This was our firsts camping trip to Oak Knoll. It was a nice campground, some garbage left from the people before but overall very nice. The bathrooms are disgusting… but we did learn there are showers and bathrooms in some locations. The Rangers were super nice and they came by to see if we had any issues with noise. Overall it was a great experience and we will be back! Be warned though the bill frogs are annoying 😆 Oh and the water was lovely!!! - Tria Behler

Oak Knoll Campground Introduce

Oak Knoll Campground, located at 2321 S Petersburg Rd, Valley Springs, CA 95252, USA, is a popular destination within the "Camping Near Me" category, attracting visitors to the scenic New Hogan Lake area. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this campground offers a more rustic, semi-primitive camping experience, appealing to those who appreciate natural settings and outdoor activities. However, recent feedback from campers highlights both its enduring appeal and significant concerns, particularly regarding overnight security and restroom cleanliness.

The environment at Oak Knoll Campground is characterized by its setting along New Hogan Lake, nestled in the brush-covered foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The campground is shaded by "gorgeous oak trees," providing a pleasant and natural ambiance. The lake itself is a major draw, offering opportunities for water activities, with the water often described as "lovely." Visitors can expect to see wildlife, with "tons of wildlife visitors," including deer, and hear "bullfrogs" which, while part of the natural soundscape, some find "annoying." The campground provides an excellent environment for "excellent star watching" due to minimal light pollution. However, the ground conditions can be a factor; some sites are not perfectly level and may require additional effort for RV setup. Additionally, while the natural setting is appreciated, some reviews mention "garbage left from the people before," suggesting that campsite cleanliness upon arrival can sometimes be an issue. The campground aims to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere amidst its natural setting.

Oak Knoll Campground provides essential services for campers, though it's important to set expectations, especially regarding facilities. The campsites typically include a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill grate. It's crucial for RV and trailer campers to note that Oak Knoll is generally a primitive group of sites, meaning it "doesn't include many bells and whistles." Specifically, it "does not have showers" at every location, and water hookups or electric hookups are typically not available directly at each site. While potable water is often provided via spigots throughout the campground, campers with RVs should be prepared for a "no water or electric hookups" scenario, requiring them to be self-contained or to bring plenty of their own water. Restroom facilities are primarily "outhouses" or "vault toilets," which have received mixed reviews regarding cleanliness; some describe them as "disgusting" or having "A LOT of bugs," while others note them as "large and did not smell" or "maintained very good," suggesting inconsistency. The campground also includes a "dump station" for RVs. Park rangers are noted to be "super nice" and "on top of it" during daylight hours, making "regular rounds" and ensuring vehicles have proper parking tags. However, a significant concern raised is the lack of staff presence or effective security after sunset, leading to "random outside vehicles pull up to use the shower facilities" and "transients at night," impacting the safety and comfort of campers. For general inquiries, the campground can be reached at (209) 772-1343 or +1 209-772-1343.

The features of Oak Knoll Campground are centered around its natural setting and recreational potential. Its direct access to New Hogan Lake allows for a variety of water activities, including "swimming, fishing, and boating." The lake is known for its clear waters and offers opportunities for anglers. Beyond the lake, the campground is excellent for "nature walks," and the surrounding area offers "hiking and biking trails." The campground is also situated in a region known for wildlife, making it a good spot for "wildlife visitors," such as deer. Another notable feature is its affordability, often listed at a reasonable price per night, with discounts for certain passes. However, a significant feature that has become a concern is the issue of security during nighttime hours. One detailed review reported an incident of "1 guy rummaging through items we left on our table at mid night" and other instances of unauthorized individuals using facilities, leading to a sense of unease. While the presence of rangers is strong during the day, the lack of nightly presence is a critical feature to consider. The "bull frogs" are also a consistent feature, contributing to the ambient sounds of the night, though some find them disruptive. Despite these security and noise concerns, the beauty of the location and the warmth of the day staff contribute to many campers' desire to "be back."

Promotional information for Oak Knoll Campground would typically highlight its serene lakeside environment, making it an ideal spot for outdoor enthusiasts searching for "Camping Near Me." The emphasis would be on the "lovely" lake, opportunities for "swimming, fishing, and boating," and the chance to enjoy "nature walks" and "excellent star watching." The friendly rangers and the generally positive daytime experience would be part of the appeal. For those seeking a return to basic, unhooked camping, its "semi-primitive" nature could be seen as a feature. However, an objective introduction must also convey the practical realities and challenges. Therefore, potential visitors should be aware that while the setting is beautiful, the lack of full hookups means RVs need to be self-contained. More importantly, campers should be explicitly advised to secure their belongings, avoid leaving items unattended, and be aware of potential nighttime disturbances from unauthorized individuals using the facilities, as reported in reviews. It would be beneficial for any promotional materials to include tips for ensuring a safe and comfortable stay, given these reported issues. Despite the concerns, many campers find the natural beauty and recreational opportunities at Oak Knoll Campground compelling enough to return, suggesting that with proper preparation and awareness, it remains a worthwhile outdoor destination.
