Heart O' the Hills Campground Introduce
For local residents and visitors to the Port Angeles area in Washington State seeking an exceptional camping experience nestled within the embrace of nature, Heart O' the Hills Campground stands out as a premier destination within the 'camping near me' category. Located at 2823 S Oak St, Port Angeles, WA 98362, this campground serves as a fantastic gateway to the breathtaking Olympic National Park, offering a blend of natural beauty, convenient amenities, and direct access to remarkable hiking trails. With its first-come, first-served site policy and popularity among outdoor enthusiasts, Heart O' the Hills provides an authentic and immersive camping experience in one of Washington's most treasured landscapes.
Immerse Yourself in Lush Woodland Environment: Heart O' the Hills Campground is beautifully situated within the lush, verdant woods that characterize the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. Campers can expect to be surrounded by towering trees, creating a sense of tranquility and immersion in nature. The spacious campsites are nestled amongst this beautiful foliage, offering a degree of privacy and a picturesque backdrop for your outdoor stay. The air is fresh and clean, filled with the sounds of nature, including the enchanting hoots of owls that can often be heard throughout the night. This serene environment provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing you to truly relax and reconnect with the natural world.
Convenient First-Come, First-Served Camping: Heart O' the Hills operates on a first-come, first-served basis, which can be both advantageous and something to plan for. Arriving earlier in the day, especially on weekdays or shoulder seasons, increases your chances of securing a desirable campsite. As noted by a visitor, even arriving on a Thursday evening provided a good selection of spots, but by Friday night, availability significantly decreased. This policy encourages spontaneity while also highlighting the campground's popularity, especially during peak seasons and weekends. Local users familiar with this system can leverage their flexibility to secure a prime location within the campground.
Appreciated Amenity: Flush Toilets: One of the notable and appreciated amenities at Heart O' the Hills Campground is the presence of flush toilets. This is a significant convenience for many campers who prefer this over vault toilets, offering a more comfortable and sanitary experience. The availability of flush toilets adds to the overall appeal of the campground, making it a more attractive option for families and those who appreciate a touch of added comfort during their outdoor adventure. However, it's important to note that during certain times, such as the period mentioned in a review, specific loops (like A-Loop) might have their bathroom facilities temporarily closed for renovation, so it's advisable to check for any current closures before your visit.
Direct Trailhead Access for Fantastic Hiking: A significant highlight of Heart O' the Hills Campground is its direct access to fantastic hiking trails. As one enthusiastic camper noted, a trailhead is located right within the campground, providing immediate opportunities for exploration and adventure into the surrounding Olympic National Park. This feature is particularly appealing to local hiking enthusiasts who can conveniently embark on scenic trails without the need for additional driving. The trails accessible from the campground likely offer a range of difficulty levels and stunning views of the park's diverse landscapes, making it an ideal base for day hikes and longer treks.
Unique Feature: Astronomy Presentations at Hurricane Ridge: While not directly within the campground, Heart O' the Hills offers a unique connection to the broader Olympic National Park experience through its mention of astronomy presentations held at Hurricane Ridge. This suggests that campers at Heart O' the Hills have the opportunity to participate in these educational and engaging events, which are likely organized by the park to showcase the area's dark night skies and celestial wonders. This adds an extra dimension to the camping experience, combining daytime exploration with nighttime learning and stargazing opportunities.
Important Considerations: No Showers and Potential Fire Bans: It's important for local users to be aware of certain limitations at Heart O' the Hills Campground. One notable drawback mentioned by a visitor is the absence of showers within the campground. Campers planning an extended stay or those who value daily showers will need to consider alternative options, such as using portable camping showers or seeking facilities outside the park. Additionally, fire bans may be in effect at certain times of the year due to dry conditions, as experienced by one reviewer. It's crucial to check the current fire restrictions before your trip to understand if campfires are permitted.
Beautiful and Clean Campground with Spacious Sites: Overall, Heart O' the Hills is described as a beautiful and clean campground, which contributes significantly to a positive camping experience. The spaciousness of some campsites is also a notable advantage, providing ample room for tents, vehicles, and outdoor living areas. This allows for a more comfortable and less crowded feel, enhancing the enjoyment of the natural surroundings. The cleanliness of the campground reflects good maintenance and encourages campers to help preserve the pristine environment.
Promotional Information and Local Appeal: While specific promotional offers are not mentioned in the reviews, the inherent appeal of Heart O' the Hills Campground lies in its prime location as an entry point to Olympic National Park, its beautiful environment, and its convenient amenities like flush toilets and direct trail access. For local residents of the Port Angeles area, its proximity makes it an ideal destination for weekend getaways and spontaneous camping trips. The first-come, first-served policy can be seen as an advantage for those with flexible schedules. The mention of astronomy presentations at nearby Hurricane Ridge adds a unique educational and recreational opportunity that enhances the local appeal for those interested in stargazing and learning about the cosmos.
Planning Your Visit: Local users planning a camping trip to Heart O' the Hills should be aware of the first-come, first-served policy and aim to arrive early, especially on weekends and during peak season, to secure a site. It's also advisable to check the Olympic National Park's official website for any current alerts, closures (such as the A-Loop bathrooms during renovation), and fire restrictions. Bringing appropriate gear for hiking and being prepared for the absence of showers will contribute to a more comfortable experience. Additionally, being mindful of Leave No Trace principles will help preserve the beauty of this exceptional campground for future visitors.
In conclusion, Heart O' the Hills Campground offers a fantastic 'camping near me' option for local residents of Port Angeles and a wonderful introduction to the wonders of Olympic National Park. Its beautiful woodland setting, convenient flush toilets, direct access to hiking trails, and proximity to unique experiences like astronomy presentations make it a highly desirable camping destination. While the lack of showers and potential fire bans are important considerations, the overall positive feedback regarding the campground's cleanliness, spacious sites, and natural charm underscores its appeal for a memorable outdoor adventure in the Pacific Northwest.

Heart O' the Hills Campground Reviews
This is a great campground. We rolled in on a Thursday evening, hoping we were there early enough to snag a spot, since it's all first-come, first-served. There were quite a few to pick from and we ended up with a great spot. By Friday night, there was only a few spots left. The good: flush toilets! We heard owls every night. Also, they have astronomy presentations up at Hurricane Ridge, which is cool. The bad: no showers and the bathrooms in A-Loop were closed for renovation. Also, the fire ban sucked.

Oct 13, 2024 · A SugarThis was by far the best campground I have ever stayed out. We came here after ditching Fairholme campground because it was too noisy. We showed up at 11am on a Friday and half of E loop was empty. We stay in site 91 which is nicely tucked at the end of the loop away from the road and other campsites. The site itself has excellent privacy from other sites around. The loop was 25%-50% and we felt like we were alone. It was so quiet we could sleep without the noise machine we needed at Hoh and Mora campgrounds. You really feel like you're in the trees. You are far from the restroom which is shared with C loop. Be aware that there were a ton of mosquitoes so bring bug spray or a candle.Another pro is you are 20 minutes from Hurricane Ridge and 25 minutes from Hurricane Hill. Right now the road to Hurricane Ridge is limiting the amount of cars up the top. However if you stay at the campground you get to go up ever after the road is closed to everyone else. You are also 15 minutes from Port Angeles if you run out of supplies.Honestly would recommend 100000%
Aug 29, 2023 · Charles FowlesNow Monday in late September, there are many sites available. All sites are first come first serve. It is in the middle of a dense forest area. Burn ban is not in effect here. This is a very enjoyable place. Most sites are small to park two cars. There are several pull through sites for RVs. The Heart's of Forest Trail is off the Loop E. It is 2.1 miles each way through a very nice forest and relatively flat. Dogs are allowed in campgrounds but not in the trails. Tmobile reception is good.
Sep 24, 2024 · Peter HahnThis is one of my favorite trails! The campsites are so beautiful! If you are near Port Angeles or headed up to Hurricane Ridge I would highly recommend you stop and do this Trail and also go camping. It is just right off the main road about 5 miles up the road. About 15 minutes from downtown Port Angeles. Like the posts before me have indicated it is a first come first serve and they do not take reservations.
