Holter Lake Campground - U.S. Bureau of Land Management Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" in Montana that offers access to beautiful lakes and rivers? Holter Lake Campground, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), located at 1380 Beartooth Rd, Wolf Creek, MT 59648, USA, could be a destination worth considering. Situated near both Holter Lake and the Missouri River, this campground provides a scenic backdrop for various outdoor activities. Let's delve into what you can expect based on recent feedback from campers.
For inquiries or reservations, you can contact the campground at (406) 235-4314 or their mobile number, +1 406-235-4314.
Environment and Location: Lakeside and Riverside Scenery
Holter Lake Campground benefits from its proximity to both Holter Lake and the Missouri River, offering diverse natural environments for visitors to enjoy. One reviewer described the "lake and campground" as "very nice," indicating an appealing setting. The lake itself is located in a "really beautiful valley with great views," which adds to the overall camping experience. Imagine waking up to the serene vistas of the Montana landscape.
Another camper noted that the campground is situated on the Missouri River and that "getting from the interstate to the campground takes about 20 minutes," suggesting it's accessible while still being somewhat removed from the highway noise. This blend of accessibility and natural seclusion can be quite desirable for those seeking a peaceful getaway.
Services and Site Variations: Be Aware of Parking Lot Sites
The reviews highlight some important distinctions between different campsites within Holter Lake Campground. One camper cautioned that "any site above 33 however is literally a single parking space in the parking lot." They expressed that this was not clear on the reservation page. These "parking lot sites" reportedly lack amenities such as a "picnic table or fire ring." The reviewer suggested that if people are to camp in these parking lot spaces, the fee should be lower than for sites with more space, grass, a table, and a fire ring.
This is a crucial piece of information for potential visitors. If you are booking a site above number 33, be prepared for a more basic setup without the typical camping amenities and potentially less space. It might be wise to inquire specifically about the nature of your reserved site when booking.
In contrast, another reviewer who stayed in a tent site mentioned that they were "on a flat lawn" and that the sites were "fairly big." This suggests that the tent-specific areas might offer more of the traditional camping experience with space to spread out. However, this reviewer also noted that the tent sites had less privacy due to the open lawn setting.
The availability of "vault toilets" is mentioned, and these were reported to be "clean," which is always a positive aspect of campground facilities.
Features and Activities: Primarily Fishing and Scenic Enjoyment
One of the main features of the area is the access to Holter Lake, which attracts "lots of people...for fishing." This indicates that if you enjoy angling, Holter Lake Campground could be a great base for your fishing trips. The proximity to the Missouri River also likely offers fishing opportunities, although this is not explicitly detailed in the reviews.
Beyond fishing, the "really beautiful valley with great views" suggests that the area is ideal for scenic enjoyment, photography, and simply relaxing by the water. Whether you prefer the still waters of the lake or the flowing river, the natural beauty of the surroundings seems to be a significant draw.
While not explicitly mentioned, being a BLM campground, there might be opportunities for hiking or exploring the adjacent public lands, depending on the specific location and regulations. It would be beneficial to inquire about nearby trails or recreational activities beyond water-based ones.
Potential Drawbacks: Parking Lot Sites and Limited Privacy
Based on the reviews, potential drawbacks to be aware of include:
- Parking Lot Camping (Sites > 33): Lack of space, grass, picnic table, and fire ring. Potentially not worth the same fee as other sites.
- Limited Privacy (Tent Sites): Being on a flat lawn might mean less separation between tent sites.
It's important to weigh these potential downsides against the positive aspects of the location and facilities.
Promotional Information (Based on Reviews):
Despite the concerns about the parking lot sites, there are positive takeaways that can be seen as promotional:
- Nice Lake and Campground: General positive sentiment about the overall environment.
- Beautiful Valley with Great Views: Highlights the scenic appeal of the location.
- Clean Vault Toilets: Indicates a basic but well-maintained amenity.
- Good for Fishing: Attracts anglers to both the lake and potentially the river.
- Accessible Location: Only a 20-minute drive from the interstate.
- Fairly Big Tent Sites (on a lawn): Offers ample space for tent campers, albeit with less privacy.
One reviewer stated, "I’d come back here," which is a strong endorsement of the overall experience, despite the noted drawbacks.
In Conclusion: A Scenic Campground with Varied Site Quality
For those in search of "camping near me" that offers access to the natural beauty of Holter Lake and the Missouri River, Holter Lake Campground - U.S. Bureau of Land Management provides an appealing option. The area is praised for its scenic valley and opportunities for fishing. However, it's crucial to be aware that the campsites vary significantly. Sites above number 33 are essentially parking spaces with fewer amenities, while the tent sites on the lawn offer space but limited privacy.
When making a reservation, it would be wise to inquire about the specific characteristics of your chosen site to ensure it meets your needs and expectations. If you are looking primarily for lake or river access and are prepared for the possibility of a less traditional campsite (if booking a higher-numbered site) or a more open tent area, Holter Lake Campground could be a great choice for your next outdoor adventure. Contact them at (406) 235-4314 or +1 406-235-4314 for more details and to make your booking.

Holter Lake Campground - U.S. Bureau of Land Management Reviews
The lake and campground are very nice. Please be aware that any site above 33 however is literally a single parking space in the parking lot. This could have been more clear on the reservation page. Luckily we didn't have people on both sides of us so we could take up 2 spaces. We would not have been able to get our slide out otherwise. Also, no picnic table or fire ring at the parking lot sites. If you are going to have people camp in a parking lot, then the fee needs to be less than those sites that have space, grass, a table and a fire ring.
Jul 06, 2024 · Amy LynnReally nice campsite on the Missouri River. Getting from the interstate to the campground takes about 20 minutes. The tent sites are on a flat lawn, so you don’t have that much privacy, but the sites are fairly big. Lots of people come to the lake for fishing, so there’s also a lot of activity in the morning. Vault toilets were clean. The lake is in a really beautiful valley with great views. I’d come back here.
