Obsidian Flat Group Campground

Deadman Creek Rd, June Lake, CA 93529, USA

5.0
Great group site with 2 bear cabinets, bar height meal prep table, 4 picnic tables, and 2 toilets. Plenty of room at this site as it will easily hold 50 campers in tents. Little hard to find. When you pull off Deadman Creak Rd go straight don't take any left or right turns and there is a sign that says dead end and that's where you are going. Gate code comes in reservation confirmation. You're pretty isolated and some cell service works. Activities are exploring, hiking, and biking. Deadman Creak has trout but the weird creek right by the site disappears into the ground even with a good flow. - Pat Dannenberg

Obsidian Flat Group Campground Introduce

For individuals and groups utilizing "Camping Near Me" search platforms to find their next outdoor adventure in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, Obsidian Flat Group Campground, located at Deadman Creek Rd, June Lake, CA 93529, USA, presents a distinct option. This campground, nestled within the vast Inyo National Forest, is particularly tailored for larger gatherings seeking a more isolated and expansive camping experience compared to typical individual campsites. Its phone number is (760) 924-5500, or +1 760-924-5500.

The environment at Obsidian Flat Group Campground is characterized by its secluded nature and tranquil, forested setting. Situated at an elevation of approximately 7,800 feet, the campground is surrounded by a peaceful pine forest, offering ample shade and a sense of being deeply immersed in nature. The area is known for its mountain views and proximity to interesting geological features, including the obsidian lava flow from which the campground derives its name. Deadman Creek runs adjacent to the facility, although a reviewer notes that a peculiar creek right by the site sometimes "disappears into the ground even with a good flow." This natural phenomenon adds a unique element to the landscape. The remote location ensures a quiet experience, with campers remarking on the absence of traffic noise, contributing to a truly peaceful getaway. Wildlife, such as black bears, mountain lions, mule deer, and various bird species, are residents of this mountain ecosystem, adding to the wilderness ambiance. Therefore, proper food storage in designated bear boxes is crucial for camper safety and wildlife protection.

In terms of services, Obsidian Flat Group Campground provides essential amenities for a comfortable, albeit primitive, group camping experience. Each group site is amply equipped to accommodate a significant number of campers. Key services and facilities typically include: two bear cabinets (secure food storage lockers essential for bear country), a bar-height meal prep table, four picnic tables for group dining, and two vault toilets (non-flush). It is important to note that, unlike some other campgrounds in the region, Obsidian Flat Group Campground does not have drinking water available. This means campers must bring their own supply of potable water, a critical detail for planning. While phone service can be spotty due to the secluded nature, some cell service reportedly works for certain carriers, offering a degree of connectivity. The campground typically operates seasonally, from mid-May to mid-September, depending on snow levels, and has a 14-day stay limit. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made online, with a gate code provided in the confirmation for entry, ensuring the seclusion of the site. Fees are charged nightly for use of the site.

The features of Obsidian Flat Group Campground are designed to cater specifically to large groups. The single, expansive group site can easily accommodate up to 50 campers in tents, offering "plenty of room." It can also accommodate vehicles up to 40 feet in length, making it suitable for RVs or trailers, although the primary focus remains on tent camping for large gatherings. The site's layout provides a significant degree of privacy, allowing groups to enjoy their activities without feeling crowded by other campers. The sturdy picnic tables and fire rings with grill grates are standard, facilitating cooking and communal gathering around a campfire. The presence of multiple bear boxes underscores the commitment to safety in an active wildlife area. Its location off Deadman Creek Road, while described as "a little hard to find" by one reviewer, offers a sense of discovery and genuine wilderness seclusion once successfully navigated. The directions provided typically advise continuing straight on Deadman Creek Road, ignoring turns, until a "dead end" sign is encountered, which marks the entrance. This isolation is a key feature for those seeking an escape from more crowded campgrounds.

From a promotional standpoint, Obsidian Flat Group Campground is marketed as a prime location for a "secluded getaway" in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. It appeals to groups looking for a private base camp from which to explore the vast recreational opportunities of the Inyo National Forest. The area is highly popular for various outdoor activities, including exploring the surrounding forest and unique geology. Hiking is a major draw, with numerous trails, including the Deadman Creek Trail, leading into the spectacular Ansel Adams Wilderness. Biking is also a popular activity, with options for both single track and dirt roads. For anglers, Deadman Creek itself offers opportunities for trout fishing. The region is also a hotspot for off-road vehicle (OHV/ATV) riding, with an extensive network of trails to explore. The proximity to renowned natural attractions like Yosemite National Park (ideal for a day trip), Mono Lake, and the scenic Tioga Pass further enhances its appeal for those interested in extended exploration of the High Sierra. While the campground itself does not offer amenities like showers or potable water, this is often promoted as part of the "primitive" or "rustic" experience that appeals to more seasoned campers who prioritize solitude and self-sufficiency. The ability to reserve the site up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov highlights its popularity and the need for early planning, especially during peak season.

In conclusion, for those searching for "Camping Near Me" with an emphasis on group accommodations and a true wilderness experience near June Lake, Obsidian Flat Group Campground stands out. Its environment offers a peaceful, forested retreat with mountain views and wildlife presence, while its services provide essential facilities like bear-proof storage and vault toilets (though campers must bring their own water). Its key features include large, private sites perfect for up to 50 people and accommodating larger vehicles. The overall promotional message emphasizes its secluded nature and access to a wide array of outdoor activities, making it an ideal choice for groups seeking an immersive and self-reliant camping adventure in the heart of the Eastern Sierra Nevada.
