Upper Soda Springs Campground Introduce
Upper Soda Springs Campground, located at the scenic intersection of Reds Meadow Road and Upper Soda Springs Rd in Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, consistently receives high praise as a premier destination within the "Camping Near Me" category. Situated within the breathtaking Reds Meadow Valley of the Inyo National Forest, this mid-sized campground offers a truly immersive nature experience, boasting beautiful surroundings, exceptionally clean facilities, and a friendly atmosphere that makes it a favorite among visitors.
The environment of Upper Soda Springs Campground is arguably its most captivating feature. Nestled along the banks of the picturesque San Joaquin River, many campsites offer direct access to the soothing sounds and views of the flowing water. The campground is surrounded by the stunning high-altitude landscape of the Eastern Sierra Nevada, characterized by towering pine trees that provide ample shade and a sense of natural tranquility. The air is crisp and clean, and the overall ambiance is one of serenity and natural beauty. The Reds Meadow Valley, where the campground is located, is a glacially carved canyon known for its dramatic scenery, including views of the majestic Minarets. Reviewers consistently highlight the "gorgeous" nature in and around the campground, emphasizing its spacious and tidy layout that complements the natural surroundings. It's an active bear area, so the pristine environment comes with the responsibility of adhering to strict food storage guidelines.
Upper Soda Springs Campground is lauded for its commitment to providing clean and functional services, significantly enhancing the camping experience. Key amenities and services include:
- Campsites: The campground features 28 or 29 campsites, suitable for tents, trailers, and small RVs (maximum recommended vehicle length is often around 25 feet, though some sources state 20 feet). Each site typically includes a picnic table, a fire ring or grill, and a bear-proof food storage locker, which is mandatory for storing all food and scented items.
- Restrooms: Visitors frequently rave about the cleanliness of the campground's bathrooms. These are typically pit toilets (vault toilets), but their exceptional upkeep is a standout feature, often described as the "cleanest campground bathrooms I have ever used."
- Potable Water: Access to potable (drinking) water is available at the campground, which is a crucial convenience for campers.
- Camp Hosts: A consistent highlight in reviews is the presence of "exceptional" and "joyful" camp hosts, such as "Gary," who are described as always being around with help, knowledge, and a welcoming demeanor. A friendly and helpful camp host significantly contributes to the positive atmosphere and smooth operation of the campground.
- No Showers: While facilities are clean, it's important to note that Upper Soda Springs Campground typically does not offer showers. Shower facilities may be available at the nearby Reds Meadow Resort.
Given its popularity, the campground operates on a first-come, first-served (FCFS) basis, meaning reservations are generally not available. This adds to its rustic appeal but also requires campers to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a site.
Upper Soda Springs Campground is rich in features that cater to outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those interested in fishing and hiking:
- Riverside Location: Being "perfectly placed along the river" (the San Joaquin River) makes it an ideal spot for fly fishing and general trout fishing. The San Joaquin River is known for its diverse water types, offering excellent opportunities for anglers. Nearby lakes in Reds Meadow also offer fishing opportunities.
- Abundant Hiking Trails: The campground serves as a prime base for exploring a multitude of hiking trails in the surrounding area. Reviewers mention "amazing half-day hikes" and "lots of surrounding hiking trails, waterfalls, and other adventures." This includes access to trails leading to iconic destinations like Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls.
- Proximity to Natural Wonders: Its location in the Reds Meadow Valley provides immediate access to major natural attractions. Devils Postpile National Monument, a unique basalt column formation, and Rainbow Falls, a stunning 101-foot waterfall, are easily accessible via hiking trails or the Reds Meadow Shuttle.
- Quiet and Spaciou: Despite being a popular destination, the campground is often described as "spacious and tidy," allowing for a sense of privacy and tranquility even when busy.
- Wildlife Viewing: The natural setting means opportunities to observe local wildlife, though campers must always be bear-aware and use food lockers.
The campground's charm lies in its balance of essential amenities with a raw, natural setting, making it attractive to those who seek an authentic outdoor experience without venturing into full backcountry camping.
Upper Soda Springs Campground is managed by the Inyo National Forest and operates seasonally, typically from late spring (around June/July, depending on snowmelt and road conditions) through the fall (usually early October). Due to its first-come, first-served policy and popularity, securing a site, especially on weekends or holidays, requires early arrival. The phone number (760) 934-5795 can be used for inquiries, though it's often the number for the Reds Meadow Ranger Station or Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center, which can provide current conditions and accessibility information. Information on the campground is also available through the Inyo National Forest website and Visit Mammoth.
Access to Upper Soda Springs Campground is primarily via Reds Meadow Road. This road is subject to seasonal closures due to snow and can be narrow and winding. During the peak summer season (generally mid-June to early September), access to Reds Meadow Valley is often restricted, and visitors are required to use the mandatory Reds Meadow Shuttle Bus from Mammoth Lakes. This shuttle service helps reduce congestion and preserve the fragile valley environment. However, private vehicles with campground reservations or those staying at Reds Meadow Resort may have exceptions. It is critical for visitors to check the latest information on Reds Meadow Road access and shuttle schedules before planning a trip, as significant road reconstruction projects are impacting travel in 2025 and possibly beyond.
Despite the access considerations, the allure of Upper Soda Springs Campground remains strong. Its prime location along the San Joaquin River, exceptionally clean facilities, and proximity to world-class hiking and fishing make it an unforgettable destination for campers seeking a high-quality outdoor experience in the majestic Mammoth Lakes area.

Upper Soda Springs Campground Reviews
My husband has always raved about this area, and it did not disappoint. Upper Soda Springs is my FAVORITE campground we have ever been to. The campground was spacious and tidy, and the bathrooms were the cleanest campground bathrooms I have ever used. Gary was an exceptional host, always around with help and knowledge. The nature in and around the campground was gorgeous! John walked to fly fish, we had two amazing half-day hikes, and there is still so much for us to explore. Can't wait to go back again asap!! Thanks so much to Gary and all for the fantastic week!
Aug 08, 2022 · Celia BartholomewI’ve been fishing around the San Joaquin for years but last July was my first time camping there and it was an amazing experience! Clean pit toilets, great campsites, and potable water. The campground is beautiful and perfectly placed along the river with lots of surrounding hiking trails, waterfalls, and other adventures. Our camp host Gary was also a joy to be around, very welcoming and fun to talk to. Can’t wait to camp there again!
May 19, 2023 · Ruby LinstadtI have been camping with my new family in upper soda springs for the past 3yrs and have to say that Gary is a great camp host. His orientation is very informative and the bathrooms are very clean. He has a great dog, Dr. Suess. The hiking trails are wonderful and the store at the Reds Meadow pack station is a great place to treat yourself to an ice cream. Rainbow falls is a must see.
Aug 09, 2022 · Jeffrey JonesThis is one of the best campsite in the valley. Our family has been camping in the valley for over 50yrs.Gary has been the camp host in upper soda springs for the last few years and I have found him to be one of the best hosts we have ever had.For anyone looking to camp in the Mammoth Lakes area, I highly recommend the Reds Meadow Valley.
Aug 09, 2022 · Jimmy AndersonOur families have been camping at Upper Soda Springs for over 37 years. Without a doubt, Gary is the best Campground Host we have had. He went above and beyond to accommodate our group of 30 and make sure we had the best sites for our needs. He even gives badges to the kids as an incentive to be responsible campers. The campground and facilities have never been in better shape! Now if we can just get Fish and Game to start stocking again!
