Minaret Falls Campground

Reds Meadow, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA

4.0
Ok I have been spoiled by campgrounds that are nicer in my opinion. 1st: Single lane dirt road in and out with lots of sharp turns and smooth dirt hills. 2: Hard to get potable water in your trailer. 3: Unpaved or leveled campsites. 4: Not a place to go with a 25' or larger trailer 5: No flushing toilets or sinks to wash up after restroom use. This campground is better suited for rent or pop up trailers. Be wary if there is rain in the forecast if you don't have four wheel drive and are pulling a trailer. Beautiful views and fishing isn't very good in the immediate area. I will not go back with my trailer. Tent maybe. Have fun ! - Christopher Pepper

Minaret Falls Campground Introduce

For those seeking an authentic and somewhat rugged camping experience in the heart of the Eastern Sierra, Minaret Falls Campground in Reds Meadow, Mammoth Lakes, CA, presents a unique opportunity. While it may not offer all the modern conveniences of larger campgrounds, its stunning natural setting, proximity to a beautiful waterfall, and access to an array of outdoor activities make it a highly recommended destination for campers looking for a true escape. If you're searching for "Camping Near Me" and prefer a more natural, less crowded environment, Minaret Falls could be your perfect match.

Environment: A Serene Setting Amidst Sierra Majesty

Minaret Falls Campground is nestled in the picturesque Reds Meadow Valley, within the vast expanse of the Inyo National Forest. This area is renowned for its dramatic mountain scenery, dense forests of Jeffrey pines, and pristine waterways. The campground itself is situated along a tranquil creek, and as its name suggests, offers views of a beautiful waterfall – Minaret Falls – from many campsites. Waking up to the sight and sound of the waterfall is a frequently praised highlight by visitors, creating an incredibly serene atmosphere.

The immediate environment around the campground is characterized by unpaved or unleveled campsites, contributing to its rustic appeal. While this adds to the natural feel, it's an important consideration for campers, particularly those with larger trailers. The access road into Reds Meadow Valley, and subsequently to Minaret Falls Campground, is a single-lane dirt road with numerous sharp turns and smooth dirt hills. This challenging access means that while it's traversable, it can be particularly difficult for vehicles exceeding 25 feet, especially when pulling a trailer. Campers are advised to be wary if rain is in the forecast, as the dirt road can become very slick, potentially requiring four-wheel drive for trailers.

The campground is surrounded by a number of smaller lakes and is a prime base for exploring the diverse landscapes of the Eastern Sierra. The climate is typical of a high-altitude mountain environment, with warm summer days and cool nights, often dipping to chilly temperatures. Snowfall typically closes the access road for a significant portion of the year, with the campground usually open only during the summer season, approximately from June to October, depending on snowmelt and road conditions.

Services and Amenities: Embracing the Rustic Experience

Minaret Falls Campground offers a more traditional camping experience, focusing on essential amenities rather than luxury. It features 26 or 27 first-come, first-served campsites. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and crucially, a bear-proof food storage locker. This is a critical amenity, as the area is known for a high level of bear activity. All food and scented items must be stored in these lockers, and trash must be disposed of in bear-proof receptacles to ensure both camper safety and wildlife protection. The typical bear box size is 48"x 30"x 36".

Restroom facilities at Minaret Falls Campground are vault toilets, meaning there are no flushing toilets or sinks for handwashing after use. There are also no showers available at the campground. While some campers might see this as a drawback, many embrace it as part of the authentic camping experience, stating that "who really goes camping to stay squeaky clean anyway?" Potable water is available at the site, though some visitors have noted it can be hard to get water into larger trailers directly, suggesting it's more suited for filling portable containers.

Cell service is generally not available in the Reds Meadow area, including at Minaret Falls Campground, providing a true opportunity to disconnect and immerse oneself in nature. The nearest town for supplies, Mammoth Lakes, is about 12 miles away, approximately a 20-minute drive. There is also a small store and pack station close to Reds Meadow for basic needs. It is important to note that access into Reds Meadow Valley often involves an amenity fee, and there is also a mandatory shuttle bus system during peak operating hours for day-use visitors, though campers with reservations are usually permitted to drive their private vehicles directly to the campground.

Features: A Haven for Outdoor Enthusiasts

The main draw of Minaret Falls Campground is its incredible access to a myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities. Its location off the beaten path provides a welcome change from the overcrowding sometimes found at other popular sites like Convict Lake, allowing for a more peaceful interaction with nature.

The campground is an ideal base for:

  • Fishing: While fishing might not be stellar in the immediate vicinity of the campground itself, Minaret Falls is surrounded by numerous smaller lakes and is located along a creek that flows into the San Joaquin River. This makes it a perfect base for anglers looking to catch various trout species, including rainbow and brown trout. There are over 400 lakes and 1,000 miles of rivers and streams in the broader Mammoth Lakes area, offering abundant fishing opportunities.
  • Hiking: The area offers a vast network of trails catering to all levels. From the campground, hikers can embark on treks to the beautiful Minaret Falls itself, or explore longer trails that lead into the Ansel Adams Wilderness. Nearby attractions like Devils Postpile National Monument (known for its unique basalt columns) and Rainbow Falls are also accessible, though visitors should check the Reds Meadow Road and shuttle schedules for access.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The Inyo National Forest is home to diverse wildlife. While searching for "Bigfoot" might be a playful joke, campers are likely to encounter deer, various bird species, and potentially even bears. The active bear presence necessitates strict adherence to food storage regulations.
  • Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the night sky at Minaret Falls Campground is often spectacular, offering incredible opportunities for stargazing.
