Prairie Pines Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Rantoul, Illinois area? Prairie Pines Campground, located at 711 Chandler Rd, Rantoul, IL 61866, USA, offers a range of features and services that cater to various camping needs. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground presents a mixed experience, offering both advantages and some considerations for local campers.
The environment at Prairie Pines Campground is characterized by "big spaces" and "lots of mature trees," which suggests a shaded and potentially scenic setting. The presence of mature trees can provide welcome relief from the sun during warmer months and contribute to a more natural and aesthetically pleasing camping experience. The grounds are also described as "mowed & tidy," indicating that the management takes care in maintaining the overall appearance of the campground. While the general atmosphere is reported as "fairly quiet," one reviewer noted the presence of streetlights, with one being directly in front of their site, causing it to remain lit throughout the night. This is a factor that light-sensitive campers might want to consider when booking a site.
In terms of services, Prairie Pines Campground appears to offer "full hookup" at all its sites. This is a significant advantage for RV campers, as it typically includes connections for electricity, water, and sewer. However, one reviewer pointed out that even if only an electric hookup is needed for a weekend stay, the nightly rate of $40 still applies. The campground also provides shower and laundry facilities on-site. While one reviewer did not personally use these facilities, another described them as "up-to-date and clean," with four shower rooms and one washer and dryer available. This indicates that campers have access to essential amenities for maintaining hygiene and convenience during their stay.
Prairie Pines Campground offers several features that might appeal to local users searching for "camping near me." For families, there is a "small playground for kids," providing a space for children to play and stay active. Additionally, there is a ping-pong table located in a room, offering another recreational option. The availability of these amenities makes Prairie Pines a potential choice for families looking for activities to keep children entertained.
One of the notable aspects highlighted in the reviews is the friendliness and helpfulness of the hosts. They were commended for allowing a late checkout due to a soccer game and for holding onto a lost item until the camper could return to retrieve it. This level of customer service can significantly enhance the overall camping experience, creating a welcoming and accommodating atmosphere.
However, there are some considerations that local campers should be aware of. One unique aspect of Prairie Pines Campground is that they "pick your site for you." This is different from many campgrounds where campers can select their preferred spot. While some sites are reportedly "spaced nicely," one reviewer experienced being placed very close to other campers. This lack of control over site selection might be a drawback for those who value more space and privacy. Additionally, the presence of bright streetlights could be an issue for those who prefer a darker camping environment for better sleep or stargazing.
The layout of Prairie Pines Campground led one reviewer to speculate that it might have previously been used as housing for the nearby decommissioned Air Force base. While this is just speculation, it could potentially influence the arrangement and spacing of the campsites.
Considering the pricing, the nightly rate of $40 for a full hookup site, even if all hookups are not needed, might be a point of consideration for budget-conscious campers looking for "camping near me" for short weekend stays where only basic amenities are required. It's important to factor this cost into the overall decision-making process.

In summary, Prairie Pines Campground in Rantoul, Illinois, offers full hookup campsites, mature trees providing shade, and generally clean facilities, including updated showers and laundry. It features a small playground and a ping-pong table for recreation. The hosts are reported to be friendly and accommodating. However, potential drawbacks include the campground's policy of assigning campsites, which may result in less privacy, and the presence of bright streetlights. The $40 nightly rate for full hookup sites, regardless of usage, is another factor to consider. For local users searching for "camping near me," Prairie Pines Campground appears to be a suitable option for travel stops and potentially for weekend stays, especially for those who require full hookups and appreciate the provided amenities and friendly service. It is recommended to contact the campground directly for site availability and any current promotions.

Prairie Pines Campground Reviews
First off, we are weekenders. We don't travel and live in our travel trailer so that plays heavily into this review. This is the first campground in 10+ years of camping in multiple states that picks your site for you. Some sites are spaced nicely, but we had other folks placed pretty much on top of us. There are also street lights that light up everything; we had one immediately in front of us that kept our site, and our trailer, lit up all night. The layout of the place makes me wonder if it was once used as housing for the nearby - now decommissioned - Air Force base.On the plus side, I believe all sites are full hookup. The downside to that is when an electric-only site is all you really need for a weekend, you're still paying $40/night. We had no problems with water pressure, and the sewer connection was... well... a sewer connection. There are also shower and laundry facilities on site, but I can't comment on those as we had no use for either. Most sites appear level, and the grounds are mowed & tidy with a lot of mature trees. The hosts were friendly and allowed us to leave our trailer parked well into the afternoon on our check-out day due to a late soccer game. They even held onto my brand new Leatherman I foolishly left behind in our site until we were able to return to pick it up.We chose to stay here for a weekend soccer tournament rather than find a hotel, and could see doing the same in the future. It's fine as a travel stop, but not someplace I would necessarily choose for a getaway weekend.
Oct 29, 2024 · Justin BrueggemannNice campground, big spaces lots of trees and fairly quiet. There is a small playground for kids and a ping-pong table in a room, which is kind of nice $40 for one night. They charge even if you don’t use them. There is one washer and dryer and four shower rooms. They are all up-to-date and clean.
Jun 03, 2024 · BENPrairie Pines Campground Rantoul Illinois:This is s very low key and quiet campground. This is NOT a resort and that's just fine for us. The sites are gravel with a concrete parking area in front of them for your vehicle. We had a full hook up site and our water, electric and sewer all remained constant. The WiFi is much less then stellar and we just gave up on it and used our Hot Spot. The one odd thing of note here is that to get to your pull through site you will follow the friendly fellow from the office with your rig up over a curb and on the grass possibly traveling behind other campers. Having said that the sites are nice, level, wide and everything was clean and well maintained.Other features include a large bathhouse, pavilion and paved roadways. They seem to be very dog friendly as well. All in all when passing through again we will be happy to stay again.
Aug 22, 2022 · Bud JacksonQuiet campground for an overnight stop or longer stay. Facilities are very clean and sites are well kept. Full hook up sites, gravel but mostly level.
Jun 26, 2022 · Brian Van HornGreat campground! Nice big sites, way away from noise, very peaceful. Very reasonable rates, actually 1/2 the price of the KOA we stayed at last night, which was not a pleasant stay.
