Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground Introduce
Are you a local resident searching for camping opportunities near you? Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground, located on the Wind River Reservation near Pavillion, Wyoming, presents a mixed picture based on recent visitor feedback. As a listing in the "camping near me" category, it’s important to consider both the potential benefits and reported drawbacks to make an informed decision about your next outdoor adventure. Situated at Wind River Reservation, Pavillion, WY 82523, USA, this campground offers lake access and some amenities, but recent reviews suggest a decline in quality and maintenance that should be taken into account.
One recent visitor, in September 2023, expressed significant concerns about the campground, stating that it had "really gone downhill in quality and maintenance." They described an atmosphere of "poverty and insecurity" and strongly recommended choosing alternative campgrounds or exploring the dispersed camping areas on the east side of Pilot Butte Reservoir. This negative review highlights potential issues with the upkeep and safety of the location, which local users should be aware of when considering this option. The recommendation to seek dispersed camping suggests that while the reservoir area itself might be appealing, this particular developed campground may not be meeting expectations.
In contrast, a review from a May visit paints a more positive picture. This visitor described the campground as a "very nice place to camp," noting the absence of fees and the presence of valuable amenities at each spot, including a covered picnic shelter with a table and a fire pit. They also mentioned that some sites even had cement pads for trailers, which could be a significant advantage for RV campers. This reviewer particularly enjoyed staying out on the point, experiencing solitude after dark and appreciating the beautiful views, the presence of loons, deer, and ducks, and the overall scenic beauty in the morning. This positive experience suggests that the campground has the potential to be a pleasant destination, especially during certain times of the year or at specific locations within the campground.
The environment of Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground is characterized by its proximity to the reservoir, offering the potential for lake views and access. The May review highlights the "beautiful views in every direction," suggesting a scenic setting. However, the same review also noted "not much shade," which could be a significant factor during hot summer months. The presence of cement pads at some sites indicates a degree of development aimed at accommodating trailers. The mention of staying "out on the point" implies that the campground might offer varied types of campsites with different characteristics and levels of privacy.
In terms of services and features, the May review indicates that camping at Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground is "free," which can be a significant draw for budget-conscious campers. The presence of a covered picnic shelter with a table and a fire pit at each spot provides essential amenities for outdoor living and cooking. The availability of cement pads at some sites caters specifically to RV and trailer users, offering a level and stable parking surface. The access to the reservoir allows for potential water-based activities, although the specific nature of this access (e.g., boat ramps, swimming areas) is not detailed in the provided reviews.
The contrasting reviews highlight a potential inconsistency in the quality and maintenance of Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground. While the May visitor found it to be a "very nice place" with appealing amenities and scenic views, the September visitor reported a significant decline and concerns about security. This discrepancy could be due to seasonal changes, fluctuations in management or maintenance efforts, or different experiences based on specific campsite locations within the campground. Local users should be aware of this variability when considering a visit.
For local users searching for "camping near me" options, Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground offers the potential for a free camping experience with covered picnic shelters and lake views. The presence of cement pads at some sites is a notable feature for RVers. However, the recent negative review regarding poor maintenance and a sense of insecurity is a serious concern that should not be overlooked. It might be prudent for potential visitors to seek more up-to-date information from other sources, such as recent online reviews or local camping forums, before making a decision.
Given the conflicting reports, it is difficult to provide a definitive promotional description. While the campground seemingly offers attractive features like free camping and lakeside access, the serious concerns raised about its current condition and safety cannot be ignored. Local users might want to consider a cautious approach, perhaps visiting the area to assess the current situation firsthand or opting for the suggested dispersed camping options on the east side of the reservoir, which might offer a more reliable and pleasant experience.
In conclusion, Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground presents a complex picture for local campers. While it has the potential for a nice, free camping experience with shelters and lake views, recent feedback indicates significant issues with maintenance and security. Potential visitors should weigh these factors carefully and consider seeking more current information before choosing this location. The option of dispersed camping around the east side of the reservoir might be a safer and more enjoyable alternative based on the provided reviews. As of September 2023, caution is advised regarding Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground itself. It is recommended to verify the current conditions and safety measures before planning a trip here. Your safety and enjoyment should be the top priority when choosing a "camping near me" destination.

Pilot Butte Reservoir Campground Reviews
This place has really gone downhill in quality and maintenance. When we visited it had the air of poverty and insecurity. There are much better places to camp than here. Until this place has better maintenance and security, choose a different campground or use any of the many dispersed camping areas around the east side of Pilot Butte Reservoir. We visited September 2023.
Jul 03, 2024 · Den UsaWe stayed there in May. Not much shade, but a very nice place to camp. No fees, but each spot has a covered picnic shelter with table and fire pit. Some spots even had cement pads for your trailer. We stayed out on the point and had the place to ourselves after dark. Just us, loons, deer and ducks. Beautiful views in ever direction in the morning. We're very glad we stumbled on this place!
May 18, 2020 · Denise SmithIn June, we stayed there. A good area to camp, but not much shade. Each location features a shaded picnic pavilion with a table and a fire pit, but there are no costs. Some locations even have concrete trailer sites. After dusk, we remained on the point and had the area to ourselves. Only us, the loons, the deer, and the ducks. In the morning, there are stunning sights in every aspect. We're very happy we found this location!
