For local users searching within the "camping near me" category, the campground located at 379 May Springs Rd, Rutledge, TN 37861, USA, offers a camping experience with notable features and some areas for consideration. Situated in the East Tennessee region, this campground provides options for both tent campers and RV enthusiasts, with a lakeside setting that many visitors appreciate.
According to customer reviews, one of the primary advantages of this campground for tent campers is the availability of "nice lake view tent sites." The scenic views of the lake can significantly enhance the camping experience, providing a tranquil and picturesque backdrop for your stay. Additionally, the campground is described as "quiet at night," which is a significant benefit for those seeking a peaceful and restful environment away from the noise often associated with more crowded camping areas. The presence of a "friendly staff" is also noted as a positive aspect, suggesting that visitors can expect helpful and welcoming interactions during their stay.
Another highlighted feature is the "nice little camp store" which includes "nice shower rooms/bathrooms." The availability of a well-maintained camp store can be convenient for purchasing necessities or snacks, and clean shower and bathroom facilities are essential for a comfortable camping experience. Furthermore, the campground enforces a "no alcohol allowed" policy, which, according to one reviewer, "keeps the loud partiers away," potentially contributing to the overall quiet and family-friendly atmosphere.
However, it is important to consider the drawbacks mentioned in the reviews. One tent camper found the experience to be "very expensive for tent camping," citing a cost of $88 for two nights after fees and taxes. This price point may be a significant factor for budget-conscious campers. The same reviewer also noted that "almost every tent site was hilly or sloped," making it challenging to find a flat and level area suitable for pitching a tent, especially larger family tents. The ground at all sites was also described as "very rocky," which could be uncomfortable for sleeping and potentially pose a hazard ("knee busters") when moving around inside the tent.
A particularly concerning point raised by one reviewer is a warning about "site 48," which reportedly has "poison on the trees." The reviewer states they are still recovering two weeks after exposure. This serious issue warrants significant caution for potential visitors and highlights a potential safety concern that needs to be addressed by the campground management. Additionally, the reviewer mentioned that the "bathhouse near the boat dock was filthy the whole weekend" and appeared to have not been cleaned during that time, describing unsanitary conditions.
In contrast to these negative experiences, another reviewer described the campground as a "beautiful Christian, safe and clean campground!" They praised the "security gate," "wonderful store," "super friendly staff," "clean pool," and the provision of "nice chairs and shelter," as well as the availability of "ice cream and pizza." This reviewer explicitly stated that they found the negative reviews to be inconsistent with their own positive experience and affirmed their intention to return. They also mentioned "full camper hookup with new stamped concrete pad and fire pit with new table" for RV sites, and described the lake as "Awesome❤️."
The significant disparity between these two reviews suggests a potentially inconsistent experience for visitors, or perhaps improvements have been made since the negative review was posted. The positive review emphasizes safety with a security gate, cleanliness (in contrast to the other review's experience with one bathhouse), and a range of amenities that cater to both RV and potentially tent campers (though the tent sites were not specifically mentioned as improved). The mention of a pool is a significant amenity not detailed in the negative review.
Given these mixed reviews, local users considering camping at 379 May Springs Rd should weigh the potential benefits, such as the lake views, quiet nights, friendly staff, and camp store, against the reported drawbacks, including potentially high tent camping costs, uneven and rocky tent sites, the serious concern regarding poison on trees at site 48, and the reported uncleanliness of at least one bathhouse. The positive review offers reassurance about the campground's beauty, safety, cleanliness (in some areas), and amenities like a pool and full RV hookups.
As there is no specific promotional information provided in the text, local users are encouraged to contact the campground directly at (865) 828-4802 or mobile phone +1 865-828-4802 to inquire about current rates, availability, the condition of tent sites, the status of the bathhouses, and to seek clarification on the safety concerns regarding site 48. It would also be prudent to inquire about any recent improvements or changes in management that might address the issues raised in the negative review. This direct communication will help potential campers make an informed decision based on their individual needs and priorities when searching for "camping near me" in the Rutledge, TN area.

I went tent camping here.Pros: nice lake view tent sites, quiet at night, friendly staff, nice little camp store with nice shower rooms/ bathrooms. No alcohol allowed, so keeps the loud partiers away.Cons: very expensive for tent camping, 2 nights cost $88 after fees and taxes. I was only willing to pay that because I had the weekend planned and I had to go farther away to escape weather. Almost every tent sight was hilly or sloped, so they really didn’t have much flat or level area great for a tent, especially if you have a large family tent. The ground at all of the sites was very rocky as well, knee busters when you’re in the tent.. beware site 48, it has poison on the trees, I am still recovering 2 weeks later. The bathhouse near the boat dock was filthy the whole weekend we were there and wasn’t cleaned in that time. Kind of looked like the toilet had over flowed and there were chunks of devolved toilet paper left all over the floor.
Apr 20, 2025 · Jason VaughnA beautiful Christian, safe and clean campground! Security gate, wonderful store, super friendly staff, clean pool, nice chairs and shelter, ice cream and pizza! This place is a definite comeback for us. So thankful we found it. After reading the negative reviews, I think they may have been on another planet. But our experience no negative reports. Full camper hookup with new stamped concrete pad and fire pit with new table. The lake? Awesome❤️
Jul 01, 2024 · Lorrie MullinsSite 11A, sleeping with a "Highway" light from Bathhouse shining on you. No level ground. Speed posted says 7mph. more like 47 mph. Boat dock ramp open ALL NIGHT NO SLEEP. Overgrown lawns need serious mowing. Dirty lake LOTS OF FLOATING DEBRIS/TRASH. At least not forget snakes, snakes and more snakes.Stay cut shirt by one day due to all of the above
May 20, 2024 · Mary SlegerWe stayed on site 57. Although we had a nice view of the lake, there was a lot of traffic going past our site. The problem here is that there are permanent sites and daily sites. Many of the permanent residents believe the rules don't apply to them. And there is no one there to enforce the rules. The lake boat traffic is constant. Early morning 3am and beyond. The bath house's are well maintained and clean.
May 14, 2023 · Dana CleaverOur campsite at May Springs was great! Such a clean, updated site. Very nice fire pit and picnic area. The store and pool area was super close. We will definitely stay again!
