Ocean Lake WHMA Northwest Campground Area Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" and interested in a more rustic and natural camping experience near Riverton, Wyoming? The Ocean Lake WHMA Northwest Campground Area, located on Missouri Valley Rd, Riverton, WY 82501, USA, offers a primitive camping option with access to Ocean Lake. Based on online reviews, this campground provides a basic, no-frills experience that may appeal to those seeking a more direct connection with nature, particularly for fishing.
One reviewer who visited in both 2019 and September 2023 noted that it remains a "good campground" despite its limitations. A significant point highlighted is the absence of drinking water. However, the lake does provide untreated water access at the boat ramp. Campers should be prepared to bring their own potable water or have a reliable method for treating the lake water if they intend to use it.
Another challenge mentioned is the location of the vault toilet, which can be "a little difficult to find especially after dark." The reviewer provides helpful directions, noting it is situated approximately 200 feet north of the boat ramp on the west side of the road within a clump of trees. This lack of clear signage or easy accessibility to the restroom facility is something potential visitors should be aware of.
The campground is described as small, with limited space for camping. The first reviewer estimated about four places suitable for tent setup and only two places where a small or medium RV could park. This suggests that the campground has a low capacity and may not be suitable for large groups or those with larger RVs. The second reviewer also refers to it as a "small campground and Picknick / stop area," reinforcing its limited size.
A notable environmental factor to consider is the presence of a "massive amount of mosquitos," especially during the spring and summer months due to the area by the lake being predominantly marsh or wetland. Campers visiting during these times should come prepared with effective mosquito repellent and appropriate protective clothing.
An important restriction is that "no campfires are allowed." This likely due to fire risk in the area or regulations set by the Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA). Campers who enjoy campfires for cooking or ambiance will need to plan accordingly and bring alternative cooking methods if needed.
Both reviewers characterize the campground as "relatively primitive." The areas for pitching tents or parking RVs are described as "rough and small," contributing to the overall basic nature of the site. This lack of developed infrastructure is a key characteristic that distinguishes this campground from more amenity-rich options.
Despite its limitations, the second reviewer notes that it is a "very peaceful spot with a small entrance to the lake." This tranquility and direct lake access could be a significant draw for those seeking a quiet retreat and opportunities for fishing. The reviewer mentions that the lake is "more for fishing then for swimming" and that while bathing might be possible, the water appears "milky." This suggests that recreational swimming may not be the primary attraction of Ocean Lake.
The second reviewer also points out that camping is allowed for a maximum of 14 consecutive days and that it is free of charge. This "free camping" aspect is a significant benefit for budget-conscious travelers. However, it also means that amenities are minimal, and maintenance may rely on the responsibility of visitors.
A concern raised by the second reviewer is the issue of litter, noting that "some people left trash." They urge visitors to "please bring your trash bags and clean the place before you leave" to help maintain the natural beauty of the area. This highlights the importance of practicing Leave No Trace principles when camping in primitive sites.
On a more positive note, the second reviewer describes the "nature around the Lake" as "stunning" with "many different plants and flowers," offering "very beautiful and lots of variety." This suggests that while the campground itself is basic, the surrounding natural environment provides significant aesthetic appeal for nature lovers and those interested in local flora.
Given the information available, Ocean Lake WHMA Northwest Campground Area offers a free, primitive camping experience focused on lake access and the natural environment. However, potential campers must be prepared for the lack of drinking water, a potentially difficult-to-find vault toilet, limited and rough camping spots, and a significant mosquito presence, especially during warmer months. The prohibition of campfires is another important factor to consider.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize a free and peaceful location with lake access for fishing and are comfortable with rudimentary facilities, Ocean Lake WHMA Northwest Campground Area might be an option. However, it is crucial to be self-sufficient and prepared for the primitive conditions. Bringing ample mosquito repellent, potable water, trash bags, and a reliable navigation tool to locate the toilet, especially at night, is highly recommended.
Promotional information is absent, which is typical for free, primitive campgrounds managed by wildlife habitat management areas. The primary draw is the natural setting and the lack of camping fees. The 14-day maximum stay limit mentioned by one reviewer is an important piece of information for those planning longer trips.
In conclusion, Ocean Lake WHMA Northwest Campground Area provides a free, primitive camping experience near Riverton, WY, characterized by its access to Ocean Lake (primarily for fishing), peaceful environment, and stunning natural surroundings. However, campers must be fully self-sufficient due to the lack of drinking water and limited facilities, and should be prepared for potential issues with mosquitoes and the challenge of locating the vault toilet. The prohibition of campfires is also a key consideration. This campground is best suited for experienced campers who appreciate a basic, no-cost option and are willing to embrace a more rugged outdoor experience.

Ocean Lake WHMA Northwest Campground Area Reviews
We visited here originally in 2019 and came back to see how this campground compared to then. We have good news it still a good campground. There is no drinking water. However, the lake provides untreated water at the boat ramp. The vault toilet is a little difficult to find especially after dark. It is located about 200 feet north of the boat ramp on the west side of the road in a clump of trees. About four places one could set up a tent and two places for an small or medium RV could park. Massive amount of mosquitos are common as the area by the lake is all marsh/wetland in the spring and summer months. No campfires allowed. This campground is relatively primitive. Where you can pitch a tent or park an RV are rough and small. Hence, this is only an "average" 3 stars. Our most recent visit was September 2023.
Jul 02, 2024 · Den UsaThis is a small campground and Picknick / stop area. The sign there says that camping is allowed for 14 days maximum in a row. It’s for free. There is a small outhouse but no benches around. Some people left trash. Please bring your trash bags and clean the place before you leave. Otherwise it’s a very peaceful spot with a small entrance to the lake. The lake is more for fishing then for swimming. You might be able to have a bath, but the water looks milky. There are many mosquitoes out there. Be careful. Nature around the Lake is stunning and you can find many different plants and flowers. Very beautiful and lots of variety.
Aug 06, 2023 · SariA barebones area with access to the lake. The water is very turbid and has a lot of algae. There is some muck at the launch, so pit kayaks in to the side a little where there was sand. The good news, it is free and there was only 1 other boat we saw on lake and one couple came in to birdwatch, otherwise we had it all to ourselves. The lake itself is very open, not a ton of structure, but there are a lot of reeds along the edge. Fairly shallow for the areas we explored, think the south side is deeper and likely has the better fishing
