Situated in a remote and stunningly beautiful part of Glacier National Park, this campground offers an immersive encounter with nature, characterized by breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife.
Located at West Glacier, MT 59936, USA, Lake Ellen Wilson Campground is not your typical front-country campsite. Accessing it often involves a hike, as suggested by one reviewer's description of it being an "impressive backcountry campground." This inherent remoteness contributes significantly to its unique appeal, offering a sense of solidarity and deep connection with the wilderness that is often sought by experienced outdoor enthusiasts.
The environment surrounding Lake Ellen Wilson Campground is frequently described in superlative terms. One visitor hailed it as "the best in the park!" in terms of its solitary feel and epic scenery. The campground itself is nestled at and around the pristine Lake Ellen Wilson, offering spectacular views of the crisp, beautiful water and the surrounding mountainous terrain. The natural beauty alone makes the journey worthwhile, promising a visual feast for those who venture there.
A significant feature of this backcountry location is the prevalence of wildlife. Be prepared for encounters with marmots, mountain goats, elk, deer, and even bears, as these animals are likely to frequent the area, especially attracted by the scents on hikers' gear. One reviewer humorously noted that these creatures "will likely come by your tent at night as you will be sweaty with salt soaked gear." This highlights the importance of proper food storage and wildlife awareness while camping here. The same reviewer also mentioned seeing a moose at nearby Gunsight Lake and Mirror Pond, further emphasizing the rich biodiversity of the region.
Despite its backcountry nature, the campsites at Lake Ellen Wilson Campground were noted to be "surprisingly level," which adds to the comfort of setting up camp. However, potential visitors should be aware that "bugs are extremely bad here," suggesting the need for effective insect repellent during certain times of the year.
The campground also boasts some unique and appreciated features. One reviewer particularly enjoyed "the huge rock at the cook area," which likely serves as a communal space for meal preparation and socializing. Additionally, the presence of "streams with big flow to filter water at camp" is a significant advantage for backcountry camping, providing a reliable water source. The advice to "try n keep all your gear inside because there are so many animals in the area" underscores the need to be mindful of the local fauna.
Adding a touch of rustic charm, one reviewer found the "pit toliet" to be "so cool and in a funny spot its literally outside in the woods." This candid observation gives a glimpse into the more primitive but perhaps uniquely situated facilities typical of a backcountry campground.
Another visitor described the campsite as "phenomenal!" and specifically praised the "awesome eating area," the "spectacular views," and the "crisp, beautiful lake." The sighting of "local mountain goats!" further adds to the allure of this location, promising memorable wildlife encounters.
While specific services and amenities might be limited due to its backcountry nature, the primary offerings of Lake Ellen Wilson Campground are its unparalleled natural environment, the opportunity for wildlife viewing, and a more secluded camping experience. Those seeking a break from more developed campgrounds will find solace and adventure here.
