Lion Rock Spring Campground Introduce
For local adventurers in Washington State seeking a "camping near me" experience that embraces natural beauty and a more self-sufficient approach, Lion Rock Spring Campground near Cle Elum offers an intriguing option. Located in Cle Elum, WA 98922, USA, this campground appears to be a less formally developed area, emphasizing dispersed camping within a beautiful setting. The reviews from fellow campers provide valuable insights into the environment, limited services, and unique features of Lion Rock Spring Campground, making it a noteworthy destination for those who appreciate a more rustic and independent outdoor experience.
The environment surrounding Lion Rock Spring Campground is consistently described as beautiful and worth the drive. One reviewer specifically highlights the springtime spectacle of hillsides covered in wildflowers, suggesting that this season offers a particularly stunning visual experience for campers. The terrain seems to transition from an old asphalt road to gravel about a mile before reaching the higher elevations, particularly when approaching from Ellensburg. This indicates that while accessible by vehicle, the final stretch might require consideration for certain types of vehicles, especially those with lower clearance. The overall impression is of a natural area with scenic beauty that rewards those who venture to it.
In terms of services, Lion Rock Spring Campground appears to offer very basic amenities, aligning with a more dispersed camping style. One confirmed service is the presence of a vault toilet located near the top, close to Lion Rock itself. This provides a rudimentary but essential facility for campers. However, one reviewer noted the absence of toilet paper in the pit toilets, emphasizing the need for campers to be fully self-sufficient in their personal supplies. Importantly, another reviewer who stayed overnight in mid-August reported that the spring was not flowing sufficiently to obtain drinking water, although some was used for rinsing dishes. This is a critical piece of information, indicating that access to a reliable water source cannot be guaranteed, especially later in the summer season. Therefore, campers must plan to bring all their own water or have a robust water purification system.
A significant feature of Lion Rock Spring Campground is the allowance for "camping just about anywhere." This strongly suggests a dispersed camping model, where designated campsites may be minimal or non-existent, and campers have the freedom to choose their own site within the general area, following Leave No Trace principles. This appeals to those who prefer a more secluded and less structured camping experience. However, one reviewer noted that their chosen campsite was "nice but deeply rutted," indicating that ground conditions can vary, and campers should be prepared to select their site carefully. The overarching principle emphasized by one reviewer is "Pack it in, Pack it out!" This is a crucial feature and expectation for dispersed camping areas, meaning campers are responsible for removing all their trash and leaving no trace of their visit to preserve the natural environment.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who are comfortable with a more primitive and self-reliant camping style, Lion Rock Spring Campground offers a beautiful natural area with the freedom of dispersed camping. The springtime wildflower displays are a significant draw, promising a visually stunning experience. However, potential visitors must be aware of the limited services, particularly the potentially unreliable water source later in the season, and the need to be fully prepared with all necessary supplies, including toilet paper and ample water or a purification method. The "Pack it in, Pack it out!" ethos is paramount for responsible camping here.
Given the nature of dispersed camping and the limited formal development, there is likely no specific promotional information available for Lion Rock Spring Campground in the traditional sense. The primary promotion is the natural beauty of the area, particularly the wildflowers in spring, and the opportunity for a more independent camping experience. The "worth the drive up" sentiment from a reviewer serves as an implicit recommendation for those seeking a scenic and less crowded camping option near Cle Elum.
In summary, Lion Rock Spring Campground near Cle Elum, WA, offers a beautiful natural environment for those seeking a dispersed "camping near me" experience. Its springtime wildflower displays are a notable feature, making it a potentially stunning destination during that season. However, campers must be prepared for very limited services, including a vault toilet (possibly without toilet paper) and a potentially unreliable water source, especially in late summer. The freedom to camp in various locations comes with the responsibility of adhering to the "Pack it in, Pack it out!" principle and being fully self-sufficient. This campground is best suited for experienced campers who appreciate natural beauty, solitude, and the independence of dispersed camping.

Feb 03, 2019 · Michael TillmanStopped overnight on motorcycle trip on the Washington backcountry discovery route. Nice pit toilets, no TP, campsite was nice but deeply rutted. Mid August spring was not flowing enough to be getting amy drinking water. Did use some for rinsing dishes.
Aug 14, 2023 · Duane BedardI’m here now. For being as far out in the wilderness as it is, I still seem to have intermittent cell service. The camping is un-maintained but the toilet is still serviced and kept very clean. The road is rough in places and a higher clearance vehicle is advisable but I’ve seen regular passenger vehicles here as well. Bring water. It is a bit windy now but not unbearable. There are lots of people here but camping is spread out. I agree with a previous review, this must have been some sort of campground in years gone by but the surrounding forest appears to have entirely succumbed to a fire about ten years ago so that may have prompted its abandonment. There are a lot of ATV’s so this may be the main attraction now.
Sep 01, 2020 · Alan GrayAwesome. Absolutely gorgeous with free primitive camping. There is a bathroom nearby that is serviced and has a real toilet (appears to be left over from a extinct campground. The views are worth it if you can stand the drive but bring a jacket. It's windy up there.
Oct 26, 2018 · Craig JohnsonPretty good spot for camping. No real facilities but is to be expected with free sites. Decent cell service up there too which was surprising.
