Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday Introduce
For local adventurers seeking "camping near me" in the stunning Adirondack region, the Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday, located at 5591 NY-86, Wilmington, NY 12997, USA, offers a camping destination with proximity to two major attractions: Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain. As part of the well-known KOA (Kampgrounds of America) network, this campground typically aims to provide a range of amenities and services for a comfortable and enjoyable outdoor experience. However, recent customer reviews present a mixed picture, which local users should carefully consider when planning their camping trip.
Environment:
Situated in Wilmington, NY, the Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday benefits from its location within the Adirondack Park, a vast and beautiful protected area known for its mountains, forests, lakes, and rivers. Campers can likely expect to be surrounded by the natural beauty of the Adirondacks, with opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the fresh mountain air. The proximity to Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain suggests easy access to these iconic destinations for sightseeing, recreation, and potential outdoor activities such as boating, swimming, and skiing (depending on the season).
One positive review mentions the enjoyment of "fresh mountain air," indicating that the environment offers the natural appeal typical of the Adirondack region. However, a contrasting review points out potential challenges for larger RVs, noting "narrow, rough" roads within the campground and "adjacent trees that scratch the side of your expensive motorhome." This suggests that while the natural setting might be appealing, the internal infrastructure of the campground could pose difficulties for big rigs. The same review also mentions "too many trees for satellite" reception, which might be a consideration for campers who rely on satellite TV or internet.
Furthermore, one reviewer expressed concern about a substance "bleeding into the road out of what appeared to be a leaching field," raising potential environmental or sanitation worries. This is a serious concern that prospective campers should be aware of and perhaps inquire about with the campground management.
Services and Features:
Information regarding the services and features of Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday is somewhat contradictory based on the provided reviews. One positive review from a returning visitor mentions that their "site was so clean, washrooms and showers well maintained and always clean during our stay." This suggests that at least some of the essential facilities are well-kept.
However, a more critical review highlights several missing amenities that are often expected at KOA campgrounds or campgrounds in general. This reviewer states that there is "no pool and no cable tv, no local stations." They also mention that despite advertising "kayak rentals and access to the river," these were not available at the time of their inquiry. The lack of a pool might be a significant drawback for families camping during warmer months. The issues with TV reception (both cable and satellite) could also impact the enjoyment of some campers.
The negative review also mentions limited activities, describing "an ATV towing around some barrel carts for little kids and low rent DJ" as the only offerings. This suggests that the campground might not provide a wide range of organized activities for guests of all ages.
On a positive note, the returning visitor praised the "friendly and helpful" staff. This aspect of customer service can significantly enhance the camping experience.
It's important for local users to be aware of these conflicting reports regarding amenities and services. It would be prudent to contact the campground directly to inquire about the current availability of specific amenities, such as kayak rentals, and to get clarification on the condition of the roads and any recent improvements or renovations.
Customer Experiences and Reviews:
The provided customer reviews offer starkly different perspectives on the Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday. One reviewer, apparently a returning guest under new ownership, was highly critical of the changes. They specifically mentioned the campground not being "big rig friendly," the poor road conditions, the lack of expected amenities (pool, cable TV, reliable satellite), the unavailability of advertised kayak rentals, and a perceived lack of significant renovations despite a reported closure for that purpose. They also noted a substantial increase in nightly rates, deeming the campground overpriced for what it currently offers. The concern about a potential sewage leak is also a serious point raised in this review.
In contrast, another reviewer, also a returning guest, reported an "amazing time" with a "so clean" site and "washrooms and showers well maintained and always clean." They praised the "friendly and helpful" staff and the family-friendly atmosphere, recommending the campground due to its proximity to local attractions. This positive review suggests that some campers are still having a good experience at this KOA.
The significant disparity between these two reviews indicates that the experience at Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday might be inconsistent or that different campers have varying priorities and expectations. Local users should weigh these contrasting opinions and consider their own needs and the type of camping experience they are seeking.
Promotional Information:
The provided information does not include any specific promotional offers or discounts for Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday. Typically, KOA campgrounds might offer various promotions throughout the year, such as discounts for KOA Rewards members, seasonal specials, or packages that include local attractions. To learn about any current promotions, local users should visit the official KOA website or contact the Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday directly via phone at (518) 946-7878 or +1 518-946-7878.
The KOA brand itself can be seen as a form of promotion, as it often implies a certain standard of amenities and services. However, the negative review suggests that this particular location might not currently be meeting those expectations in all areas. The positive review, on the other hand, supports the idea of a pleasant family-friendly experience with clean facilities.
Local users might also want to inquire about any long-term stay discounts or special rates for residents of the region, if applicable.
Conclusion:
Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday offers a camping option in a prime location near two major Adirondack attractions. While one returning visitor reported a positive experience with clean facilities and friendly staff, another recent review raised significant concerns about the campground's suitability for large RVs, the condition of internal roads, the lack of certain amenities (pool, cable TV, reliable satellite, kayak rentals), limited activities, a substantial price increase, and a potential sanitation issue. This mixed feedback necessitates careful consideration by local users searching for "camping near me."
Prospective campers, especially those with larger RVs or those who prioritize specific amenities like a pool or reliable TV reception, should contact the campground directly to address the concerns raised in the negative review and to inquire about the current status of amenities and any recent improvements. The positive review suggests that some campers are still enjoying their stay, particularly those who value cleanliness and a family-friendly atmosphere. Ultimately, local users will need to weigh the potential benefits of the location against the reported drawbacks and make an informed decision based on their individual needs and expectations for an Adirondack camping experience.

Lake Placid / Whiteface Mtn. KOA Holiday Reviews
This was a great place before the recent new ownership. It is not big rig friendly by any means. The roads are narrow, rough and have adjacent trees that scratch the side of your expensive motorhome. There is no pool and no cable tv, no local stations and too many trees for satellite. They advertise kayak rentals and access to the river but when we inquired about where to get the kayaks, they said they currently were not able to rent any. Supposedly they were not open last year due to renovation work but little renovation was apparent. Perhaps the work consisted of buried infrastructure that we can't see. This time there appeared to be something bleeding into the road out of what appeared to be a leaching field. I hope it wasn't sewage. When we stayed here two years ago we paid $70.00/night and this time it was $105.00 and $120.00/night. This campground isn't worth more than $60.00 per night. They offer no activities except for an ATV towing around some barrel carts for little kids and low rent DJ. We love the area and unfortunately there are no other campgrounds open in the area so we will probably have to stay at this place again if we want to come back. If the owners think they are making improvements and they have a first class facility, they better think again. Just my opinion.
Aug 19, 2024 · Charles MercierThis was our second year at this Koa and we had an amazing time. Site was so clean, washrooms and showers well maintained and always clean during our stay. The staff were friendly and helpful and our family had the best time enjoying all the fresh mountain air. There’s so much to do close by, highly recommend. Quite campgrounds & very much family friendly.
Aug 10, 2024 · Melissa WillsonWe were a little sad to find out they moved but we found the new location very nice, although the road heading to the sites is a little tight I had no problem with my large travel trailer, I did have to pay attention but was by no means impossible. The new section has wide roads and easy to drive in pull thru sites. Although we had some rain one day we were able to stream 2 TVs with the wifi without any problems and the general store was small but had an awesome selection. We cannot wait to go back!!
Sep 08, 2024 · kyle walshMy family stayed in one of the many Deluxe Cabins for 3 nights. The cabin was beautiful and well appointed. Every thing you could possibly need was provided. The unit was clean, fresh and comfortable! There were a few reviews that mentioned a pet odor, so we expected that going in. However, we did not experience any of that. The cabin was cleaner than most hotel rooms we've stayed in! Extra linens for every bed, fully stocked kitchen, plenty of clean towels and washcloths (special ones for makeup), 2 air-conditioners, powerful ceiling fans, 2 smart tvs, amazing WiFi, and so much more. No detail was overlooked and we really appreciated every one of them. We were so pleased and content with our stay that we decided that KOA campgrounds were the way to go from here on out.
Jul 03, 2024 · Ashley GWe don't camp anymore but this was our favorite KOA campground. It was about a 5 hr drive from our home in Oshawa area. Camp sites we a good size and lots of trees around. The owner are great, they offer pancakes and more in the upper main building different days.
