Monture Campground Introduce
For local users browsing the "camping near me" category and seeking a tranquil and nature-focused camping experience, Monture Campground, located in Ovando, Montana, offers a peaceful retreat. Situated just off the highway, this campground provides a convenient yet quiet spot for an overnight stay or an early-season escape. While it offers a more rustic experience with no hookups, its natural beauty, potential for wildlife sightings, and proximity to local attractions make it a worthwhile consideration for those seeking a low-key Montana camping adventure.
Environment: Quiet Beauty and Wildlife Encounters
Monture Campground appears to be characterized by a serene and natural environment. One reviewer noted its "super quiet" atmosphere, particularly during the early season in May, suggesting a peaceful ambiance that allows campers to truly connect with their surroundings. The presence of "lovely" grass indicates a well-maintained natural ground cover, contributing to the overall pleasantness of the camping area.
The campground's location just off the highway provides easy accessibility while still offering a sense of being removed from the direct hustle and bustle. This balance of convenience and tranquility can be particularly appealing for those looking for a quick overnight stop or a relaxed weekend getaway without venturing too far off the beaten path.
A significant environmental feature highlighted by a visitor is the frequent presence of various wildlife animals. This suggests that Monture Campground is situated in an area where local fauna are active and may be observed by respectful campers. Wildlife viewing can add a unique and memorable dimension to the camping experience, allowing visitors to appreciate Montana's natural biodiversity.
While the immediate surroundings of the campground are not extensively described, the mention of well-tended fire pits suggests designated areas for campfires, a quintessential part of the camping experience. These fire pits likely encourage responsible fire management and provide a focal point for evening gatherings.
The proximity to Garnet Ghost Town, less than 30 miles away, adds an element of historical and cultural interest to the location. Campers at Monture Campground have the opportunity to easily explore this well-preserved piece of Montana's past, offering a unique day trip option to complement their natural retreat.
Services and Facilities: Rustic Simplicity with Clean Basics
Monture Campground offers a more basic camping experience, as explicitly stated by one reviewer noting "no hookups here." This means that campers should be prepared for dry camping, without direct connections for water, electricity, or sewer at their campsites. This type of camping often appeals to those who prefer a more traditional and self-sufficient outdoor experience.
Despite the lack of hookups, the campground provides essential facilities for basic comfort. The bathroom, described as "freshly painted and clean," indicates that efforts are made to maintain a hygienic environment for campers. This is a significant factor in the overall camping experience, especially in more rustic settings.
The presence of a "pit toilet" is also mentioned, which is a common type of restroom facility in campgrounds without full plumbing. One reviewer noted that the flooring in the pit toilet "slanted somewhat," which created a balance problem for them. While this seems to be an isolated issue, it's a specific detail to be aware of for individuals who might have mobility or balance concerns.
The well-tended fire pits suggest a basic amenity provided for campers to safely enjoy campfires. It's likely that campers would need to bring their own firewood or purchase it locally, adhering to any fire regulations in place.
The early season visit in May revealed that fishing was not yet permitted until May 25th. This indicates that Monture Campground might be located near a body of water where fishing is a popular activity during the appropriate season. Campers planning to fish should be mindful of opening dates and any relevant fishing regulations.
Features and Activities: Quiet Relaxation and Local Exploration
The primary feature of Monture Campground is its tranquil atmosphere, particularly appealing for those seeking a peaceful escape. The quiet setting allows for relaxation, enjoyment of nature's sounds, and a break from more bustling environments.
Wildlife viewing is another potential feature, offering the chance to observe local animals in their natural habitat. Campers should always maintain a respectful distance and follow guidelines for safe wildlife encounters.
The proximity to Garnet Ghost Town provides a unique opportunity for a historical excursion. Exploring the well-preserved buildings of this former mining town offers a fascinating glimpse into Montana's past and can be a rewarding day trip for campers at Monture Campground.
While not explicitly detailed, the natural environment likely offers opportunities for short hikes or nature walks around the campground. The "lovely" grass suggests some open areas that might be pleasant for strolling or simply relaxing outdoors.
For those seeking a simple overnight stop while traveling through the area, Monture Campground's location just off the highway provides convenience without sacrificing a peaceful night's rest.

Monture Campground Reviews
It was super quiet this early in May and there's no fishing at until May 25th so we had this beautiful spot to ourselves. The grass is lovely the fire pits are well tended and the bathroom was freshly painted and clean. Garnet Ghost Town is less than 30 miles away.
May 03, 2025 · Karen Dana MillerThis quiet spot just off the highway was perfect for an overnight stay. There are no hookups here. Quite a few different wildlife animals visited during our stay. The pit toilet flooring slanted somewhat which created a balance problem for me.
Aug 06, 2024 · Laureen ChaffinNice campground with five sites, three near the water and two up by the road. Site has a pit toilet, ok shade, but no water. Just a short walk down to the river for a swim or fishing. Creek water clouds up after a rain due to erosion from a fire in 2019.
Jul 27, 2020 · Carrington StoffelsHave stopped here to get in river and fish. Has drop toilet and a few nice camping spots off the highway.
