground is uniquely equipped with green steel corrals at each of its six sites, catering specifically to campers with horses. While vault toilets are usually available, drinking water and trash removal services are generally not provided at these Utah locations, reinforcing the need for self-sufficiency.

The San Rafael Swell area offers a wealth of recreational activities. OHV trails are abundant, attracting off-road enthusiasts. Rock climbing and hiking opportunities are also popular, with diverse trails catering to various skill levels. Mountain biking is another excellent way to explore the unique landscapes of the Swell. The San Rafael River itself offers potential for swimming in certain areas, providing a refreshing respite from the desert heat.
