The environment at Point Group Camp is defined by the towering redwoods that create a deeply shaded and tranquil atmosphere. Portola Redwoods State Park encompasses 2,800 acres, dropping from a ridgetop into a hushed redwood forest, offering a significant escape from urban bustle. The Point site specifically is designed to provide "a little privacy for individual parties within your group," allowing for a balance of communal gathering and personal space. This thoughtful layout enhances the group camping experience. Nature is at the forefront here; the park features 18 miles of well-maintained hiking trails that meander alongside creeks, where moisture-loving coast redwoods flourish among ferns and huckleberries. Waterfalls tumble down mossy banks, adding to the picturesque scenery. One of the most appealing aspects of the trails, as noted by visitors, is the "lack of other people," offering a sense of solitude and the chance to find "secluded groves where no one bothered us for a full hour." This allows for a truly magnificent and undisturbed connection with nature. The campsites are nestled within this lush environment, providing a true wilderness feel, yet with essential amenities within reach. It’s important to note that the road leading to the park can be steep, narrow, and winding, requiring careful driving. The park and surrounding area generally have limited to no cell service, reinforcing the feeling of a secluded retreat.
In terms of services and features, Point Group Camp provides key amenities tailored for group use while maintaining a rustic camping feel. The camp shares essential facilities with the adjacent Circle site, including shared restrooms and a dishwashing station. The restrooms are described as clean, a crucial detail for any outdoor accommodation. While group sites are generally tent-only and do not offer RV hookups, the main campground of Portola Redwoods State Park does have flush toilets, paid showers, and drinking water, which may be accessible to group campers. The presence of an amphitheater nearby suggests opportunities for evening programs or gatherings, enhancing the communal aspect of group camping. For those who enjoy a campfire, fire rings are typically available at sites, and firewood can often be purchased within the park, ensuring a classic camping experience. For adventurers, the park's extensive trail system is a major draw. While there is no water available on the trails themselves, the park ensures that "outhouses neatly spaced," making restroom access convenient during hikes. Dogs are allowed in the campground and picnic areas, as well as on paved roads and the Upper and Lower Escape Roads, but are generally not permitted on hiking trails, with the exception of service animals. This policy helps preserve the natural environment and wildlife.
From a promotional perspective, Point Group Camp at Portola Redwoods State Park is an ideal destination for groups seeking a serene and private "Camping Near Me" experience in a redwood forest. Its key selling points are its unique group site layout that balances privacy and communal space, the stunning natural environment of old-growth and second-growth redwoods, and the extensive network of uncrowded hiking trails. The opportunity to find secluded spots for reflection or group meals in the heart of the forest is a significant draw. The park's commitment to maintaining clean facilities and trails further enhances its appeal. Promotional information would emphasize the quiet and tranquil atmosphere, making it perfect for family reunions, scout groups, educational trips, or any gathering looking for an authentic outdoor adventure. While amenities are basic, they are clean and functional, supporting a true camping experience. Visitors should be prepared to bring sufficient water for trails and be aware of the limited cell service, embracing the opportunity to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature. The park also provides information on the presence of wildlife and the importance of being "crumb clean" to protect the endangered marbled murrelet. The convenience of being a short trail walk from the convergence of two streams offers a picturesque and accessible natural highlight. Reservations for group sites are highly recommended, especially during peak seasons, and can be made through the California State Parks reservation system. This destination offers an unforgettable group camping experience where the beauty of the redwoods and the tranquility of nature take center stage.

Point Group Camp, Portola Redwoods State Park Reviews
The Point site is good for providing a little privacy for individual parties within your group. The Circle site, as the name implies, is good for circling everyone around a common area for cooking and socializing. Both are near the amphitheatre, and share restrooms and a dishwashing station. Follow a short trail at the end of the Point site to find a lovely spot at the convergence of two streams.
Apr 14, 2019 · Mark NicewongerWe went for some hikes in this area and I can’t say enough how beautiful they were. The trails are well-maintained and the local office as well staffed. There’s no water on the trails so definitely bring a lot of water before hand. But there are outhouses neatly space so it’s easy to use the restroom if you need to.One of the best things about the trails the lack of other people. Me and my friend went ahead and ate a wonderful lunch in a secluded grove where no one bothered us for a full hour. It was magnificent
