Madison / Pittsburgh S.E. KOA Journey Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the vicinity of Madison and Pittsburgh's southeast area? The Madison / Pittsburgh S.E. KOA Journey, located at 764 Waltz Ml Rd, Ruffs Dale, PA 15679, USA, offers a stop for travelers and a potential longer stay for those exploring the region. Based on the available customer reviews, this KOA Journey campground has both commendable aspects and areas where experiences varied. Let's delve into what local users can expect regarding its environment, services, and features.
Environment and Accessibility
One review mentions "rough roads and sharp turn off the main road," which is an important consideration for those driving larger RVs or towing trailers. Local users should be aware of this potential challenge when approaching the campground. However, once inside, the overall environment seems to be appreciated, with one long-term guest describing the surroundings as "quiet." This suggests that despite the initial access, the campground itself offers a peaceful setting, which can be a significant draw for those seeking a relaxing "camping near me" experience.
The campground's location in Ruffs Dale, Pennsylvania, places it within a region that offers a mix of rural landscapes and proximity to more urban areas like Pittsburgh. This could mean that while the immediate surroundings of the KOA are quiet, it's also conveniently located for exploring regional attractions. The term "Journey" in the KOA name often indicates a campground well-suited for overnight stops during travel, but also equipped for longer stays.
One reviewer noted difficulty in finding a "level site for a 40+ pull through" and had to unhook their vehicle even though the campground was "almost empty." This suggests that while pull-through sites are available, achieving a perfectly level setup for larger RVs might be challenging. Local users with larger rigs should perhaps inquire about site levelness when booking.
Services and Facilities
The reviews provide mixed feedback on the services and facilities. On the positive side, one reviewer "liked the showers / bathrooms," describing them as "clean." Cleanliness of restrooms and showers is often a high priority for campers, so this is a notable plus. However, this same reviewer pointed out that during their April visit, "they didn't have towels for drying our hands in the bathrooms," which is a minor inconvenience to be aware of.
Another aspect mentioned was the laundry facilities, which were described as being a "long way" from the reviewer's site but "efficient." This indicates that laundry is available, which is valuable for longer stays, but the location within the campground might not be ideal for everyone.
One significant issue reported was by a friend of a reviewer who "didn't have water pressure in her shower (handicap stall)." This suggests a potential inconsistency in the functionality of the facilities across different areas of the campground. Local users with specific needs, such as accessible showers, might want to inquire about the water pressure in those facilities.
Despite these issues, the staff's helpfulness stood out. When one guest's "air-conditioner cover flew off" their RV, the staff "helped us cover it." Alexis and her husband were specifically mentioned for their kindness, with the reviewer stating, "Their kindness is 10 stars!" This strong positive feedback about the staff's willingness to go "out of their way to help us" is a significant asset for the campground.
Another reviewer who stayed for a month while relocating across the country described the facilities as "good," further supporting the idea of generally adequate amenities, even if some specific aspects had issues for other guests.
Features and Atmosphere
One of the most consistently praised features seems to be the friendly and helpful staff, which creates a welcoming atmosphere. The quiet surroundings, as mentioned by a long-term guest, also contribute to a potentially relaxing stay.
As a KOA Journey campground, it likely offers a range of site types to accommodate different camping preferences, including RV sites (with varying hookups) and possibly tent sites. KOA campgrounds often have additional amenities like Wi-Fi, a camp store, and perhaps some recreational facilities, although these are not specifically mentioned in the provided reviews for this location.
The fact that one guest stayed for an extended period while looking for a house indicates that the campground is comfortable for longer stays and potentially caters to those needing a temporary base.
The willingness of the first reviewer to "try this place again" despite the noted inconveniences speaks to an overall positive impression, largely due to the kindness of the staff.
Promotional Aspects from Reviews
The reviews, while honest about some challenges, also highlight strong promotional points for local users seeking "camping near me":
- Extremely Kind and Helpful Staff: The exceptional service provided by Alexis and her husband is a major draw.
- Clean Bathrooms/Showers: A fundamental aspect of comfort that was appreciated.
- Quiet Surroundings: Offers a peaceful camping experience.
- Efficient Laundry Facilities: Useful for longer stays.
- Overall Positive Experience: Despite some issues, guests were inclined to return.
These positive comments can reassure local users that they are likely to be well-treated and find a generally pleasant environment at this KOA Journey campground.

Madison / Pittsburgh S.E. KOA Journey Reviews
Rough roads and sharp turn off the main road. I liked the showers / bathrooms, but when we were there (April), they didn't have towels for drying our hands in the bathrooms. They were clean, but our friend didn't have water pressure in her shower (handicap stall). We had to walk along way for laundry but it was efficient. Our air-conditioner cover flew off while we traveled, they helped us cover it. Alexis was very kind and her husband went out of his way to help us. Their kindness is 10 stars! It's hard to have a level site for a 40+ pull through, and we had to unhook even though the campground was almost empty. But again, they were nice and I'd try this place again.
May 03, 2025 · S7Wa GMoved My family of 5 and 4 pets cross-country from San Diego in a used RV. We stopped at a lot of places and stayed at a lot of "RV resorts" along the way and this was BY FAR the best one of all. Ended up staying for a month while we looked for a house. Friendly and helpful staff, good facilities and quiet surroundings.
Nov 14, 2024 · NexusOfCrisisBathrooms are not available. Local KOA team did not advise that their restrooms were not available prior to arrival. We booked the site weeks in advance. The kids wanted to leave shortly after arrival. Thankfully we were just passing through.
Mar 26, 2025 · Reformed TheologyIt was a cute little cabin that we stayed in. The previous KOA we were at had a much better mattress on the bed. It was very hard to sleep on this bed due to it feeling like we were just sleeping on the ground. AC barely kept the small cabin cool. My husband is very heat sensitive, so we specifically chose a cabin with AC so he wouldn't overheat. Restrooms are clean enough. I didn't use the shower, but my husband said the water was hot and it did the job just fine. We likely won't be back to this area at any time soon. If we are, we might stay at a different camp ground.
Jul 24, 2024 · Racheal PecchiaThe place was nice last year horrible this year. No bouncy pad, canoes are gone, sand box gone ,pool closes whenever they want to close it, store closes early when they feel like it. The management smoke in the pool area n drink even thou there's signs saying not to. Children 15 are supervising 10 year in the pool even thou it says adult supervision under 15. The 15 is not an adult our 17 was not permitted to watch her 6 year old sister in the pool. Rules seem to apply to only certain people. All the staff that has been there years quit or got fired. They talk about the staff that left. Definitely not friendly. You go in with a problem n are told if you have an attitude they aren't dealing with you. I was there 16 months I pulled my camper out n left a storage container I didn't have room in the camper for. I called to tell them I would be back for it only to find all my stuff thrown in the garbage. All the kids skate boards, scooter, helmets, basketball etc. Quiet time is at 10:00 but hear managers daughter n her friends talking loudly at 12:30. Pets are not allowed at other campers site unless you are the manager. They don't follow rules they make n if you break a rule you're out in 5 days no refund. The activity lady Casey who worked free quit, barely any activities now. Definitely not a good Koa should be renamed to Johns campground. Grass all high roads are terrible. Definitely running down Koa name. I've stayed at many n definitely different. I was told my camp site needed cleaned up when others have garbage, boats, toys n all kinds of junk.
