Hurd State Park River Camp Introduce
For local residents in Connecticut seeking "camping near me," Hurd State Park River Camp, located in East Hampton, CT 06424, offers a unique riverside camping experience within the beautiful setting of Hurd State Park. While a direct phone number for the River Camp specifically isn't provided in the information, you can likely reach the main Hurd State Park office through the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) for inquiries about reservations and specific details regarding the River Camp.
Hurd State Park itself is known for its scenic trails and picturesque views along the Connecticut River. For local users exploring "camping near me," the River Camp within Hurd State Park promises an environment deeply connected to the riverine landscape. The reviews highlight key aspects of this environment. One camper noted "easy access from the kayak," indicating a prime location for those who enjoy paddling and arriving at their campsite via the river. The presence of the river also suggests opportunities for enjoying the waterfront, potentially for fishing, observing wildlife, or simply relaxing by the water's edge.
The reviews also provide insights into the campsite itself. One camper mentioned "tons of room to put up multiple tents/shelters," suggesting that the sites are spacious and can accommodate larger groups or those desiring more separate sleeping or living areas. The inclusion of a "fire ring with cooking grill and picnic table on site" points to essential amenities for a comfortable camping experience, allowing for campfires, outdoor cooking, and convenient meal preparation. The presence of a "privy a few hundred feet away" indicates the availability of basic restroom facilities.
One practical consideration mentioned by a camper was the challenge of "foraging for firewood," noting that they "found a few green deadfalls and struggled at times to keep a fire going." This suggests that while natural resources might be present, bringing seasoned firewood or a camp saw to process any found wood could be beneficial for those planning to have campfires. This is valuable information for local users preparing for a camping trip to the River Camp.
Beyond the specific campsite amenities, the broader environment of Hurd State Park offers additional attractions. One reviewer who parked at the pavilion described discovering "so many different trails here that you can walk or bicycle." This indicates that local users searching for "camping near me" at Hurd State Park River Camp can also enjoy hiking and biking opportunities within the park. The reviewer followed an "all trails app" in a loop, suggesting well-established and potentially varied trail systems to explore the natural beauty of the area. They also noted "picnic benches and grills" along these trails, offering additional spots for enjoying the outdoors beyond the designated campsites.
The same reviewer also mentioned that "my dog did love checking out the river," suggesting that the River Camp and the surrounding park area might be pet-friendly, which is an important consideration for many local campers. However, it's always advisable to check the specific regulations of Hurd State Park regarding pets, such as leash requirements and any restricted areas.
While the reviews provide a good sense of the environment and some of the features, specific services typically found at campgrounds are not detailed. For local users considering Hurd State Park River Camp, it would be helpful to inquire about aspects such as water availability at the campsites (whether potable water is provided or if campers need to bring their own), trash disposal procedures, and any specific rules or regulations for the River Camp area. Given its designation as a "River Camp" within a state park, it might offer a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience compared to privately owned campgrounds with more extensive amenities.
Promotional information is not included in the provided reviews. State parks often have a fee structure for camping, and it's advisable for local users to check the Connecticut DEEP website or contact them directly to understand the current camping rates for Hurd State Park River Camp and any potential discounts for state residents or off-season camping. Information about reservation procedures is also crucial, especially given the positive reviews suggesting it's a "great camping spot" that might be popular, particularly during peak seasons.
In summary, for local residents in Connecticut looking for "camping near me," Hurd State Park River Camp offers a unique riverside camping experience with easy kayak access and ample space for tents. The presence of fire rings with grills and picnic tables at the campsites provides essential amenities. The surrounding Hurd State Park boasts numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as scenic river views. While foraging for firewood might be challenging, bringing your own is recommended. The area appears to be pet-friendly. To obtain specific details about services, fees, and reservations, local users should contact the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) or visit the Hurd State Park section of their website. Hurd State Park River Camp seems like a beautiful spot for a local camping getaway, especially for those who appreciate riverside settings and outdoor activities.

Hurd State Park River Camp Reviews
This is a great camping spot. Easy access from the kayak and tons of room to put up multiple tents/shelters. Fire ring with cooking grill and picnic table on site with a privy a few hundred feet away. Foraging for firewood was a little challenging. We found a few green deadfalls and struggled at times to keep a fire going. Bring a camp saw! All in all, a beautiful spot to camp and will come back.
