Hungry Gulch Campground

CA-155, Lake Isabella, CA 93240, USA

We stayed here since the site stated they had water, restroom, and a hikijg trail nearby across from the lake. Was not worth the $32 night fee. Got here around 430pm to check in, and the host said to just find a spot, and they'll come by and give us a tag... never happened.Quiet hours are from 10 pm to 6 am, and since the camp host was gone most of the 1st night (stated they were headed to a football game), there was a big family (over 40 people) there who partied until 2am. Loud music and fighting all night long. Camp host was nowhere to be found and showed up early in the morning and acted as if nothing was going on and continued to do nothing the whole weekend. Most of the time they were MIA and not camp hosting at all. There are 3 restrooms in total throughout the campsite. The main one by the front had 4 Porta pods out front, and the men were locked, but the ladies were open but gross and not worth the trip to use it. They provided a trashcan in the ladies' restroom, but people still felt the need to pile used tissue and tampons in the corner, and it just got bigger, as the weekend went along. Most of the campsites are on hills, so you really need to be creative on how you will be setting up your campsite. It's best to drive around and check them out before picking a camping spot for the weekend. Most are in the sun mid day, so be sure to bring a pop-up for shade. There's a nice hiking trail to an old mine and to Isabella peak to sit and look over at the lake for sunset. The loop is around 3 miles and no hard but steep in some spots. - Teresa J

Hungry Gulch Campground Introduce

For those seeking "Camping Near Me" in the scenic Kern River Valley of California, Hungry Gulch Campground presents itself as a notable option. Located at CA-155, Lake Isabella, CA 93240, USA, this developed campground within the Sequoia National Forest offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities, primarily catering to families and those interested in water sports and hiking near Lake Isabella. The phone numbers (760) 376-1815 and +1 760-376-1815 connect to the Kern River Ranger District, which manages the area and can provide the most current information regarding conditions and reservations.

Environment and Location

Hungry Gulch Campground is situated at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet, offering a significantly different climate than the higher Sierra Nevada peaks. It sits atop a hill overlooking Lake Isabella, providing many campsites with picturesque views of the lake and surrounding foothills. The environment is characterized by scattered trees, including pines, which can offer some shade, particularly during the hot summer months. The landscape features rolling terrain, and as one review notes, "Most of the campsites are on hills," which means campers "really need to be creative on how you will be setting up your campsite." This implies that some sites may require more effort to level tents or RVs.

The proximity to Lake Isabella is the campground's defining environmental feature. Lake Isabella is a large, man-made reservoir known for its recreational value. The campground's location on CA-155 provides relatively easy access from nearby towns like Lake Isabella, Wofford Heights, and Kernville, where visitors can find supplies, dining, and other services. The open season for Hungry Gulch Campground is typically from May to September, indicating it is primarily a warm-weather destination, though current conditions should always be verified.

Services and Features

Hungry Gulch Campground is a developed facility, offering a range of amenities designed to enhance the camping experience for families and individuals. It features 78 individual family campsites, with a maximum RV and trailer length of 30 feet. Key services and features include:

  • Campsite Amenities: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, providing essential setup for outdoor cooking and gathering. Some campsites may even offer electric hookups, which is a significant bonus for RV campers.
  • Water Access: The campground officially provides drinking water, which is a crucial amenity for campers.
  • Restrooms: Multiple restrooms are available throughout the campsite. However, recent reviews indicate varying conditions. One review mentions "3 restrooms in total," with "the main one by the front had 4 Porta pods out front," and notes issues with cleanliness and accessibility, stating "the men were locked, but the ladies were open but gross and not worth the trip to use it." This suggests that while facilities exist, their maintenance can be inconsistent. It is important to note that official sources state flush toilets and even showers are available, so experiences may vary or facilities might be undergoing changes. Campers should be prepared for rustic conditions despite the listed amenities.
  • Playground: A playground is available, making it a more family-friendly option for those with children.
  • RV Dump Station: Official information indicates the presence of an RV dump station, adding convenience for RV users.
  • Reservations: Hungry Gulch Campground is reservable through the National Recreation Reservation System (Recreation.gov) by calling 1-877-444-6777 or online, allowing campers to secure their spots in advance, especially during peak season. Fees are approximately $34 per night for a single unit, with an extra vehicle fee.

Customer feedback regarding the camp host's presence and enforcement of quiet hours suggests that oversight can be inconsistent. While "Quiet hours are from 10 pm to 6 am," the review indicates that adherence to these rules may not always be strictly enforced, potentially leading to disturbances. This highlights the importance of being adaptable and setting personal boundaries when camping.

Promotional Information and Recreational Opportunities

The primary promotional draw for Hungry Gulch Campground, particularly for those searching "Camping Near Me," is its direct access to Lake Isabella and the surrounding outdoor recreation. The campground offers a convenient base for exploring the diverse activities available in the Kern River Valley. The phone numbers provided are valuable resources for up-to-date information on the campground's status and any current alerts or warnings, especially given that a review mentioned the campground being "closed" at one point.

Key recreational opportunities accessible from Hungry Gulch Campground include:

  • Lake Activities: Lake Isabella is a hub for water sports. Visitors can enjoy swimming, waterskiing, windsurfing, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, and jet skiing. Boat rentals are available at nearby marinas like North Fork Marina and French Gulch Marina. The lake is known for fishing, with species such as trout, bass, and catfish.
  • Hiking: As mentioned in a customer review, there's a "nice hiking trail to an old mine and to Isabella peak to sit and look over at the lake for sunset." This loop is described as "around 3 miles and no hard but steep in some spots," offering accessible yet rewarding views. Other nearby trails are also available within the Sequoia National Forest.
  • Mountain Biking: The wider Lake Isabella and Kern River area offers world-class mountain biking trails for enthusiasts.
  • Disc Golf: A unique feature mentioned in a review is the "fun object disc golf course." While it "would be great to see baskets installed in the off season," it indicates an informal recreational activity available on-site.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The forest environment provides opportunities for spotting local wildlife, including deer and various bird species.

Promotional materials emphasize Hungry Gulch as a "popular camping location" with "scenic settings." While the pricing at $34 per night was deemed "not worth" the fee by one reviewer due to perceived lack of oversight and facility issues, the inherent value lies in its location and access to Lake Isabella's extensive recreational offerings. Visitors are encouraged to prepare for potential heat with shade structures, especially as many sites are "in the sun mid-day." Understanding that this campground, while developed, can experience varying levels of maintenance and host presence, allows campers to set appropriate expectations for their stay.

In conclusion, Hungry Gulch Campground offers a convenient and accessible "Camping Near Me" option for those looking to enjoy Lake Isabella and the surrounding Kern River Valley. Its family-friendly amenities, combined with direct access to water recreation and hiking, make it an attractive base for outdoor adventures, provided visitors are prepared for a rustic experience and potential inconsistencies in campsite management.
