Getting to this campground involves a car ferry ride, adding to the sense of adventure. Based on recent customer reviews, the campground itself has its charms, although navigating to it initially can be a bit challenging. If you're a local resident looking for a unique outdoor escape, camping on Middle Bass Island might be just what you're seeking.
The environment of Middle Bass Island State Park Campground is inherently tied to its island location in Lake Erie. This suggests a setting surrounded by water, with opportunities for lake activities such as swimming. One reviewer mentioned taking a morning walk to the end of the park for a dip in the lake, recommending water shoes. This highlights the potential for enjoying the natural beauty and recreational opportunities that come with a lakeside campground on an island. Local users interested in "camping near me" with access to swimming and waterfront views might find this appealing.
In terms of services, one reviewer noted that the "showers and bathrooms at the main building were fine." This indicates that basic but functional facilities are available for campers. State park campgrounds often provide essential amenities like restrooms, showers, and sometimes picnic areas and fire rings at the campsites. Local users considering "camping near me" here can likely expect these fundamental services.
One helpful tip from a visitor is to "rent a golf cart at Walleye’s if one is available." This suggests that the island, and possibly the campground, might be conducive to getting around via golf cart, which could enhance the overall experience of exploring the area. For local campers looking for a relaxed pace and a unique way to navigate their "camping near me" destination, this is a valuable piece of advice.
A significant point of feedback from one reviewer was the difficulty in finding the campsite initially due to a lack of signs. They mentioned that even asking multiple people, including the sheriff, did not yield clear directions. Ultimately, they discovered that it is a short walk to the right of the main dock after getting off the ferry. This is crucial information for local users planning their "camping near me" trip to Middle Bass Island. Be prepared for potentially unclear signage upon arrival and head towards the right of the main dock after disembarking the ferry to locate the campground.
Despite the initial navigational challenge, the reviewer who had difficulty finding the campsite still described it as "nice." This suggests that once you arrive at the campground itself, the experience is positive. The mention of following a dirt road to find the sites by another reviewer also gives a sense of the campground's layout – perhaps somewhat rustic and integrated with the natural surroundings of the island.
Based on these reviews, local users considering Middle Bass Island State Park Campground for their "camping near me" needs can expect:
- A unique island camping environment on Lake Erie with opportunities for swimming.
- Basic but "fine" showers and bathrooms at the main building.
- A campground that might be best explored with a rented golf cart.
- Potential difficulty in initially locating the campground upon arrival – head to the right of the main ferry dock.
- A "nice" campsite experience once found, likely with a somewhat rustic feel along dirt roads.
As this is a state park campground, it's also likely that there are designated campsites, and possibly amenities like picnic tables and fire rings. Local users should check the official Ohio State Parks website for more detailed information on the specific services and features available at Middle Bass Island State Park Campground, as well as any rules and regulations.
The experience of taking a ferry to reach the campground adds an element of adventure that is not typical of mainland "camping near me" options. This could be particularly appealing to local residents looking for a getaway that feels more remote and distinct from their everyday surroundings.
In conclusion, if you're a local user in search of "camping near me" with a twist, Middle Bass Island State Park Campground offers a unique island camping experience on Lake Erie. Be prepared for a ferry ride and potential initial difficulty in locating the campground, but once there, you can enjoy lakeside activities and the natural beauty of the island. Dec 11, 2024 · Chris KraszewskiThis camp site is nice but beware it is impossible to find. There are no sings posted showing the way. We asked multiple people including the sheriff and nobody could give us clear directions. Finally through walking over all the paths we discovered it is a short walk to the right of the main dock as you get off the ferry.
May 27, 2024 · Zeynep TolonThis campground is open. It just moved from the west side of the island to the southeast side. Easy walk, take a right when you get off the ferry. Somebody keeps reporting it as permanent closed. It is open.
