Leith Run Recreation Area & Campground - Wayne National Forest Introduce
Are you searching for a camping experience immersed in nature near Matamoras, Ohio? Consider Leith Run Recreation Area & Campground, situated within the expansive Wayne National Forest at 44400 OH-7, Matamoras, OH 45767, USA. This campground offers a picturesque location along the river and access to scenic hiking trails, making it an appealing option for those seeking "camping near me" with opportunities for outdoor recreation. However, it's important for local users to be aware of the reported limitations in facilities to ensure it meets their specific camping needs.
The environment of Leith Run Recreation Area & Campground is a significant draw, with reviewers highlighting its "nice location along the river." The proximity to the river offers campers the chance to enjoy waterfront views and potentially engage in activities such as fishing right from their campsite. The campground is also described as being within Wayne National Forest, indicating a setting surrounded by natural woodlands and potentially diverse wildlife. One reviewer mentioned being content to never leave the site, enjoying the river views just feet away, underscoring the tranquil and scenic environment. Furthermore, the campground provides trailhead access to a scenic overlook trail, described as an "amazing hike" where wildlife like snakes and a turtle were observed. This access to hiking within the national forest enhances the appeal for those who enjoy exploring nature on foot. The campground itself is characterized as "small and quiet," suggesting a more intimate and peaceful camping experience away from larger, more bustling campgrounds. However, another reviewer noted "minimal connectivity," which is typical for national forest locations and something to consider for those who rely on consistent internet or phone service.
In terms of services and facilities, reviews indicate a somewhat uneven distribution catering to different types of campers. For those camping in tents, the availability of two pit toilets and one flush toilet, along with a single shower, might be considered limited for a potentially "fairly large" campground. This is an important factor for tent campers to consider regarding convenience and potential wait times during peak seasons. For RV campers, the sites are reported to offer electric hookups only, with no water or sewer connections directly at the site. Additionally, the presence of a "minimal dump station" suggests that while RV waste disposal is available, it might not be as comprehensive or convenient as at campgrounds specifically designed for RVs. This lack of full hookups and a potentially basic dump station might be a limitation for RVers seeking more self-contained camping experiences. The availability of a shower is noted as a positive, with one reviewer describing it as "huge and clean," which is a significant comfort factor for all campers.
A notable feature of Leith Run Recreation Area & Campground is the presence of a friendly and helpful camper host, referred to as "camp mom." This host is described as accommodating and someone who enhances the camping experience through their helpfulness and friendly demeanor. However, it is mentioned that this particular host's current year is their last, so future campers may or may not have the same individual providing this service. The availability of a camper host generally contributes to a more organized and supported camping environment, providing a point of contact for questions and assistance.
While the reviews highlight the natural beauty and the friendly host, there is no mention of specific recreational amenities within the campground itself, such as playgrounds, organized activities, or communal gathering areas. The primary features seem to be the riverside location and the access to hiking trails within Wayne National Forest. For local users seeking a more rustic and nature-focused camping experience, these features might be sufficient. However, those looking for campgrounds with a wider range of on-site amenities might find Leith Run Recreation Area somewhat lacking.
Currently, there is no promotional information available in the provided reviews for Leith Run Recreation Area & Campground. As a campground within a National Forest, pricing is typically standardized and based on the type of site (e.g., electric only, non-electric). To inquire about current rates, seasonal discounts (if any), or any special permits or fees associated with camping in Wayne National Forest, it is recommended to contact the provided phone number: (740) 373-9055 or +1 740-373-9055. In conclusion, Leith Run Recreation Area & Campground in Wayne National Forest offers a promising "camping near me" option for local users seeking a scenic riverside location with access to hiking trails. The quiet and natural environment, coupled with a reportedly friendly camper host, are significant positives. However, it is crucial to note the limitations in facilities, with a potentially low ratio of toilets and showers for tent campers and electric-only sites with a minimal dump station for RVs. The lack of strong connectivity is also typical for a national forest setting. While the natural beauty and recreational opportunities are appealing, potential campers should assess whether the available facilities meet their needs. For the most up-to-date information on pricing, reservations, and any potential changes in services or amenities, contacting the campground directly at (740) 373-9055 or +1 740-373-9055 or checking the official Wayne National Forest resources is recommended.

Leith Run Recreation Area & Campground - Wayne National Forest Reviews
It was okay. Fairly large spots and nice location along the river. But somewhat lacking in facilities. If you were in tents, there were 2 pit toilets and one flush toilet (and one shower). If you were in an RV, it was electric only at site, no water or sewer. And a minimal dump station So somehow didn't cater to either? And being in a Nation Forest, minimal connectivity. Overall a site with promise that needs more investment.
Sep 26, 2022 · SeanThe camper host was exactly what one should be: accommodating, helpful and friendly, known as "camp mom." This is her last year there. The site is one that we would be content never leaving, watching the river only feet from our site, we could fish any time we wanted. The trail head to the scenic overlook trail was easy to get to and an amazing hike! Saw two snakes and a turtle in the 6 mile round trip hike.Camp itself was small and quiet. Shower was huge and clean. We will be back!
Oct 08, 2017 · Gr8 HandzWe were really surprised at this campground when we arrived. The campground is in excellent condition. Well maintained. It won't be for everyone because it is 30 amp electric only at RV sites. Water is available when you arrive to fill your freshwater tank. A dump station is available too. Showers are available but we preferred our own. Some sites are right on the Ohio river. Bring your honey wagon if staying for an extended time (max 14 days)
Jun 18, 2016 · David ColmanSmall campground right on Ohio River. Our site, 9, was paved and level making for an easy set up. Charcoal grills and campfire rings. Choice of pit toilets or modern amenities. Push button shower with no temp control. Nice views of river, saw and heard barges passing. Fair amount of road noise, mostly from across river. Short Nature trails and boardwalk to potential wildlife viewing. No beavers appeared for me. Access from campground to Scenic River and Green Wood mountain bike trails. Playground. Canoe launch.
Sep 03, 2021 · Betsy BondThis is a beautiful campground located right on the Ohio River. Unfortunately, it is managed by individuals who are not very accommodating. They were kind, but nibby and were not very receptive of our dogs. They were rude to the other group who were using primitive sites next to our camp. This seems like the kind of place if you roll in with a nice camper and appear to "belong" than you will be just fine. If you want to tent camp be prepared to be judged and spied on. The shower house only had 1 shower and 1 toilet and was well maintained. The views are great, and there is a nice playground, but I fear that children who are "too loud" or "too busy" will not be welcomed.
