McKinley Park Campground Introduce
For local residents in and around Soudan, Minnesota, seeking "camping near me" with access to a beautiful lake, McKinley Park Campground, located at 5563 Hoodoo Point Rd, offers a lakeside experience on Lake Vermilion. Based on recent customer reviews, the campground presents a mix of positive aspects, such as clean facilities and good lake access, alongside some challenges regarding site maintenance and infrastructure that potential local campers should be aware of.
The environment of McKinley Park Campground is undoubtedly a major draw, being situated on the shores of Lake Vermilion. This prime location offers campers direct access to the lake for various water-based activities. Reviews mention good fishing and enjoyable canoeing, highlighting the appeal for those who enjoy being on the water. The presence of a beach area, although one reviewer didn't visit it, suggests opportunities for lakeside relaxation. The natural surroundings likely include the typical northern Minnesota landscape of forests and lake views. One camper appreciated hearing the sounds of loons and owls at night, indicating a relatively natural acoustic environment. The abundance of berries and flowers during certain times of the year further enhances the natural appeal. However, one review also noted that the campground is in "desperate need of clearing," with low and encroaching tree branches affecting driving lanes and campsites. This suggests that while the overall location is scenic, the upkeep of the vegetation within the campground might need improvement. Additionally, the terrain of the campsites is described as uneven, with stumps present, which could pose challenges for setting up camping equipment, especially for larger RVs.
In terms of services, McKinley Park Campground offers some useful facilities. One reviewer specifically praised the cleanliness of the bathrooms and showers, noting they were "orderly, clean, and didn't stink," which is a significant positive for any campground. The availability of "plenty of clean water" is also a valuable service. The presence of a pavilion at one campground area was appreciated by a camper. Electric lights in the evening were also noted as a useful amenity. However, another review raised concerns about the campground's power grid, stating that it "could not keep up with the demand" during a hot holiday weekend, leading to multiple power outages. This suggests potential reliability issues with the electrical service, particularly during peak usage times. The same review also mentioned that the power and water supply were installed on the wrong side in many campsites, which could create inconvenience for some campers depending on their setup. The campground is described as having seasonal and daily/weekly camping areas, indicating different types of site arrangements. However, the overflow of seasonal campers' boats and equipment into the driveways of the temporary camping area was reported as a significant issue, making navigation difficult. The presence of semi-permanent structures like decks and sheds in the temporary camping area also suggests a less transient atmosphere in those sections.
The features of McKinley Park Campground are centered around its access to Lake Vermilion and the basic amenities provided. The good fishing and canoeing opportunities are significant features for water sports enthusiasts. The presence of a beach area (though not fully explored by one reviewer) adds to the lakeside appeal. The clean bathrooms and showers are a notable positive feature. However, the negative features mentioned in the reviews should also be considered. The confusing layout upon arrival, as noted by one camper who had to ask for directions, could be a minor inconvenience for first-time visitors. The reported issues with the power grid, particularly during peak times, are a significant concern for campers relying on electricity. The uneven and uncleared campsites with stumps and low-hanging branches could detract from the camping experience and pose challenges for setting up equipment and maneuvering vehicles, especially larger ones. The misplacement of power and water hookups in some sites is another practical challenge. The overflow of seasonal campers' belongings into the temporary camping areas, obstructing access, is a notable drawback that could impact the overall enjoyment and usability of the campground for short-term visitors. The higher cost compared to other parks, as mentioned in one review, makes these maintenance and infrastructure issues even more pertinent for potential campers.
For local users searching for "camping near me" with lake access in the Soudan area, McKinley Park Campground offers a location directly on Lake Vermilion, which is a major advantage for those interested in fishing, canoeing, and enjoying the lake. The reports of clean restroom and shower facilities are also a positive aspect. However, local campers should be aware of the potential downsides highlighted in the reviews. The confusing layout might require some initial navigation. The issues with the power grid, especially during peak summer periods, could be a significant inconvenience for those relying on electricity. The condition of the campsites, with uneven terrain, stumps, and overgrown vegetation, might require extra care in setting up camp and could be a concern for larger RVs. The encroachment of seasonal campers' belongings into the temporary areas could also impact the overall experience, potentially leading to crowded and difficult-to-navigate conditions. The higher cost mentioned in one review suggests that local campers might have higher expectations for the maintenance and infrastructure of the campground.

Inquiring about any improvements or upgrades that might be planned for the facilities could also influence a local camper's decision.
In conclusion, McKinley Park Campground offers a desirable "camping near me" location for local users in Soudan, MN, with direct access to the beautiful Lake Vermilion and generally clean restroom facilities. The opportunities for fishing and canoeing are significant draws. However, potential campers should be aware of the reported issues with a confusing layout, unreliable power, uneven and overgrown campsites, and the overflow of seasonal campers' belongings, which have led to concerns about value for the cost. Local users are strongly encouraged to contact the campground directly to get the most current information on rates, availability, and the status of any maintenance or infrastructure improvements to make an informed decision about their camping experience at McKinley Park Campground.

McKinley Park Campground Reviews
A bit confusing to find the campground, so we stopped and asked for help. Very clean campsite, the bathrooms/showers were orderly, clean, and didn't stink. Fishing was good, canoeing went well! No swimming allowed except at designated areas. 🤷♀️ We enjoyed our stay although we didn't make it down to the beach area. Useful facilities, plenty of clean water and the pavilion at our campground was perfect. We were very thankful for the electric lights in the evening. Was great hearing the loons and owls at night. Disappointed we didn't see any wildlife tho. Berries and flowers were plentiful this time of year! Overall, our tenting experience was worth it!
Aug 04, 2023 · Judith MartinWe were just there for labor day and it was HOT! The campground power grid could not keep up with the demand. We lost power several times. When we asked for a discount we were brushed off. The campground is in desperate need of clearing and leveling in the sites. The tree branches are low and encroaching on driving lanes and camp sites. The sites are full of stumps and even our 28ft camper struggled to get far enough in to be level in our site. The power and water supply is installed on the wrong side in many of the sites. The campground is supposed to be seasonal on one side and daily/weekly on the other. There were so many seasonal campers with boats and equipment overflowing into the driveways that we actually had to ask neighbors to move vehicles to get into our site. The amount of semi permanent decks and sheds in the temporary camping side of the property made it very obvious they were there for the whole summer. We enjoyed the lake and beach and the location is great but navigating in and out around the overflowing sites of the seasonal campers was a real challenge and the power outages and overgrown sites showed the need for a real overhaul of the maintenance in this park. The cost was higher than many of the parks we visit and we still had these issues.
Sep 04, 2023 · Rhiannon MartineauNice campground, neatly setup where tents are lump together and RVs are as well. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table, ample space to setup a large tent and park 2 vehicles. The evenings are quiet and feels safe. The main bathrooms and showers are in the office building but port-a potty are scattered about. The office hours during our visit were 8am-10am. Showers are $1 in quarters per 5 minutes- the downside is that the shower can be loaded in 5 minute increments so essentially having to stop mid-shower to add another 5 minutes and so forth. Bring quarters otherwise there is a convenience store 1.5 miles away.Overall, beautiful lake and great foliage.
Sep 28, 2022 · Prim IlaganLove this place! The front desk are always so nice, welcoming and accommodating. I go camping here every summer with my little family and they provide a boat dock, playground, fish cleaning station, showers and a convenient store! My toddler had so much fun at the docks and at the playground. Your neighbors are in a good distance away where you wouldn’t be hearing their snoring but close enough if you needed assistance. This place provides a very relaxing vibe as well as enjoying the beautiful Lake Vermillion. Camping here is VERY affordable and based on the experience you get here, it should be twice the price.
