Perrault Lake Campground

Toivola, MI 49965, USA

This boondocking spot was quite lovely for the week. Parked right on the lake, beautiful woods, an easy trail around the lake, remote and unpopular, yet only 15 minutes to downtown city of Houghton...what more could you ask for? We lovvvvved it here!Although it's called a "campground" on the map, it's really not ... No toilets, hookups, staff etc, just a remote section of the woods carved out (naturally I believe?) that people boondock at. It's great! In our 2 years of full time travel, it was definitely a gem of a boondocking spot. - Tom C

Perrault Lake Campground Introduce

For local adventurers seeking a truly off-the-grid camping experience within the 'camping near me' category, Perrault Lake near Toivola, Michigan, presents a unique opportunity. While it may be labeled as a "campground" on some maps, it's essential to understand that Perrault Lake operates as a boondocking location, offering a completely different style of camping compared to traditional campgrounds with developed amenities.

The environment surrounding Perrault Lake is consistently described as "lovely" and featuring "beautiful woods." Imagine parking your rig or setting up your tent right on the shores of the lake, immersing yourself in the tranquility of nature. The presence of an "easy trail around the lake" suggests opportunities for leisurely walks and further exploration of the surrounding natural beauty. Its remote and reportedly "unpopular" nature promises a secluded and peaceful escape, ideal for those looking to disconnect and enjoy solitude in the wilderness.

One of the most significant aspects of Perrault Lake as a 'camping near me' option is its boondocking nature. This means that, unlike conventional campgrounds, you should not expect to find typical amenities such as toilets, hookups for water, electricity, or sewer, or on-site staff. As one reviewer explicitly stated, "it's really not ... No toilets, hookups, staff etc, just a remote section of the woods carved out (naturally I believe?) that people boondock at. It's great!" This highlights the primitive and self-sufficient nature of camping at Perrault Lake. Boondocking enthusiasts who are comfortable with off-grid living and providing for their own needs will find this aspect appealing.

Despite its remote feel, Perrault Lake boasts a surprising advantage: its proximity to the "downtown city of Houghton," which is reportedly only 15 minutes away. This offers a unique balance between wilderness seclusion and accessibility to urban conveniences, should you need to resupply or explore local attractions. This combination of remoteness and nearby amenities could be particularly attractive to local campers who appreciate both nature and the option of accessing city resources.

For those new to boondocking or considering Perrault Lake for the first time, it's important to be prepared for self-sufficiency. You will need to bring your own water, portable toilet facilities, power sources (such as solar panels or generators), and make provisions for waste disposal. The beauty of Perrault Lake lies in its natural state, and campers are expected to practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve its pristine environment.

In terms of accessibility for different types of camping setups, reviews suggest that Perrault Lake can accommodate various rigs, although larger Class A RVs might find it "tight and rough" to maneuver. There are reportedly "maybe 4 spots that are remotely flat enough for a rig," indicating that finding a level spot for larger vehicles could be challenging. However, for tent campers, there are "a few more spots that are great for tents," suggesting a more flexible range of options for those with smaller setups.

A notable feature of Perrault Lake is the presence of a "small beach/canoe launch." This provides opportunities for enjoying the lake, whether it's for swimming (at your own discretion and assessment of safety), launching a canoe or kayak for paddling, or simply enjoying the lakeside scenery. The mention of a canoe launch further enhances the appeal for those who enjoy water-based activities as part of their camping experience.

The reviews also indicate that Perrault Lake is a popular spot for local fishing. This suggests that the lake is likely to be teeming with fish, making it an attractive destination for anglers looking for a convenient 'camping near me' option that combines camping with fishing opportunities. The interactions with locals seem positive, with one reviewer noting that "everyone seems nice!" This adds a welcoming element to the overall experience.

It's important to note that one reviewer mentioned, "No rules posted, so I'm not sure if it's technically allowed but there are several folks posted up here, some look to be longer term." This suggests that while the area is used for camping, its official status and any regulations might be unclear. Campers should be mindful of this and exercise caution and respect for the environment. The presence of longer-term campers indicates that it is a known and utilized boondocking location within the local community.

Given that Perrault Lake is described as a "nice little lakeside free camping spot," it appears to operate on an informal basis without fees or formal reservations. This can be a significant advantage for budget-conscious campers seeking a natural and uncommercialized experience. However, it also means that availability of specific spots cannot be guaranteed, and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

In summary, Perrault Lake offers a unique boondocking experience for local users searching for 'camping near me'. Its beautiful lakeside and woodland environment, coupled with its remoteness yet relative proximity to Houghton, make it an appealing option for those who are self-sufficient and seek a natural and unserviced camping experience. The availability of a canoe launch and the popularity among local fishermen add to its charm. However, potential campers should be aware of the lack of formal amenities, the potentially challenging terrain for large RVs, and the informal nature of the camping area. If you are prepared for a primitive camping experience and value natural beauty and solitude, Perrault Lake could be a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

As there is no phone number or formal website provided, the best way to experience Perrault Lake is to visit the location in Toivola, MI 49965, USA, and assess if it meets your camping needs and preferences. Embrace the spirit of self-reliance and the beauty of the Upper Peninsula at this unique lakeside boondocking spot.
