Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday Introduce
Looking for a conveniently located "camping near me" option in the Lawrence, Kansas area? The Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday, situated at 1473 U.S. Hwy 40, Lawrence, KS 66044, USA, offers a range of amenities and a friendly atmosphere for both short and extended stays. You can reach them at (785) 842-3877 or their mobile number, +1 785-842-3877, for reservations and inquiries. Based on recent customer feedback, this KOA campground provides a welcoming environment with easy access to local attractions, although potential guests should be aware of certain factors such as site size and train noise.
One of the most consistently praised aspects of the Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday is its exceptional customer service. One reviewer who stayed for an extended period of eight weeks highlighted that "Everyone who works at the campground as well as the owner is super friendly." They specifically mentioned their positive interactions with an employee named Calvin, describing him as "fantastic." This emphasis on friendly and helpful staff can significantly enhance the camping experience, making guests feel welcome and supported throughout their stay. The positive interactions with both employees and the owner suggest a well-managed campground that prioritizes guest satisfaction.
The location of the campground is another significant advantage, particularly for those interested in exploring the nearby city of Lawrence. Described as "conveniently located near Lawrence, a college town," the KOA offers easy access to a variety of urban amenities. The reviewer noted that Lawrence has "tons of shops and restaurants," providing campers with ample opportunities for dining, shopping, and entertainment just a short drive away. This blend of a camping experience with proximity to a vibrant town center can appeal to a wide range of travelers.
For those requiring essential services during their stay, the Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday offers on-site laundry facilities, which were described as "convenient" by one reviewer. This amenity is particularly valuable for longer stays, allowing guests to manage their laundry needs without having to leave the campground. Additionally, the campground facilitates propane delivery or refills, a significant benefit for RVers, especially those camping during colder months or requiring propane for cooking and heating. The reviewer specifically mentioned this as a reason for their stay, noting that it was "easy to get propane delivered or refilled" even for "first round of snow camping."
However, the reviews also point out a few potential downsides that local users should consider. One inconvenience mentioned was the operation of the laundry machines, which "require quarters." While change is available at the office for cash-paying customers, there is "no way to get cash on the premises," and the nearest ATM is located "2 miles away." This could pose a minor logistical challenge for guests who prefer to use cards or who run out of cash during their stay.
Another amenity offered is free showers, which were appreciated by one reviewer. However, the design of the shower stalls was noted as a potential inconvenience. The doors "open inwards to the stall," which means there is limited space inside. As a result, "you literally can't have your bag in the stall with you and you have to step back into the shower to get out of the stall." This design quirk might be a minor annoyance for some users.
A significant environmental factor to be aware of is the proximity of a train line. One reviewer explicitly stated, "Yes. There is a train close by and it's loud and running all hours of the night." While this noise might be disruptive to some, the reviewer found a solution by using silicone ear plugs, which resulted in "zero issues." Local users sensitive to noise should consider this factor and perhaps come prepared with earplugs if they choose to stay at this campground.
In contrast to the positive experiences, another reviewer expressed dissatisfaction with the physical layout of the campground, particularly concerning site dimensions. They noted that "Sites are too short and too narrow," which posed a problem for their "41 foot 5th wheel." They further explained, "Our rv plus truck just barely fit in the space, and we couldn’t open our popups all the way)." This suggests that while the campground might accommodate some larger rigs, space can be limited, and it might not be ideal for all types of large recreational vehicles. Additionally, this reviewer mentioned that "Driving lanes are too narrow for longer rigs," potentially making navigation within the campground challenging for larger vehicles. They also observed that "Roads and site could use refreshed gravel" and noted the location as being "Close to I70, but in an industrial area," which might affect the overall aesthetic and noise levels (in addition to the train).
Despite these drawbacks, the reviewer who experienced the site limitations did appreciate being able to reserve via telephone, especially since "the park was pretty full on a Friday in March." This indicates that the campground can be popular, particularly during peak seasons or weekends, and making reservations is advisable. However, based on their experience with the site size and location, this particular reviewer stated, "Would not choose this park again," highlighting the importance of considering these factors based on individual needs and preferences.
Considering the platform category "camping near me," the Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday offers a mix of positive attributes and potential drawbacks for local users. The friendly service and convenient location near Lawrence are significant advantages. The availability of on-site laundry and propane services adds to the convenience, especially for longer stays and RVers. However, potential guests should be aware of the train noise, the need for cash for laundry, the shower stall design, and the potential limitations of site size and the industrial surroundings.
To provide a comprehensive overview for local users, the key aspects of the Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday include:
- Super friendly and helpful staff, including the owner and employees like Calvin.
- Convenient location with easy access to the shops and restaurants of Lawrence, a college town.
- On-site laundry facilities (coin-operated, requiring quarters).
- Availability of propane delivery or refills.
- Free showers with a potentially inconvenient inward-opening door design.
- Proximity to a loud train line operating at all hours (earplugs recommended for noise-sensitive individuals).
- Potentially short and narrow campsites, which may be challenging for larger RVs (over 40 feet).
- Narrow driving lanes that could be difficult for maneuvering longer rigs.
- Roads and sites that could benefit from refreshed gravel.
- Location close to I-70 and in an industrial area, which might impact the aesthetic and ambient noise.
- Telephone reservations are accepted and recommended, especially during busy periods.
Local users searching for "camping near me" in Lawrence should weigh these factors based on their specific needs and preferences. If friendly service and proximity to Lawrence are high priorities, and potential noise and site limitations are manageable, the Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday could be a suitable option. However, those with very large RVs or a strong sensitivity to train noise might want to explore other campgrounds in the area. Kansas City West / Lawrence KOA Holiday Reviews
My husband and I just finished an 8 week stay here. Everyone who works at the campground as well as the owner is super friendly. We dealt with Calvin a lot and he was fantastic. The location is conveniently located near Lawrence, a college town, which has tons of shops and restaurants. Laundry on site was convenient. It is more expensive but we stayed there because it was easy to get propane delivered or refilled for our first round of snow camping. The only downsides would be that the laundry machines require quarters, which you can get at the office if you have cash, but there's no way to get cash on the premises. And the closest ATM is 2 miles away. I also loved that they had free showers available but the doors open inwards to the stall so you literally can't have your bag in the stall with you and you have to step back into the shower to get out of the stall.Yes. There is a train close by and it's loud and running all hours of the night. I bought silicone ear plugs and had zero issues.Overall we enjoyed our stay, thought the employees and managers were great, and loved the location.

Mar 21, 2025 · jc EganThis place is full of gravel, mud, uneven sites, and tiny patches of grass here and there. The sites are quite small and your slide may be only feet away from the camper next to you. We expected better for the price!! If you need a place off the interstate to sleep for the night, the WiFi works well, and the water pressure is good. But I can't see anyone choosing this place for a camping outing. Oh, and wash your hands well after putting your water and electric away, the ground may be covered with feces you think is mud.
Apr 04, 2025 · Robin TimmThe staff work really hard to maintain the site. BUT trains almost pass by every 30 minutes, and you can constantly hear the sound of cars on the highway. You'll understand why they provide free earplugs. It's also a bit disappointing that the sites are placed so close together.
May 03, 2025 · JAY HWANGI recently stayed at a KOA cabin, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience! From the moment I arrived, the staff went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. The cabin was spotless, cozy, and perfectly equipped for a comfortable stay. It had everything I needed, from clean bedding to basic kitchen supplies, making it feel like a true home away from home. The surrounding area was beautiful, with plenty of amenities like a pool, playground, and walking trails. It was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure, and I especially enjoyed the evening campfire activities.I also appreciated how quiet and peaceful the campgrounds were at night, allowing me to fully unwind after a day of exploring. KOA's attention to detail and commitment to providing a great guest experience really shone through.I can’t wait to come back for another visit and would highly recommend this location to anyone looking for a fun, clean, and hassle-free getaway!
