Smokey Water Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Rutledge, Tennessee area? Smokey Water Campground, located at 435 Smokey Waters Wy, Rutledge, TN 37861, USA, presents itself as a relatively new campground with ongoing development. You can contact them at (606) 821-7181 or +1 606-821-7181 for inquiries. Based on recent customer feedback, it offers some appealing features along with certain considerations for potential visitors.
One reviewer described Smokey Water Campground as "Nice, new campground" with "Gravel pads with plenty of yard space" and "Beautiful views." These are attractive qualities for any camper, suggesting well-defined sites with ample room for outdoor enjoyment and scenic surroundings. The reviewer also noted that these sites are geared towards "long term" stays, indicating that the campground caters to those looking for an extended camping experience. Additionally, the owner is reportedly "building and renting cabins as well," providing an alternative to traditional RV or tent camping. Future amenities mentioned include a "swimming pool and laundry" facility that the owner "will begin adding soon," which would further enhance the campground's appeal and convenience. The campground is also "Pets allowed," making it a viable option for travelers with animals. Furthermore, "Storage rental space available for boats and such" suggests that the location might be near a body of water, catering to boating enthusiasts.
However, another reviewer provided a more critical perspective, particularly for those with larger RVs. They noted that the campground is "Not big rig friendly (45’ fifth wheel)," citing issues with tight turns ("turns less than 90 degrees, back on an angle") and the proximity of "power poles/signs close to the roads at the corners," which could make maneuvering large vehicles challenging. This is an important consideration for local users with larger RVs searching for "camping near me." This reviewer also found the "Sites very unlevel," reporting an initial "8 inch difference side to side," which they were able to reduce to a "5 inch difference" on a different site. Uneven sites can require extra effort for leveling RVs and ensuring comfortable setup. Another issue mentioned was the significant distance of the "sewer drain" from the RV drain (greater than 30ft). They also noted that "Dogs allowed to wander the grounds all hours of the day/night barking," which could be a concern for guests sensitive to noise or those who prefer pets to be leashed. Additionally, this reviewer pointed out that the "Sewer drain does not have the screw top on it, requires the rubber stopper type." Finally, they mentioned that "Owners not on site during winter months" and that the campground "does not accept credit cards."
Considering the "camping near me" category, Smokey Water Campground in Rutledge, TN, appears to be a developing facility with both positives and negatives for local users. Its newness, potential for long-term stays, cabin rentals, pet-friendly policy, and future planned amenities like a pool and laundry are definite draws. The beautiful views and spacious sites also contribute to its appeal.
However, for local users with large RVs, the reported difficulty in maneuvering and the unlevel sites are significant drawbacks. The issue of dogs wandering and barking might also deter some campers. The lack of on-site owners during winter and the cash-only policy are practical considerations to be aware of.
In terms of environment, the "beautiful views" mentioned by one reviewer suggest a scenic location in the Rutledge area. The availability of boat storage hints at proximity to water, which could enhance the outdoor experience for those interested in boating or water-related activities. The "plenty of yard space" at the sites suggests room to enjoy the outdoors around your camping setup.
Regarding services and features, currently, Smokey Water Campground offers gravel pads, long-term site rentals, pet allowance, and boat storage. The owner is also renting cabins and plans to add a swimming pool and laundry facilities in the future. However, it currently does not accept credit cards, and on-site management may be limited, particularly during winter.
For local users seeking a long-term "camping near me" option with potential for cabin rentals and who don't have large RVs or require credit card payment, Smokey Water Campground might be worth considering, especially given its newness and planned amenities. However, it's advisable to inquire about site leveling and policies regarding pets. If you have a large rig, you might want to explore other options. The beautiful views and spacious sites could be a significant draw for the right camper.
In conclusion, Smokey Water Campground in Rutledge, TN, presents a mixed picture for local users seeking "camping near me." It offers the appeal of a new campground with beautiful views, spacious long-term sites, cabin rentals, and a pet-friendly policy, with future plans for a pool and laundry. However, potential drawbacks include challenges for big rigs, unlevel sites, wandering and barking dogs, no on-site owners during winter, and a cash-only payment policy. If these limitations are not a concern for you, the campground's positives, especially its long-term focus and future amenities, could make it a viable option. Contact them at (606) 821-7181 or +1 606-821-7181 to discuss your specific needs and learn more about the current and planned facilities.

Sites very unlevel, we had an 8 inch difference side to side, was able to move to a 5 inch difference, then sewer drain was greater than 30ft from the drain on the RV. Dogs allowed to wander the grounds all hours of the day/night barking. Sewer drain does not have the screw top on it, requires the rubber stopper type. Owners not on site during winter months, does not accept credit cards.

Sep 04, 2024 · Mitzi CarrVisited today to check on a camper spot for a friend. They were cooking out and had a live band so the owner invited us to stay and enjoy the festivities. Super nice people that has created a very nice facility. If you're looking for a place to put a camper this is the place to go!! Thanks for the hospitality!!!
Apr 27, 2025 · Shannon CarrTerrible management, very angry and explosive temper owner with no filter even with kids around. Don’t waste your time. Beautiful place just not a friendly atmosphere.
