Old Isabella Introduce
Old Isabella Campground, located at Lake Isabella, CA 93240, USA, offers a distinctive camping experience for those searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Southern Sierra Nevada region. This campground is renowned for its primitive, boondocking-style camping, catering to adventurers who appreciate a more rugged and self-sufficient outdoor escape. While it doesn't boast extensive amenities typical of full-service RV parks, its prime location on the southern end of Lake Isabella, off Highway 178, provides unparalleled access to water-based activities and the natural beauty of the area. The primary contact number for inquiries is (559) 784-1500, or +1 559-784-1500.
The environment at Old Isabella Campground is characterized by its open, lakeside setting. A key aspect of the campground, as highlighted by user reviews, is the lack of shade trees. This means campers should be prepared for direct sun exposure, especially during the warmer months. Despite this, the direct proximity to Lake Isabella offers stunning views of the vast body of water and the surrounding low mountains of the Sierra Nevada range. The lake itself is a massive man-made reservoir, created by the Isabella Dam on the Kern River, providing a significant aquatic playground.
The campground offers "open camping," meaning campers can often find a spot that suits their preference, including the unique opportunity to drive vehicles to the shoreline and camp at the water's edge below the high-water mark. This allows for an immersive experience right by the lake, perfect for those who want to wake up to water views or have immediate access for launching non-motorized watercraft. The general area experiences hot summer temperatures, making water activities particularly appealing. The landscape around Lake Isabella is generally arid, but the presence of the lake itself creates a vibrant hub for recreational activities.
Old Isabella Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis for its campsites and is open year-round, offering flexibility for spontaneous trips. For campers utilizing recreational vehicles, a significant feature upon entry to the area is the availability of an RV dump station, though a fee of $20 is typically associated with its use. While it is a boondocking site, meaning no electrical or water hookups at individual sites, the campground does provide some essential facilities. These include vault toilets and trash service, which are crucial for maintaining cleanliness in this open camping environment. During the summer, portable toilets and additional trash receptacles are often provided below the high-water mark for convenience. A visitor information station is also available to assist campers.
For those planning to have campfires, barbeques, or use camp stoves, a campfire permit is required. These permits can be obtained from local Ranger Stations or online. The fees for camping are generally $12 per vehicle per day, with an additional $8 for each extra vehicle. Various interagency passes, such as the America the Beautiful Pass, are accepted here. It's important to note the camping limit of 14 days within any 30-day period, designed to ensure fair access for all visitors. While there is drinking water available at the campground, specific details about its location or accessibility might require direct inquiry.
The primary appeal of Old Isabella Campground, especially for those looking for "Camping Near Me" that offers extensive outdoor recreation, lies in its proximity to Lake Isabella and the Kern River. The lake is a hub for a wide array of water sports. A review mentions people enjoying their boats and jet skis, and indeed, Lake Isabella is popular for motorized boating, sailing, water skiing, and jet-skiing. It's also recognized as a prime windsurfing destination, with strong winds providing an exhilarating experience.
Fishing is a highly popular activity at Lake Isabella, with anglers able to catch trout, catfish, bass, bluegill, and crappie. The Kern River, which feeds into and flows out of Lake Isabella, is famous for whitewater rafting and kayaking, offering exciting adventures for those seeking more adrenaline-fueled experiences. One review explicitly describes enjoying fishing, prospecting, and watching rafters go by on the lower Kern River. Swimming is also a common activity, particularly on warmer days, as noted in a customer's comment about everyone being in the water on a Saturday.
Beyond water activities, the surrounding Sequoia National Forest offers extensive hiking opportunities. While Old Isabella Campground itself may not have shaded trails directly within its boundaries, the broader Lake Isabella area and the nearby national forest provide numerous options for land-based exploration, including scenic hikes and wildlife viewing. Birdwatchers can enjoy spotting various species, including bald eagles and osprey, especially around the Kern River Preserve.
For promotion, Old Isabella Campground can be highlighted as an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic, less-developed camping experience with direct access to a large recreational lake. Its "boondocking" nature appeals to self-sufficient campers, RVers without hookup needs, and those looking for a budget-friendly option compared to full-service campgrounds. The ease of access to the RV dump station adds to its convenience for RV travelers. The emphasis should be on the vast recreational opportunities available on Lake Isabella and the Kern River, including boating, fishing, jet skiing, and whitewater rafting, positioning it as a dynamic outdoor adventure base. The year-round operation and first-come, first-served system also make it appealing for spontaneous trips or for those who prefer not to make reservations far in advance. Despite the lack of shade, the opportunity for waterside camping and the sheer scale of the recreational options make Old Isabella Campground a notable choice for those searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Lake Isabella area.

Old Isabella Reviews
There isn't any shade trees and it's boon docking. There is fill and dump as soon as you enter. We chose to boondock at the lower Kern River next to the water by a big tree. We fished, prospect and watch a bunch of rafters go by. Everyone was in the water swimming on Saturday.
May 16, 2022 · Debi CarlsonThis lake is very large, driving through the streets, it took us about 1 hour to finish driving through everything. There were people taking their boats and jet skis. It was nice that people arrived with food and meat to roast.
May 17, 2022 · Amo CAAlways my favorite place in the world to go. I have been camping here since I was 3 months old. 50 years later still go. My dad's been coming since the lake was created. Always wonderful memories.
