Ojibwa Campground

Baraga, MI 49908, USA

The process of checking in seems easy enough, but if you don't leave something at your site, it will be taken because campers have no idea who is parked where. We've had a never-ending stream of "you can't park there," "I paid for this spot," "you have 30min to move because we need this spot for the powwow next weekend," etc. Someone even called the police because we plugged a fan into the electricity. A car full of women showed up one day last week and accused us of not paying, which we had. Helpful signage is basically nonexistent. The showers and toilets didn't work the first two weeks we were here, and they didn't provide portapotties in the powwow grounds. The showers are definitely camper showers (gotta push a button every 30-60 sec to keep the water flowing, and there's no temp control). People smoke pot and let their dogs off-leash on the day beach (we had an off-leash dog charge at me and my leashed dog). When it hasn't been a total nightmare, it's been ok. 🤷‍♀️ It is beautiful! - Neena Raine

Ojibwa Campground Introduce

For local users in the Baraga, Michigan area who are searching within the 'camping near me' category, Ojibwa Campground, located in Baraga, MI 49908, USA, presents itself as a potential option. However, recent feedback from campers reveals significant issues regarding the campground's organization, amenities, and overall atmosphere, which local users should carefully consider alongside its noted natural beauty before deciding to stay here.

The environment of Ojibwa Campground is described by one reviewer as "beautiful!" Another highlights the "Red pine canopy" which creates a visually appealing campground and pow wow setting. This natural beauty is a definite positive aspect for local campers who appreciate a scenic backdrop for their outdoor experience. The presence of wildlife, including sightings of "bear, eagles, and a high diversity of plants and other animals on the trails and beach nearby," further enhances the appeal for nature lovers. The proximity to trails and a beach suggests opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the outdoors. For local users prioritizing a visually stunning natural environment, Ojibwa Campground appears to offer this.

However, the positive aspects of the environment are overshadowed by significant concerns raised about the campground's services and management. One of the primary issues highlighted is the apparent lack of clear organization regarding campsite allocation. The review mentions a "never-ending stream" of conflicts over parking and site reservations, with campers being told they are in the wrong spot, even after setting up. The lack of "helpful signage" seems to be a contributing factor to this confusion. The incident where the police were called over plugging in a fan suggests a rigid and potentially unreasonable enforcement of rules, or at least a lack of clear communication regarding them. The accusation of not paying, despite having done so, further points to organizational deficiencies.

The functionality of essential amenities also appears to be a significant problem. The reviewer states that "The showers and toilets didn't work the first two weeks we were here," and that "they didn't provide portapotties in the powwow grounds" during this period. This lack of basic and functional facilities would undoubtedly create a very unpleasant experience for campers. Even when the showers were working, they are described as "definitely camper showers" requiring a button to be pushed every 30-60 seconds for water flow and lacking temperature control, indicating a less than comfortable experience. These issues with basic amenities are serious drawbacks for local users expecting a minimum level of comfort and convenience during their camping trip.

The review also raises concerns about rule enforcement and the behavior of other campers. The mention of "People smoke pot and let their dogs off-leash on the day beach" suggests a lack of consistent enforcement of campground rules, potentially leading to discomfort and safety concerns for other visitors. The incident where an "off-leash dog charge at me and my leashed dog" is particularly concerning for pet owners and anyone prioritizing safety. These issues indicate a potentially chaotic and poorly managed environment that could detract significantly from a relaxing camping experience for local users.

The reference to the "powwow next weekend" and the need to move sites highlights a potential conflict between general campground use and special events. Local users planning a stay should be aware that their site might be subject to change or unavailability due to such events, and communication regarding this seems to be lacking, as indicated by the abrupt requests to move. This uncertainty and potential disruption could be a major inconvenience for local campers.

Despite these numerous issues, the reviewer offers a somewhat conflicted summary: "When it hasn't been a total nightmare, it's been ok. 🤷‍♀️ It is beautiful!" This acknowledges the inherent beauty of the location but underscores the significant problems experienced during their stay. For local users considering Ojibwa Campground, this suggests a trade-off between a potentially stunning natural environment and a high risk of encountering organizational problems, amenity issues, and disruptive behavior from other campers.

Given the overwhelmingly negative feedback regarding the management and amenities, there is no information available to discuss specific services or promotional offers in a positive light. Local users searching for 'camping near me' in Baraga, MI, should be extremely cautious when considering Ojibwa Campground based on the issues raised in the provided review. While the natural beauty of the location is undeniable, the potential for a frustrating and uncomfortable experience due to organizational problems, non-functional amenities, and a lack of rule enforcement appears to be substantial. Local campers are strongly advised to seek further information, possibly from more recent reviews or by contacting the campground directly to inquire about the current state of affairs and whether the issues raised have been addressed. It would be prudent to explore alternative campgrounds in the Baraga area that have more consistently positive feedback regarding their management and facilities to ensure a more enjoyable and stress-free local camping experience.
