Hickory Lake Campground Introduce
For local users in Pennsylvania and surrounding areas searching for "camping near me," Hickory Lake Campground, located at 264 Laurel Hill Rd, Bangor, PA 18013, offers a unique camping experience that caters to both those seeking long-term stays and weekend adventurers, albeit with some distinctions. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground presents a blend of secluded natural beauty, community-oriented activities, and essential amenities, all at reasonable rates.
The environment of Hickory Lake Campground offers contrasting experiences depending on your camping style. The campground appears to be heavily oriented towards "seasonal" or long-term RV campers, with many RVs seemingly permanent and featuring "dilapidated decks." This suggests a well-established community of regular campers. However, for those interested in a more "primitive camping" experience, the tent sites are located at the "very back of the campsite" and are described as "secluded and lovely." One reviewer noted being the only tent campers during their stay, emphasizing the privacy and feeling of being in a more backcountry setting while still on a managed property. The presence of Hickory Lake itself is implied by the campground's name, although specific details about lake access or activities are not extensively mentioned in the provided reviews, aside from one reviewer enjoying swimming laps in the "nice big pool." The overall environment seems to offer a mix of a close-knit, long-term camping community and more isolated natural areas for tent campers seeking solitude.
In terms of services, Hickory Lake Campground provides a range of amenities, though their accessibility may vary depending on the type of camping. For tent campers situated in the secluded back area, a "spigot and portapotty" are available down a "long (rocky, not maintained) dirt road." However, the "actual bathrooms and showers are quite far from the tents." Despite the distance, the showers are noted as "private and had hot water," which is appreciated by reviewers. For RV campers, the availability of full hookups is implied by the presence of long-term RV sites. The campground also features a "nice big pool," which is a significant amenity enjoyed by both weekenders and seasonal campers. A "rec hall" serves as a central location for community events, such as bingo and a DJ with a dance party, fostering a "community atmosphere" and providing entertainment, especially for families. Firewood and ice are available for purchase at "very reasonable" prices, with staff even offering to deliver firewood to tent sites. Although the office may not always be staffed upon arrival, a "kind and accommodating" man is usually available, especially in the evenings, and the owner is responsive to email inquiries. Check-in procedures are flexible, particularly for late arrivals. A map of the grounds is provided upon check-in. The staff is described as "friendly," contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
The features of Hickory Lake Campground cater to a diverse range of camping preferences. For those seeking a more traditional campground experience with community interaction, the rec hall events and the friendly atmosphere among the regular campers are significant features. The "nice big pool" is a major draw for recreation and relaxation. Families with children will appreciate the community feel and the opportunity for kids to play together. The reasonable rates and the absence of hidden taxes or fees make it an economically attractive option. For those seeking a more secluded and "primitive" experience, the tent sites at the back of the property offer privacy and a sense of being in nature. The availability of hot showers, albeit at a distance for tent campers, is a notable comfort. The willingness of the staff to assist campers, such as delivering firewood, enhances the overall experience. However, a significant feature, and a point of caution, is the "long (rocky, not maintained) dirt road" leading to the tent sites, which reviewers strongly advise navigating carefully, especially in smaller vehicles due to "jutting giant rocks." The contrast between the more developed RV section and the more rustic tent area is a defining feature of this campground.
Regarding promotional information, the reviews highlight the "very reasonable rates" of Hickory Lake Campground, which was a key factor in attracting at least one weekend camper. The absence of "hidden taxes or fees" adds to the transparency and affordability. The price of amenities within the campground, such as a "nice big bag of ice for only $1.50," is also noted as reasonable. While specific seasonal discounts or packages are not mentioned, the overall affordability appears to be a consistent draw. Local users interested in current rates and any potential promotions should contact Hickory Lake Campground directly at (570) 897-5811 or +1 570-897-5811. Inquiring about weekend specials, long-term stay discounts, or any off-season rates might also be beneficial. Checking if they have a website or social media presence could also provide additional information on pricing and promotions. The positive comments about the speedy email response from the owner ("thanks Mike") suggest that contacting them via email to inquire about rates and availability is also a viable option.
In conclusion, Hickory Lake Campground in Bangor, PA, offers a diverse camping experience for local users searching for "camping near me." It provides a unique blend of a welcoming, community-oriented atmosphere favored by long-term RV campers and secluded, more primitive tent sites for those seeking a quieter natural retreat. Amenities such as a pool and a rec hall with organized events cater to a range of recreational needs. The campground is also noted for its reasonable rates and friendly staff. However, potential tent campers should be aware of the challenging dirt road leading to their sites and the distance to the main bathroom and shower facilities. For the most up-to-date information on rates and any promotional offers, contacting Hickory Lake Campground directly is recommended.

Hickory Lake Campground Reviews
This location is definitely catered to long-term "seasonal" campers as opposed to weekend campers. If you are expecting the KOA type experience, you're going to be disappointed. Although there is a spigot and portapotty down a long (rocky, not maintained) dirt road from the tent sites, the actual bathrooms and showers are quite far from the tents. Most of the RVs look permanent with dilapidated decks. However, if you're interested in more primitive camping, the tent sites are secluded and lovely. They are at the very back of the campsite and we were the only tent campers there (so we couldn't see anyone). All the appeal of back country camping on a safe property and with some comforts like warm showers. You really do need to be careful driving down the dirt road to the tent sites though. I was expecting a typical smooth grated dirt road, but was not prepared for the jutting giant rocks smashing the bottom of my little sedan. The showers looked like they weren't cleaned often, but they were private and had hot water (which is more than can be said for some other camping locations). There was no one in the office when I arrived, but man working when I got there late in the evening was kind and accommodating. I had been told by phone the previous day that I could do check in at morning if no one was there when I arrived (I knew I'd be getting in late.) The man I did see (on my search for open tent sites) opened the office to check me in, and gave me a map of the grounds. He also brought the wood I purchased up to the tent site I picked for me.They have events in the rec hall for a community atmosphere if you're into that. Kids were running around together, which was nice to see.I prefer secluded camping, so I personally liked this campground.
Sep 12, 2023 · Jade MurphyThe 4.6 out of 5 star rating drew my attention initially - only 1 other nearby campground had such a high rating. Their very reasonable rates might've been what ultimately drew me in and why Hickory Lake Campground ended up being our destination for camping this past weekend. I also appreciated the speedy email response I got from the owner when I wrote late in the evening to inquire about availability of accommodations (thanks Mike). No hidden taxes or fees - just the rates they publish on their site. And their prices within the campground are very reasonable too (e.g. a nice big bag of ice is only $1.50). Friendly staff and a very fun crowd can be found in the rec hall each evening. On our 1st night they had bingo; the 2nd night there was a DJ and a dance party. Lots of fun for my 8-year old niece who was with us - she found lots of other kids to play with. Although we were just weekenders all the regular campers made us feel very much at home.I enjoyed swimming laps in their nice big pool. Very refreshing!All-in-all I give the place a thumbs-up. I'd definitely go back again. We were in my 2007 Northwood Nash 25 S travel trailer at campsite F 2. Thanks Hickory Lake!!
Aug 25, 2019 · A Vstaff is friendly and helpful with things to do in the areacamp sites are good and treedBUT the rest rooms need cleaning and upgrading ( one is closed ) No wifi No sewer hookup
Sep 06, 2024 · Debra MillarThis place caters to seasonal campers. The short term people are put in spots in an open area by the maintenance building that leaves its light on all night. The office was only open on Friday and Saturday - not during the week and there was no sign stating how to contact anyone if needed. Facilities are a bit run down. Driveway needs the holes patched. It was VERY rough going in and out of the place. I am also attaching a picture of what we picked up on our site in less than 20 minutes. So glad we did not pop a tire putting camper in place!!! Decent place for the seasonal folks - I would not go there if you are not seasonal!
Aug 09, 2020 · Shelly HellierThis is a seasonal place with, I’m sure nice people. But by no means is this an up to date campground for 2021. No Verizon data. And no provided internet service. Sites are close and tight. No dump station or full hookups.Ron the owner is super nice and gave us a space on short notice. Some challenges noted by other reviews about access, and the security gate.
