Wilmington Notch Campground Introduce
For local users and outdoor enthusiasts searching within the "camping near me" category for an authentic Adirondack experience, Wilmington Notch Campground, located at 4953 NY-86 Scenic, Wilmington, NY 12997, USA, offers a charming and well-situated basecamp. You can reach them at (518) 946-7172 or +1 518-946-7172 for inquiries and reservations. While some reviews note the campground's smaller size and lack of power at the sites, the overall sentiment highlights its friendly staff, clean facilities, and prime location near some of the Adirondacks' most stunning natural attractions.
The environment surrounding Wilmington Notch Campground is undeniably one of its greatest assets. Situated in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, the campground offers immediate access to breathtaking scenery and numerous outdoor activities. Its proximity to "Whiteface Mountain, High Falls Gorge and Adirondack Chocolates" makes it an "ideal location for hiking and sightseeing in the Adirondack Mountains," as one reviewer aptly points out. Whiteface Mountain is renowned for its stunning panoramic views, hiking trails, and the opportunity to drive or take a gondola to its summit. High Falls Gorge offers a spectacular walk along well-maintained boardwalks over four impressive waterfalls. The inclusion of Adirondack Chocolates suggests that even those with a sweet tooth will find something to enjoy nearby.
The campground itself is described as "small" with a mix of "shady sites and partial shade sites." While one review mentions that the sites are "close-together," another notes that "some sites are quite spacious," indicating a potential variation in site size. The abundance of shade is a definite plus for campers, especially during the warmer months, providing a cool and comfortable environment. Despite the lack of power at the sites, the availability of "good water pressure at well placed faucets" ensures access to a basic necessity. The positive feedback regarding the cleanliness and maintenance of the campground, with specific mention of "clean and well maintained" facilities and "firepits cleaned out," underscores the management's commitment to providing a pleasant camping experience.
One of the standout features of Wilmington Notch Campground is the presence of a "steep hiking trail down through pines to gorgeous waterfall." This on-site natural attraction provides campers with a unique opportunity for exploration and the reward of a beautiful cascade. The fact that the trail leads directly from the campground adds to its convenience and appeal for nature lovers. The description of the waterfall as "gorgeous" suggests a worthwhile and visually stunning destination within easy reach of the campsites.
The services at Wilmington Notch Campground are characterized by the friendly and helpful nature of the staff. One reviewer recounts an instance where "the staff was friendly and helpful" in assisting a fellow camper with a battery jump. Another praises the staff as "friendly, helpful, and keep a close watch on the area," indicating a proactive approach to guest well-being and campground security. The presence of "sturdy picnic table" at each site adds to the convenience and comfort for campers, providing a dedicated space for meals and outdoor activities.
While the absence of power at the campsites might be a drawback for some, particularly those relying heavily on electrical appliances, it also contributes to a more rustic and traditional camping experience. This might appeal to tent campers and those with RVs equipped with sufficient battery power or generators (though generator use might be restricted at certain times). The focus here appears to be more on enjoying the natural surroundings and the proximity to local attractions rather than providing full-service amenities.
The mention that "Saturday night was busy, but quiet at 10pm" suggests that while the campground can be popular, there are measures in place to ensure a peaceful night's rest for all campers. This consideration for quiet hours is important for maintaining a comfortable environment for everyone.
Given the information provided, there is no specific promotional material mentioned for Wilmington Notch Campground. However, its inherent appeal lies in its scenic location, access to key Adirondack attractions, the presence of a private waterfall trail, and the positive feedback regarding the friendly and helpful staff. For local users searching within the "camping near me" category who prioritize natural beauty, hiking opportunities, and a well-maintained (albeit smaller and without power) campground, Wilmington Notch Campground presents a compelling option. The positive reviews serve as a strong testament to the enjoyable experience offered despite the lack of power hookups.
To summarize, Wilmington Notch Campground offers a "comfortable gem of a park" in a prime location for exploring the Adirondacks. Its proximity to Whiteface Mountain and High Falls Gorge, coupled with its own beautiful waterfall trail, makes it an ideal choice for hikers and sightseers. While the campsites are described as small and without power, the friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities, and shady environment contribute to a positive camping experience. Local users seeking a well-located and well-maintained campground focused on natural beauty and outdoor activities will find Wilmington Notch Campground a worthwhile consideration for their next "camping near me" adventure.

Wilmington Notch Campground Reviews
Small, close-together sites with no power. Neighbor camper needed a battery jumped and the staff was friendly and helpful. Location near Whiteface Mountain, High Falls Gorge and Adirondack Chocolates make it an ideal location for hiking and sightseeing in the Adirondack Mountains.
Mar 28, 2025 · Paul ZimmermanSmall campground with shady sites and partial shade sites. Some sites are quite spacious. Good water pressure at well placed faucets. Clean and well maintained..firepits cleaned out. Each site has sturdy picnic table. Saturday night was busy, but quiet at 10pm. Staff are friendly, helpful, and keep a close watch on the area. Steep hiking trail down through pines to gorgeous waterfall. A comfortable gem of a park
Sep 23, 2024 · Amy GustavsonSo last year when we stayed I would have given 5 stars for the clean bathrooms, hot showers and quiet fellow campers. We noticed a definite change this year and not a good one. Restroom facilities were not very clean, there was no hot water unless you took a shower at like midnight or 4 in the afternoon. The campground was crowded and very loud early morning groups. I doubt we would come back. The price is good though and it's in a good location for hiking, fishing and kayaking.
Jun 29, 2024 · Nicole HMore like a truck stop for campers. What I mean is that the campground is quite small and its in front of a passing road. We got woken up by cars passing by on the busy road instead of birds. Quite annoying. Also, theres not a lot of space between your campsite and the next. In fact, what separates each camp site is 1 tree & 1 meter on each side. Its not intimate. It feels like a truck stop. We were also at the camp site close to the bathroom so we had the light in our faces & the dumpster in front of our fire camp. We left after day 1 and went to our favourite camp ground- Buck Pond.I gave 2 stars though because the staff is amazing & so friendly! It also has the cleanest bathrooms I’ve seen in NY campgrounds.
Jun 24, 2024 · Noémie SamsonA far away drive from NYC but this campground was so cute. It was small yet clean and cozy. No disturbances whatsoever. The bathrooms were clean and the sink station even had a sponge with soap (thankfully because we forgot ours) it was close to great hikes and even Lake Placid.
