Lake Powhatan Recreation Area & Campground Introduce
Are you a local user in North Carolina searching for "camping near me" within the beautiful Pisgah National Forest near Asheville? The Lake Powhatan Recreation Area & Campground, located at 75 Wesley Branch Rd, Asheville, NC 28806, USA, offers a promising option. Situated in the Bent Creek area, this campground provides a variety of camping experiences, from traditional RV and tent sites to unique glamping opportunities. Based on customer reviews, it's a popular destination with a friendly staff, though there are some considerations to be aware of. Let's delve into what Lake Powhatan Recreation Area & Campground has to offer for your next outdoor adventure.
Location and Environment:
Lake Powhatan Recreation Area & Campground is nestled in the Bent Creek area of Asheville, North Carolina, within the expansive Pisgah National Forest. This prime location offers campers access to the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, including lush forests, hiking trails, and, of course, Lake Powhatan itself. The environment is characterized by wooded areas, likely providing shade and a sense of immersion in nature. Being part of the Pisgah National Forest means that visitors can expect a rich biodiversity and opportunities for various outdoor activities beyond camping, such as hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the surrounding wilderness. For local users searching for "camping near me" with a desire to be surrounded by nature and have access to recreational activities within a national forest setting, Lake Powhatan is ideally situated.
The presence of a lake suggests opportunities for water-related activities, although the reviews don't explicitly detail them for the campground itself. However, a recreation area with a lake often implies possibilities for fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the waterfront. The Bent Creek area is also known for its extensive network of trails, making this campground a potentially excellent base for hikers and mountain bikers looking to explore the Pisgah National Forest.
Services and Amenities:
Customer reviews provide insights into the services and amenities available at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area & Campground. The campground accommodates both RVs and tents, with at least one loop specifically for RVs offering electric hookups. One reviewer mentioned successfully parking both a camper van and a Mini Winnie RV on a single RV campsite, indicating potentially spacious sites. However, it's noted that sites with electric and water hookups are popular and "go fast," so early reservations are recommended if these are needed.
A unique feature mentioned is the "glamping options on the Hard Times loop." These consist of "large canvas tent with a front porch and chairs," offering a more comfortable and perhaps luxurious camping experience without the need to bring your own tent or RV. While the interior of the glamping tents wasn't seen by the reviewer, the exterior description suggests a well-appointed setup.
The reviews also highlight the presence of "friendly and helpful" staff. However, one review recounted a negative experience regarding a fee to briefly visit family at a campsite to assess its suitability for an ADA/senior gathering, which raises a concern about visitor policies. It's worth noting that reservations are managed through recreation.gov, which is a standard platform for many federal recreation sites.
To summarize the mentioned amenities:
- RV campsites (some with electric and possibly water hookups)
- Tent campsites
- Glamping options (large canvas tents with porches and chairs)
- Friendly and helpful staff (according to one review)
It is reasonable to assume that standard campground amenities such as restrooms, potable water sources, and waste disposal are also available, although not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews. Local users considering "camping near me" here should check recreation.gov for a full list of site-specific amenities when making a reservation.
Features and Highlights:
The standout features of Lake Powhatan Recreation Area & Campground include its location within the scenic Pisgah National Forest, offering a natural and immersive camping experience. The availability of both traditional camping sites and glamping options caters to a wide range of preferences. The proximity to Asheville provides a balance of natural escape with access to urban amenities and attractions. The potential for lake activities and the gateway to the extensive trail system of the Bent Creek area are also significant highlights for outdoor enthusiasts.
The mention of a senior pass discount being applicable at this National Forest site via recreation.gov is a notable benefit for eligible campers. This makes it an even more attractive option for local seniors looking for affordable "camping near me."
However, potential visitors should be aware of the need to reserve early for sites with electric/water hookups and the reported issue regarding visitor fees, which might impact those planning to visit campers without staying overnight.
Promotional Information:
While there are no specific promotional offers mentioned in the reviews, the applicability of the senior pass for discounts on National Forest sites like Lake Powhatan acts as a form of promotional information for eligible individuals. To learn about current rates, availability, and any other promotions, local users should visit recreation.gov and search for Lake Powhatan Recreation Area & Campground.
When booking through recreation.gov, be sure to check for:
- Different types of campsites and their associated fees.

Lake Powhatan Recreation Area & Campground Reviews
This campground is located in the Bent Creek area of Asheville NC in the Pisgah National ForestWe had a friend visiting w/ her 3 dogs and we had our 2 dogs. Two campsites were reserved but we were able to park both our camper van and her Mini Winnie RV on the one loop RV campsite. On the extra site we parked the pickup for quick trips to town. She used the electric and we used our solar. If you need electric/ water you must reserve early since those sites go fast! There are also glamping options on the Hard Times loop. Although I didn’t see the interior, on the outside is a large canvas tent with a front porch and chairs.Reservations should be made throughrecreation.gov. If you have a senior pass for National Parks you can also get thediscount @ National forest sites like Lake Powhatan. The staff at this campground is friendly and helpful .
Sep 09, 2024 · Hiker ShirlWanted to charge 9 dollars for us to see if this would work for ADA/Senior family gathering. Some local family with others (me) outdoor freaks from out west seeing if this could work. Who knows, but 3 bucks per person just to come to your campsite for 5 minutes IF it and the facilities work for some of the family is insane. Yes, im use to national forest/BLM land and maybe this is a right coast thing. But it's really freaking bizarre on nationally owned land West of here. Granted could have hiked in to look at facilities as they connect, but my disabled Iraq war veteran spine was acting up that day and left my national disabled pass at home which other reviews say they don't honor here anyways. Is this this place contracted out? Like wtf. Strangest national forest experience I have had from WA state through upper Wisconsin. In the end, serious concerns if i came to visit my Mum and Sis at this camping site. I don't consider this Federal Land as it's run weird and has to be contracted out with improper over site as it's SO different from other national sites that use recreation.gov. going to see if any Army Corp of Engineer sites have anything close by. They generally are not ate up.
Apr 19, 2025 · Militant TriangleWe are full time traveling & this has been one of my fave campgrounds. Love the proximity to the trail system & to downtown Asheville. The attendants were all so friendly. Huge private sites in the Lake loop. Can’t wait to come back!
Mar 13, 2025 · Cristen MarshThis campground is fabulous. I wish I could give it 10 stars. We stayed in the Big John loop during October. The site was roomy and level, the bathrooms were always clean, and the management team is super nice and helpful. The location is a quick drive to downtown Asheville and just minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Lots of hiking and biking trails, a lovely little lake area, lots of wildlife and beautiful plants and fungi, quiet, peaceful…Literally the only challenge was a lack of cell service but in some spots we were able to get a great signal.
Nov 06, 2021 · Lacey ReichwaldThe campground looks nice, but I have not stayed there. The lake is great! It's small, with numerous spots along the shoreline for fishing. There is a recently rebuilt pier for more fishing. That's just before the dam. You can look over the dam from either side, and swim in the hole below it if you like. This is also another fishing spot. The creek and lake are both Hatchery Supported public waters, and thus have trout to go along with the standard mix. The far side of the lake has a beach that adjoins the limited swimming area. This is a great spot for a day trip, or an entire week/end if you have the time. And don't forget the miles of easily accessible hiking and mountain biking trails. And the forest roads for the gravel grinding set are a good ride.
